Abstract

1,000,212. Gas turbine engines. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Oct. 25, 1963 [Jan. 9, 1963; April 4, 1963], Nos. 42238/63 and 42239/63. Divided out of 961,522. Heading F1G. [Also in Division F2] A gas turbine engine 130, Fig. 6, has a casing 131 within which are arranged in flow series a compressor 132, combustion equipment 133 and a turbine 134. The compressor 132 has a rotor 135 which is driven from the turbine 134 through a shaft 136, Fig. 7, an extension 140 of the latter being secured to the rotor 135. A nosecone 141 is supported in the casing 131 by angularly-spaced apart struts 142 and the nosecone 141 carries a fixed outer race 143 of a roller bearing 144. The rotatable inner race 145 is integral with the sleeve 140 and has an inner circumferential surface 150 having a number of axially extending, radially outwardly inclined, triangular-shaped recesses 151. Each recess 151, Fig. 9, has its shallowest and deepest parts at the apex 152 and the base 153 respectively. Holes 154 in the inner race 145 communicate with the bases 153 respectively and lead to lubricant traps 155, 156 formed by flanges 160 on a cage 161. The alternate recesses 151 extend to opposite sides of the bearing 144. Lubricant is supplied from a pipe 163 in the shaft 136 and is passed through a filter 164, chamber 165 and holes 166 to an annular chamber 167. The latter communicates with axially-extending pipes 170 having apertures 171 therein through which lubricant passes to the surface 150 of the inner race 145. In operation, the lubricant on the surface 150 will be centrifuged through the recesses 151 to the traps 155, 156 and will then pass between the cage 161 and the inner race 145 and to the rollers 146. The lubricant leaves the rollers 146 by flowing between the cage 161 and the outer race 143 so as to pass to chambers 172, 173 from which it is scavenged (by means not shown).
