Abstract

1,003,951. Moulding a sole and heel unit on to a shoe. THE BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Dec. 18, 1961 [Dec. 20, 1960; Feb. 10, 1961], Nos. 43749/60 and 4961/61. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] A method of moulding a unit comprising a sole and high heel on to a shoe 12 comprises locating against the bottom of the shoe 12 a heel core member 22, locating the shoe bottom against a cavity 14 of a mould assembly possessing a locating means which co-operates with the heel core member 22. Plastic material is injected into the cavity 14 to form the unit, the plastic covering extending continuously around the heel core member 22 and being integral with the sole. The heel core member 22 comprises a core portion 24 which may be of polystyrene with a metal reinforcement 26 projecting from portion 24. Member 22 may have secured to it a metal shank stiffener 34 located on member 22 by lugs 28 and a groove 30 (Fig. 4, not shown). The mould comprises side portions 4 (not shown), 6 and a base portion 8 which is secured to a base-plate 10. The injection aperture 16 extends through base-plate 10 and member 8 to a shallow fan-shaped recess 18 formed in member 6, the recess being positioned at the edgo of cavity 14 beneath the shank portion of the shoe. The shoe 12 comprising an insole 36 and lasted upper is provided with a cement layer about its lasted margin and also a scrim layer 74 impregnated with the cement, the scrim layer 74 extending over the lasted margin but lying within the boundary of the shoe bottom. The heel core assembly is also coated with the cement which is allowed to dry. The heel assembly is then cemented to the heel seat of shoe 12 and located against the mould cavity by the locating means which includes a member 42 engaging in a bore 32 of reinforcement 26 and a bore 20 of mould base 8 in which it is resiliently mounted. The sole material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, is injected into the mould cavity 14, activating the cement which also may contain polyvinyl chloride, the flow of material being cut off by a switchactuated gate member 50. Specification 949,361 is referred to.
