Abstract
1,000,257. Taphole closures with tapping and venting means. W. H. HEATH Ltd. July 12, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 13164/61. Headings B8T and B8X. [Also in Division F2] The body 4 of a taphole valve is screwed into the wall 1 of a beer barrel, and a resiliently deformable valve 16 is located within a cavity 6 of the body and includes a shoulder part 17 and an axial bore 19. The valve walls have radial slits 18 which normally are closed to prevent: flow through the bore 19, but when a filling union 20 is forced into the bore the valve walls are urged apart to allow liquid flow to the barrel via a tube 7 extending from the body cavity 6. The valve is held by a screwed coverplate 21 with a bore 22 to receive a tubular part 25 of the union, and lugs 32 on the tube engage recesses 33 in the bore to provide a bayonet connection. The union includes a handle 31 and a junction piece 26 by means of which liquid is delivered to the tube 25. Ducts 34, 35 in the union are provided for the supply of pressure gas to the barrel when it is required to withdraw liquid therefrom, and these ducts lead to the barrel interior via passages 38, 39 and a valve 10. The latter is normally urged upwardly by a spring 13 to close the passage 39, and is forced downwardly by the lower end of the pipe 25 which acts on a plate 15 abutting pins 14 upstanding from the valve.
