Abstract

Photo-conductive material is produced by introducing a halogen into a zinc and/or cadmium sulphide, selenide or telluride containing copper, silver or gold as activator, and then diffusing indium or gallium into the product by heating in an oxygen-free atmosphere. In one example, a mixture of cadmium sulphide, copper sulphate and ammonium bromide in distilled water is dried and fired in nitrogen at 800 DEG C. for one hour. The product is moistened with a solution of gallium sulphate and refired in oxygen-free nitrogen at 850 DEG C. for one hour. The product particles may be coated with cadmium oxide by heating to decompose an insoluble cadmium salt which has been precipitated upon them by, for example, placing the particles in a solution of cadmium acetate to which ammonium carbonate is added.
