Abstract

A remote control system comprises an interface located in or on the device to be controlled and a remote control unit. In use the interface is programmed to accept commands from the remote controller using a specified programming language, preferably XML. The interface includes means to map the remote command to a set of operation commands for the controlled device. The interface may also include a state determination unit to determine the state of the device and provide operational commands to the device on the basis of the received commands and the determined state. The interface may also provide for a specification of a keyboard layout of an individual remote control independent of the device using the specified programming language.
