Abstract

Copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, the ratio by weight of vinylidene chloride to vinyl chloride being between 1 and 4 and the acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile content being from 1 to 50 g. per kg. may be used for coating regenerated cellulose and synthetic resin films. The copolymers may be dissolved in solvents and solvent mixtures, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and mixtures of ethyl acetate and toluene, ethyl and butyl acetates and toluene, isopropyl acetate and toluene, isopropyl and butyl acetates and toluene, and methyl ethyl ketone and toluene. The compositions may also contain small quantities of wax, antistatic agents, lubricants and antiblocking agents. The copolymers may be prepared in the presence of small proportions of keying agents, e.g. maleic anhydride. Examples describe coating compositions comprising copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile dissolved in solvent mixtures comprising toluene and (2, 9 and 11) ethyl acetate, (6) isopropyl acetate, (7) ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, and (8) methyl ethyl ketone.ALSO:Sheet materials may be coated with copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile in which the ratio by weight of vinylidene chloride to vinyl chloride is between 1 and 4 and the acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile content is 1-50 g. per kg. The copolymers may be prepared in the presence of small proportions of keying agents, e.g. maleic anhydride. Specified sheet materials are films of regenerated cellulose, polyolefins and polyamides, paper and aluminium foil. The coatings may be applied from solutions of the copolymers in solvents, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and mixture of toluene with ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, ethyl and butyl acetates, isopropyl and butyl acetates, and methyl ethyl ketone. The surfaces of the sheet materials may be pretreated to improve adhesion, e.g. polyolefins may be chlorinated, flame treated or subjected to a corona discharge. Examples describe the coating with copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile of (2 and 6-8) regenerated cellulose film, (4) aluminium foil, (9) polyamide film, and (11) polyethylene.
