Abstract

1,002,191. Discharge apparatus. HITACHI SEISAKUSHO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Dec. 14, 1962 [Dec. 16, 1961], No. 47297/62. Heading H1X. [Also in Division H5] A plasma jet generator for use as a spectroscopic light source comprises a water-cooled anode 1 formed with an ejection nozzle 2 for the plasma jet, a rod-shaped cathode 3 concentric with the nozzle 2 and formed with a tip 4, a gas inlet 6 through which a stream 7 of an inert gas is provided to shield the electrodes 1, 2, and a side tube 10 for introducing samples into the plasma. The sample is first atomized by an inert gas, e.g. argon, and is then injected through the tube 10, the opening 11 of which is directed towards the high temperature region of the arc formed between the points 4 and 5 of the cathode and anode. The sample is swept through the nozzle 2, before it can reach the arc feet 4 and 5, by the gas stream 7 and is thus uncontaminated by the electrodes. The gas flow through the opening 11 tends to prevent wandering of the arc foot 5 and thus serves to stabilize the arc.
