Abstract

Plied, bulked yarn having limited or zero stretch properties is made from two continuous filaments of heat-settable material one (a) of which has been highly bulked e.g. by stuffer or knife edge crimper, false-twister or air jet, permanently heat-set in the bulked state and then temporarily set in straight form and the other (b) permanently set in less highly bulked or straight form. Filament (a) is passed under minimum tension through a relaxing zone in which the filament or spaced portions thereof is/are heated to remove the temporary straight form and thus restore the bulked condition in which it is combined with filament (b) and the two filaments are intertwisted to form the yarn wherein the stretch property is determined by filament (b) and the bulk is due to filament (a). A coating of bonding material e.g. wax or a thermoplastic pressure sensitive adhesive, may be applied to one filament prior to the plying operation and removed or retained thereafter. In apparatus described, the filament a is overfed into and withdrawn from the relaxing zone by two pairs of feed rolls. The forwarding effect of the entry pair is interrupted, at intervals predetermined by a programmer, by a solenoid-operated lever which swings one roller from nipping engagement with the other, Fig. 1 (not shown). A modification comprises a variable speed device which, in a timed sequence determined by the programmer, changes the relative speeds of the pairs of rolls to control the position and amount of filament bulking which occurs in a heating tube in the zone, Fig. 4 (not shown).
