Abstract

A beacon 70 suitable for use on a marine vessel 20 is operable in response to a detection of an emergency event, to send an alert message containing data including the vessel identity, the type of emergency and the vessel position, course and speed. The communications channel may be a satellite link 30 to a land station 40. The land station is able to respond to the beacon and sent control messages so that the beacon can change the repletion rate of it's alert messages or be stop sending messages. Both the beacon and the land station can send acknowledgment messages, and test messages can be passed from the beacon to the land station and back to the beacon. The beacon may also be detached from the vessel and is able to float and to self-right. The emergency may include a man over board.
