Abstract

Shaped articles comprising moulded shapes, sheets, films, threads, strands, tubes, profiles and hollow bodies are obtained by processing polymers selected from (a) polyvinyl fluoride with k values according to Fikentscher above 50 and softening points under light pressure according to Ueberreiter above 200 DEG C., and (b) polyvinylidene fluoride with k values according to Fikentscher above 40 and moduli of torsion above 100 kg./cm.-2 at 160 DEG C. The polymers are prepared using boron compounds of the general formula BRa1Rb2Rc3Xd, where R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are alkyl or alkoxy radicals having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, X is a hydrogen or a halogen atom and "a," "b," "c" and "d" are each 0, 1, 2 or 3 provided that (i) when X is a halogen atom "d" is not 3 and (ii) the sum of "a" + "b" + "c" + "d" equals 3. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of water, with or without surface-active substances, or in organic solvents which may be removed after polymer formation. Oxygen or oxygen compounds may be used to activate the boron catalyst. The moulded articles are prepared by the known methods.
