Abstract

1,002,317. Vehicle tyres. R. HOPWOOD. Oct. 2, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 37651/62. Heading B7C. The tread of a tyre comprises a plurality of individual tread units 11 each formed with major and minor parts 12, 13, respectively which are separated by a slot 14 extending from the radially outer surface of the tread, the major part 12 of each unit having a hollow 15 formed therein and containing a passage 16 which connects the hollow 15 to the slot 14 while the minor part 13 is sufficiently resilient to close the passage 16 when the respective tread unit is under load, whereby the hollow acts as a suction cap for improving the roadholding capacity of the tyre on a smooth or wet road. The tread units 11 are arranged in circumferential rows, the units of one row being disposed circumferentially in opposite directions to those in a second row while the units in a third row are disposed transversely in opposite directions to those in a fourth row.
