Abstract

A safety device to lift a rear part of a hood or bonnet 45 of a motor vehicle includes a pivotal connection 41 for connecting the rear part of the hood or bonnet 45 to a main part 46 of the vehicle to permit the front part of the hood or bonnet to open, part of the pivotal connection 41 is formed on a hinge arm (34, Fig 4) incorporated in a hinge extending between a mount 21 on a hinge or bonnet and a mount 43 on the main part of the vehicle. A catch (29, Fig 6) retains the hinge arm in a first condition relative to one mount and a lifting element 1 lifts the rear part of the hood or bonnet wherein the catch is released by a mechanism in response to actuation of the lifting element 1 so that the hinge arm can move relative to the mount to permit raising of the rear part of the hood or bonnet. Preferably the lifting element 1 is a rupturable, plastic canister (2, Fig 2) containing an inflatable sleeve (10, Fig 2) and carrying a barbed prong (13, Fig 2) the head of which is received in a recess 48 on the bonnet upon deployment of the device. Advantageously the safety device allows for extensive deformation of the hood or bonnet 45 when under impact from a pedestrian thus preventing substantial injury to a head or torso.
