Abstract

1,000,265. Photo-electric control of radiation emitters. H.BAUMANNS. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 9, 1961; Dec. 4,1961], No. 38153/62. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H4]. The direction of a beam of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a radiation transmitter e.g. a vehicle headlamp, can be continuously varied in continuous dependance on the intensity and/or position of an external source of the same type of radiation, e.g. the headlamps of an approaching vehicle, as determined by a radiation sensitive receiver operatively coupled to the radiation transmitter. The invention is particularly described as applied to the automatic control of a car's headlamps in dependance on the position of the headlamps of an oncoming car. A car 10 Fig. 1 is provided with two headlamps 11 and 12 arranged to be pivoted about vertical axes under the control of electric motors 22, Fig. 3, such that the beams emitted thereby, normally directed dead ahead, are moving inwards as in Fig. 1. Each motor is under the control of a photo-cell 19 and its amplifier 21a, such that when the beamed radiation from an oncoming car 10a is detected thereby, the beams are pivoted inwards such that the oncoming car is within the zone of darkness 13a Fig. 2 in between the two crossed beams. The amount of crossing of the two beams is increased as the oncoming car 10a gets nearer, the beam 14 illuminating the side of the road, until the amount of beamed light reaching the photo-cells decreases as the oncoming car passes, whereupon the two beams swing back into their normal dead ahead position. An auxiliary lamp, manually operable if so desired, may be provided on the car 10 to illuminate the road in the zone of darkness in front of the oncoming car, the said lamp being automatically controlled to dip as the two cars approach. The presence of scattered, i.e. none beamed, light in the light from the oncoming car 10a can upset the operation of the arrangement as so far described. To overcome this the main photo-cell 18, Fig. 5, may be placed at the focus of a parabolic reflector 19, with a compensating photo-cell 18a placed outside the said focus and electrically connected in opposition with the photo-cell 18. The receptive faces of the two photo-cells are placed to the side so as to receive only light reflected by the parabola. The arrangement is such that beamed rays 24 fall on the main photo-cell 18 only, while scattered rays 25 fall on both photo-cells producing equal but opposite currents therein which cancel out. The invention can also be used between an aircraft and signal towers to direct radar beams for short distance communication, or as a landing aid in fog. Ultra violet or infra-red light may also be used.
