An hydraulic system comprises an actuator 1, a source of pressure fluid 2, a reservoir 3, a multi-position valve 4, and a manually releasable one-way valve 13 disposed in a valve passage, so that in one position 5 of the valve, the actuator is moved in one direction, in another position, 8, the actuator is moved in the other direction, in a third position, 7, the actuator is hydraulically locked, and the source 2, e.g. a pump, is connected to the reservoir, and in a fourth position, 6, the actuator is free to be moved by its load in either direction when the one-way valve 13 is manually released.
