Abstract

1,000,017. Heat exchangers. MODINE MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 9, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 42381/62. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger core, which comprises a plurality of rows of tubes 14 each of elongated cross-section and a plurality of essentially flat spaced apart heat transfer fins 13, the core has an entrance side 16 and an exit 18 for the passage of cooling fluid, e.g. air, the tubes in the row initially contacted by said fluid are inclined at between 50-20 degrees to the direction 17 of the fluid at the entrance side 16, said tubes in the initially contacted row are inclined opposite to the tubes in the adjacent row and the spaced apart distance of the tubes in each row is between 0À250-0À675 inch measured between axes in a direction perpendicular to the direction 17 of the fluid. As shown, all the tubes are inclined and the rows are staggered. The tubes may be made of brass and have a major axis of 0À520 inch and a minor axis of 0À098 inch and the distance between the rows of tubes may be 0À527 inch. The heat exchange fins may be made of copper sheet 0À005 inch thick and 4À4 inch wide. In a modification, the fins have round shallow dimples 19 (Fig. 4, not shown).
