Abstract
1,003,779. Expanding-wheel gear. STONE-WALLWORK Ltd. April 24, 1964 [April 26, 1963], No. 16572/63. Heading F2D. In a countershaft expanding pulley belt gear wherein coaxial driving and driven expanding pulleys 7, 8 are connected by belts 13, 14 to expanding pulleys 15, 16 keyed to a hollow countershaft 18, ratio shift is effected by axial movement of the countershaft 18 which is freely rotatable and axially slidable on a shaft 21, and acts through stops 26 to cause axial movement of the movable flanges 15a, 16a of the pulleys 15, 16 relative to the fixed flanges 15b, 16b. Hubs 15c, 16c of the fixed flanges 15b, 16b have opposite hand threads which engage a nut 27 held against axial movement by a bearing 28 the outer race of which is fast with the casing. Belt tension may be adjusted by turning the nut 27 relative to the flanges 15b, 16b. Axial movement of the countershaft 18 is effected by turning a handwheel 36 fast with an externally threaded element 25 which cooperates with a threaded bush 37 in the casing and is connected for axial movement with the countershaft 18 by a bearing 22. The movable flanges 7b, 8b of the driving and driven pulleys 7, 8 are interconnected for axial movement by a bearing 12. Lubrication may be effected through the ducts shown on the shafts carrying the axially movable flanges may be coated with nylon or molybdenum disulphide. Specification 1,001,803 is referred to.
