Description
The present invention generally relates to the synchronization of positioning of a spatial location pointer within different images of the same deformable object.
To be able to identify a particular structure in a deformable object, such as a tumor in a breast, it is known to carry out image acquisitions using different methods, for example by X-ray imaging and by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). , then analyze the images of the object thus acquired.
However, it is complicated and potentially a source of error for the practitioner to determine which point of an image acquired, for example by MRI, corresponds to a given point of another image acquired, for example by X-ray imaging. .
We know from the state of the art a multimodal position correlation method which is supposed to make it possible to find the point of a second image acquired of a breast which corresponds to a given point of a first image acquired of this breast. However, this known position correlation method is based on a global breast deformation model that is used to simulate breast deformation to determine the position of the point in the second image.
But different breasts can exhibit large differences in deformation behavior, particularly depending on the internal composition of the breast, so using a breast deformation model to find the position of a point in the breast for different acquired images of this breast, may not be sufficiently reliable or precise.
The aim of the present invention is to propose a new system and method making it possible to overcome all or part of the problems set out above.
- acquisition d’une première image de l’objet selon une première configuration d’acquisition d’image ;
- acquisition d’une deuxième image de l’objet selon une deuxième configuration d’acquisition d’image, distincte de la première configuration, et pour laquelle l’objet est dans un état déformé, par exemple par compression, par rapport à l’état dans lequel est l’objet pour la première configuration d’acquisition d’image ;
- pour chacune des première et deuxième images, détection d’au moins une structure externe de l’objet dans l’image, telle qu’une cage thoracique, un mamelon, de la peau, un creux auxiliaire ;
- détection et classification d’au moins une structure interne de l’objet, telle qu’une masse et/ou un amas de calcifications, pour chacune des première et deuxième images ;
- identification d’au moins un couple de structures, chaque couple de structures comprenant une structure interne dans la première image qui correspond à une structure interne dans la deuxième image ;
- définition d’un système de coordonnées attaché à ladite structure interne pour chaque image ;
- à l’aide d’une interface graphique utilisateur, affichage de la première image et de la deuxième image ;
To this end, the subject of the invention is a method implemented using a computer system for the synchronized positioning of a location pointer in different images acquired of the same deformable object, such as a breast. , comprising the following steps:
- acquisition of a first image of the object according to a first image acquisition configuration;
- acquisition of a second image of the object according to a second image acquisition configuration, distinct from the first configuration, and for which the object is in a deformed state, for example by compression, relative to the state in which the object is for the first image acquisition configuration;
- for each of the first and second images, detection of at least one external structure of the object in the image, such as a rib cage, a nipple, skin, an auxiliary hollow;
- detection and classification of at least one internal structure of the object, such as a mass and/or a cluster of calcifications, for each of the first and second images;
- identification of at least one pair of structures, each pair of structures comprising an internal structure in the first image which corresponds to an internal structure in the second image;
- definition of a coordinate system attached to said internal structure for each image;
- for several points of the first image, definition of a correspondence function to match one of said points of the first image with a point of the second image,
the correspondence function being established as a function at least of the coordinates of said point of the first image in the coordinate system attached to the internal structure of the first image, and as a function at least of the coordinate system attached to the internal structure of the second picture ; said correspondence function being established also as a function of the distance of said point of the second image relative to said at least one external structure of the second image,
- using a graphical user interface, display of the first image and the second image;
- for a pointer of a pointing device, such as a mouse, positioned by an operator using the graphical user interface, on a point of the first image, determination using said correspondence function of the corresponding point of the second image and displaying a pointer on said corresponding point of the second image.
The method thus makes it possible, thanks to taking into account at least one internal structure of the object and at least one external structure of the object, to benefit from precise and reliable spatial location of a point of the object. object for multiple acquisition modalities which make it possible to visualize the content of a deformable object, such as a breast, while avoiding a simulation of compression of the object which would use a model of deformation of the breast.
The method thus makes it possible to precisely and reliably synchronize the positions of the pointers between the different images acquired in real time.
Conversely, in the state of the art, the transition from a position in one image to a corresponding position in another image uses a model of deformation of the object (a breast) which is a source of inaccuracy .
The process may also include one or more of the following characteristics taken in any technically admissible combination.
- la distance du point par rapport à la structure interne de chaque couple ;
- le type de la structure interne de chaque couple, tel que masse ou amas de calcifications ;
According to one embodiment of the invention, several pairs of internal structures being identified, for a point of the first image positioned outside one or more internal structures, the method comprises, to establish said correspondence function, the selection of one of the pairs of internal structures as a function of at least part of the following parameters:
- the distance of the point from the internal structure of each pair;
- the type of internal structure of each couple, such as mass or cluster of calcifications;
- the size of the internal structure of each couple.

Reference throughout the specification to “an embodiment” means that a particular functionality, structure, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, the appearance of the phrase "in one embodiment" in various locations throughout the specification does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment. Furthermore, the particular functionalities, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments.
With reference to the figures, a method and a computer system are proposed for the synchronized positioning of pointers (also called cursors) for locating within several acquired images of a deformable object, such as a breast. The images are computer images.
Spatial tracking within several images of the same physical object makes it possible, on a graphical user interface, to synchronize the location of a tracking pointer, movable by a pointing device, such as a mouse, with the location of another registration pointer to a corresponding point in another image. The rest of the description is carried out in the case of two images of the object acquired using different methods, but can be applied to a larger number of images acquired using different methods.
In the example illustrated, the deformable object studied is a breast. We can also predict that the object studied is a prostate. Thus, the description which is carried out below for a breast also applies to another deformable element of a human or animal being.
Preferably, the method is applicable to elastic and deformable objects, which can react to natural and artificial external forces applied, such as gravity or a compressive force. The object can be characterized by its physical properties, such as its dimensions, its elasticity, its density, its mass.
The deformable object can be studied with different imaging techniques, also called imaging modalities. The acquisitions generated by these methods can be carried out under different conditions or settings. The same acquisition method can be used according to different settings or at different times resulting in different acquisition conditions.
The conditions may include different temporal moments, different spatial positions, different object states (e.g. linked to temperature variations between acquisitions), etc. An object being characterized by its own physical properties can have a different behavior depending on the conditions of acquisition. In addition, each type of imaging modalities, that is to say each technique or method of image acquisition, is based on different physical principles leading to different behaviors of the object.
Thus, for an object studied, the set of imaging devices generates a series of acquisitions which can present the object under different aspects. It is thus possible to visualize structures of the same type differently, for example breast tissue.
The method described makes it possible to establish a link (correspondence) between the acquired images to allow navigation in the images, in a synchronized manner, so that when a pointer is located on a point of a first image, a corresponding pointer is displayed on a point (obtained precisely and reliably as explained below) of the other or each other image which corresponds to the selected point of said first image (i.e. the point on which the pointer of the pointing device movable by the operator).
ImagesPictures
An acquired image can be a 2D or 3D image. In the case of a 3D image, the image displayed on the screen is a projection of the image in a given plane. The image is acquired with an imaging device which makes it possible to acquire and visualize an image of an object studied subjected to waves or radiation emitted, and possibly to a force (such as a compressive force) which deforms the object. The device allows you to visualize the external and internal aspects (structures) of the object studied.
An image is defined computationally as a set of points in space. Said set is characterized by dimensions W x H x D, where W is the width, H is the height, and D is the depth of the image.
Les valeurs numériques peuvent appartenir par exemple, à un sous-ensemble de l’espace des chiffres naturels N ou réels R.Each point in the image is assigned a value V which can be scalar (i.e. a single numerical value), vector or matrix (group of numerical values). The numerical values can belong, for example, to a subset of the space of natural numbers N or real numbers R.
An image can be associated with a set of acquisition parameters, such as parameters of forces exerted or radiation emitted on the object, or the physical properties of the object studied measured at the time of acquisition.
Methods for acquiring an image may include all or part of all of the following methods.
The X-ray imaging device comprises a breast compression system which comprises a compression plate 211 and a support plate 221 between which a breast S1 is compressed with a force F2, an X-ray emission system 210 for emit X-rays through the breast and a reception system 220 receives the X-rays which have passed through the breast. The acquisition can be carried out at variable angles of incidence relative to the axis of the object studied.
Depending on the spatial position, the object of study may be subject to external forces, such as gravity, resulting in deformation such as stretching or compression.
Preferably, for each image acquisition configuration carried out, the acquisition parameters used to carry out said acquisition (eg, compression force, radiation intensity, contrast product used, etc.) are stored in a memory of a computer system.
Said computer system also includes a memory 103 making it possible to store image data, a pointing device 105, such as a mouse, which can be manipulated by an operator and a display screen 104. According to one embodiment, the memories 101 and 103 may be common in whole or in part or distinct.
The computer system 1 also includes a graphical user interface making it possible, as detailed below, to display simultaneously and distinctly a first and a second acquired images of the same deformable object, and making it possible to display on the first image a pointer in function of the position of the pointing device manipulated by the operator, while displaying on the second acquired image, another pointer at a point of said second image which corresponds to the point of the first image on which the pointer of the pointing device is positioned pointing manipulated by the operator.
The memory for computer storage of the acquired images also preferably allows the corresponding acquisition parameters to be stored.
Thus, for an object studied such as a breast, the imaging device(s) make it possible to generate a series of acquisitions presenting the object under different aspects, and thus making it possible to visualize the same structures differently, such as, for example, example, tissues, vessels, masses, etc.
The memory used for saving the acquired images allows the writing of the set of acquired images, regardless of the number of dimensions of the image, such as 2D, 3D, or 4D, as well as the saving of the set acquisition parameters associated with the image acquisitions carried out.
Reading an image from memory allows you to read the image with its acquisition parameters.
Other image acquisition methods can also be used, such as image acquisition by computed tomography or positron emission tomography (PET).
Intérêt des acquisitions selon différentes méthodesInterest in acquisitions using different methods
Acquiring images of the breast using different methods makes it possible to obtain different images and thus different renderings of the breast, which makes it possible to highlight particular aspects (structures) of the breast studied.
For example, X-ray imaging can illustrate the response of breast tissues to X-ray emission, reflecting the density of the tissues. Ultrasound imaging illustrates the response to ultrasound emitted by a probe, thus reflecting the state of the tissues, such as liquid, soft, solid.
Structures in a breast that may be useful to detect and classify may include some or all of the following structures:
- the skin,
- the nipple,
- the pectoral muscle,
- the inframammary fold,
- the masses, and/or
- micro-calcifications and macro-calcifications.
- une ou des structures anatomiques (ex., mamelon) ;
- une ou des structures pathologiques (ex., masses).More generally, the structures to be classified include:
- one or more anatomical structures (e.g., nipple);
- one or more physiological structures (e.g., vessels); and or
- one or more pathological structures (e.g., masses).
The method of synchronized positioning of registration pointers on different images is described below for two images, but of course applies to a larger number of images.
A first image IM_irm of the object S1 is acquired according to a first image acquisition configuration. The first configuration includes a given acquisition method, for example by MRI, with a given setting.
A second image IM_rx of the object S1 is acquired according to a second image acquisition configuration, distinct from the first configuration.
According to one embodiment, the second configuration comprises another acquisition method, for example by X-ray. Alternatively, the second acquisition configuration may comprise the same first acquisition method but with a setting or conditions of acquisition (temporal moment, spatial position, temperature) different.
The images are saved in computer memory.
Segmentation et classificationSegmentation and classification
According to one embodiment, one or more processing operations are applied to each acquired image to make it possible to segment (detect) and classify different structures of the object identifiable on the images.
- structure anatomique, par exemple le mamelon ;
- structure physiologique, par exemple un vaisseau ;
- structure pathologique, par exemple une masse.In the case of an object of study such as a breast, the structures can be of the following type:
- anatomical structure, for example the nipple;
- physiological structure, for example a vessel;
- pathological structure, for example a mass.
- isoler les points relatifs à une structure identifiable ;
Segmentation and classification processing are applied to each image in order to be able to:
- isolate the points relating to an identifiable structure;
- associate a category (type) with each of the identified structures.
The computer processing applied makes it possible to segment (delimit) the object studied on the image, which makes it possible to detect one or more external structures to determine the limits (contour) of the object. Taking into account one or more external structures of the object makes it possible to apply a constraint for determining the position of the pointer and verify that a pointer positioned inside an object for an image acquired following a given configuration is not positioned outside the object for another image acquired according to another configuration. An external structure, for example the skin of a breast, forms at least part of the outline of the object.
Computer processing also makes it possible to segment regions within the object studied to make it possible to classify (assign a category, that is to say identify) the regions.
A variable number of treatments can be applied to an image to assign to each point of the image one or more characteristics relating to the type of structure associated with said point.
The processing applied to the image may include filtering applications, such as, for example, noise reduction or contrast enhancement.
Each treatment can be applied to all or part of the image. Acquisition parameters can also be used to define the processing to be applied.
Depending on the objectives, for example depending on the type of structures to be identified, different series of treatments can be implemented.
- application d’une fonction mathématique f(.) sur les valeurs d’intensité de l’ensemble de points de l’image permettant la mise en évidence des structures prolongées et fines, par exemple par rehaussement d’intensités de points associés auxdites structures prolongées et fines ;
- application d’une autre fonction mathématique g(.) sur les valeurs d’intensité de l’ensemble de points de l’image permettant le masquage des structures lisses et volumineuses, par exemple par l’abaissement d’intensités de points associés auxdites structures lisses et volumineuse ;
For vessel structure detection and as illustrated in
- application of a mathematical function f(.) to the intensity values of the set of points in the image allowing the highlighting of extended and fine structures, for example by enhancing the intensities of points associated with said structures prolonged and thin;
- application of another mathematical function g(.) on the intensity values of the set of points in the image allowing the masking of smooth and bulky structures, for example by lowering the intensities of points associated with said smooth and bulky structures;
- application of a thresholding function h(.) on the intensity values allowing the isolation of extended and fine structures, to highlight vessel-type structures.

The different images acquired of the breast allow visualization of the object studied from different aspects. However, there are a certain number of properties shared between the images generated by the different image acquisition configurations of the object.
Indeed, regarding the same object whose image was acquired according to different configurations, at least part of the structures of the object can be visualized on the different images.
Analyzes of pairs of structures present in two different acquisition images are carried out in order to match the identified structures.
According to one embodiment, an association is made between the different types of images acquired.
We can thus define a first association between a first image of the breast acquired by X-ray imaging and a second image of said breast acquired by MRI imaging.
A second association can be made between a first image of the breast acquired by X-ray imaging and a second image of the breast acquired by ultrasound imaging.
A third association can be made between a first image of the breast acquired by MRI imaging and a second image of the breast acquired by ultrasound imaging.
For each image association, each image is analyzed to select structures present on both images that can be matched. In the case of an object of study such as a breast, we can provide a correspondence of all or part of the following structures:
- the skin,
- the nipple,
- the pectoral muscle,
- the inframammary fold,
- the masses,
- micro- and macro-calcifications.
Sorting can be based on the properties of the images (e.g. visual aspects), as well as on the acquisition parameters, in particular the spatial characteristics of the breast (linked to the positioning of the person).
Identified structures, such as the rib cage, the nipple, a mass, or a cluster of calcifications can thus be matched in different images.
Thus, following the step of matching identifiable structures between acquisitions, unique pairs of structures are identified. These pairs are used to define the coordinate systems on the corresponding acquired images.
In the case of an object of study such as a breast, the coupled structures may include coupled internal structures and coupled external structures.
- le mamelon ;
- la peau ;
- la cage thoracique / muscle pectoral ;
- le creux auxiliaire.As recalled above, external structures which may include in particular:
- the nipple ;
- the skin ;
- the rib cage / pectoral muscle;
- the auxiliary hollow.
Les structures internes peuvent inclure notamment :
- une masse ;
- un amas de micro-calcifications.Internal structures may include:
- a mass;
- a mass of micro-calcifications.
Système de coordonnées attaché à une structure externeCoordinate system attached to an external structure
According to one embodiment, among the coupled external structures, a pair of external structures can be retained to serve as the origin of a coordinate system (global reference frame) in the corresponding images.
Other coupled external structures can be used to define the orthogonal orientation axes Crx, Mrx, Erx; Mirm, Eirm of the corresponding mark. For an object such as a breast, the axes can be defined between the origin and the nipple, and between the origin and the auxiliary hollow.
One or more external structures can be retained to serve as boundaries of the object. For an object such as a breast, the boundaries of the object can be defined by the skin surrounding the breast.
- l’origine Prx et l’origine Pirm ;
- le grand axe Mrx et le grand axe Mirm ;
- la limite correspondant au contour du sein dans chacune des images ;
The arrows which connect the two images indicate the correspondences between:
- the Prx origin and the Pirm origin;
- the major axis Mrx and the major axis Mirm;
- the limit corresponding to the contour of the breast in each of the images;
- the small axis Erx and the small axis Eirm.
In the case of three-dimensional imaging, such as MRI, the coordinate system for said imaging is defined in three dimensions.
The method includes, for each image acquired, a step of detecting an internal structure.
By internal structure we mean an element contained in the envelope (or outline) of the object. The internal structure is therefore distinct from the envelope of the object which forms an external structure of the object. In the case of a breast, the envelope of the object comprises the external part formed by the skin of the breast which is capable of being in contact with an external element used to apply a deformation to said breast. We can also consider that part of the external structure of the breast is formed by part of the rib cage which delimits part of the breast envelope.
The detection of an internal structure can be carried out by processing or a series of image processing operations as explained above.
After detecting the internal structures, a classification step is performed to define the internal structure. The definition of the internal structure can be done by assigning a class to each internal structure detected.
- masse ;
- micro-calcification ;
-macro-calcification ;
- ganglion ;
- ensemble de fibres avec désorganisation architecturale (structurelle).For a breast, the classes attributable to an internal structure may include all or part of the following classes:
- mass ;
- micro-calcification;
-macro-calcification;
- lymph node;
- set of fibers with architectural (structural) disorganization.
The classification of the structures visualized can be carried out by taking into account acquisition parameters. The classification step can be carried out by applying a series of image processing operations to each acquired image.
As for external structures, the identification of a pair of internal structures can be carried out by correlation by identifying an internal structure in one image which corresponds to an internal structure in another image.
In the case where in an image there are several candidates for the structure likely to form the pair of internal structures, a sorting and rejection operation of the candidates can be carried out according to acceptability or probability criteria.
Thus each pair of internal structures identified includes an internal structure StInt1irm in the first image IM_irm, which corresponds to an internal structure StIntrx of the second image IM_rx.
- le type (classe) de la structure ;
- la taille ;
Advantageously, corresponding internal structures can present all or part of the following data in common:
- the type (class) of the structure;
- the size ;
- the position in relation to the breast envelope.
Système de coordonnées attaché à une structure interneCoordinate system attached to an internal structure
A coordinate system is attached to said internal structure for each image. The coordinate system includes an origin and orientation axes.
The origin of the reference mark associated with the internal structure StInt1irm can be the barycenter or geometric center of the internal structure.
The Xmirm and Zmirm axes are axes of the coordinate system which can be established according to the axes of a global spatial reference (i.e., associated with the person) known and stored during image acquisition (or established in function of the characteristic axes for example, longitudinal, transverse axis of the internal structure, or established according to the axes of the reference associated with an external structure, here Pirm, Cirm, Mirm).
The mark can also be defined according to the type of internal structure. Thus for an internal structure of the vessel type, we can provide that the reference frame includes a main axis defined by the longitudinal axis of the vessel.
The axes longitudinal, transverse of the internal structure, or established according to the axes of the reference associated with the external structure, here Prx, Crx, Mrx).

Fonction de correspondanceMatching feature
Pour chaque association d’image acquise (i, j), une fonction de correspondance Tij est définie permettant de mettre en correspondance chaque point d’une image acquise i, appelée acquisition source i, avec un point d’une image acquise j, appelée acquisition destination j.For each acquired image association (i, j), a correspondence function Tij is defined making it possible to match each point of an acquired image i, called source acquisition i, with a point of an acquired image j, called acquisition destination j.
- des structures ayant servi pour la définition des systèmes de coordonnées ;
- d’autres structures ayant été analysées ;
Said matching function Tij can be based on:
- structures used for the definition of coordinate systems;
- other structures having been analyzed;
- the acquisition parameters as well as the physical properties of the imaging modalities.
The matching function Tij is defined based on at least one pair of internal structures identified in the source and destination images.

The internal structure(s) identified on the source acquisition and the destination acquisition are taken into account during the spatial correlation, to allow more precise and reliable positioning of a pointer in a second acquired image of the breast in correspondence with the position of the pointer of the pointing device manipulated by the operator in a first image acquired of the breast, as explained below.
- PM = 10cm ; PC = 5cm ; en IRM- PM = 10cm; PC = 5cm; in MRI
- PM = 8cm ; PC = 6cm ; en mammographie- PM = 8cm; PC = 6cm; in mammography
The IM_irm image acquired by MRI is a destination acquisition, and the IM_rx image acquired by mammography is a source acquisition.
Le centre O_Mrx est défini à O_Mrx_x = 18mm selon l’axe PM et à O_Mrx_y = 28mm selon l’axe PC.An internal M_rx structure is identified in the IM_rx image. A coordinate system is attached to this internal structure M_rx, the reference frame comprising an internal structure center O_Mrx and the associated coordinate system X_Mrx and Y_Mrx. The center O_Mrx is defined at O_Mrx_x = 18mm along the PM axis and at O_Mrx_y = 28mm along the PC axis.
An internal structure M_irm is identified in the image IM_irm, such that the internal structure M_rx corresponds to the internal structure M_irm. A mark is attached to this internal structure M_irm, the mark comprising the center of said internal structure O_Mirm and the associated coordinate system X_Mirm, Y_Mirm, are defined so that the center O_Mirm is defined at O_Mirm_x = 10mm along the PM axis and at O_Mirm_y = 25mm along the PC axis.
Le point de repère Rrx a les coordonnées R_S1_rx_x = 25mm selon l’axe PM et à R_S1_rx_y = 30mm selon l’axe PC (repère du sein S1).A reference point Rrx (pointer positioning point) is placed by the operator, for example using a mouse, in the image IM_rx. The landmark Rrx has the coordinates R_S1_rx_x = 25mm along the PM axis and R_S1_rx_y = 30mm along the PC axis (breast landmark S1).
Said reference point Rrx is also identified in the coordinate system of the internal structure M_rx by the coordinates R_Mrx_x = 10mm along the axis XMrx and R_Mrx_y = 5mm along the axis YMrx.
A correlation function S is defined to allow the positioning of a point of the IM_rx image towards a corresponding point of the IM_irm image. The correlation function S takes into account the internal structures M_rx, M_irm and the marks attached to these internal structures. The correlation function S also takes into account the distance between the Rirm point and an external structure such as the skin and, possibly, the distance between Rirm and the external structure, for example to check that the calculated Rirm point is indeed at the inside the breast and not outside.
The point Rirm which corresponds in the image IM_irm to the point Rrx in the image IM_rx is obtained by applying the correlation function S to the point R_rx.
In the coordinate system associated with the internal structure M_irm, the coordinates obtained from Rirm are R_Mirm_x = 10mm along the XMirm axis, and R_M_irm_y = 5mm along the YMirm axis.
The system also makes it possible to obtain the coordinates of Rirm in the coordinate system associated with the breast in the image IM_irm which, in the example, are the coordinates R_S1_irm_x= 20mm according to the PM axis, and R_S1_irm_y= 30mm according to the PC axis.
A titre d’exemple, le point obtenu Rirm’ aurait les coordonnées R_S1_irm’_x = 30mm selon l’axe PM, et R’_S1_irm’_y = 30mm selon l’axe PC (repère du sein S1).In the case, which is not part of the invention, where the determination of the position of the point Rirm in the image IM_irm which corresponds to the point Rrx in the image IM_rx would be carried out not with the correlation function S taking into account takes into account the internal structures, but by applying a breast deformation model, within S1 of the image IM_rx to arrive within the image IM_irm, we see that the determination of the coordinates of the point then obtained Rirm' would be erroneous compared to to the coordinates of the point Rirm obtained with the correlation function S taking into account the internal structures. For example, the point obtained Rirm' would have the coordinates R_S1_irm'_x = 30mm along the PM axis, and R'_S1_irm'_y = 30mm along the PC axis (breast marker S1).
When the source acquisition is carried out with a resolution lower than that of the destination acquisition, taking into account one or more internal structures makes it possible to increase the level of precision for the positioning of the location pointer on the image acquired destination.
When several internal structures are found superimposed on the source acquisition, the position of the pointer on the superposition of structure is analyzed to determine the structure which has the most probability of being targeted by the pointer, that is to say the structure that the operator is likely to point to (or select) by positioning his pointer on the structure superposition.
The determination of the targeted structure is carried out according to the size, the type of structure and possibly according to the position of the pointer relative to the structure.
Conversely, when the pointer is positioned on the cluster of calcifications behind which the mass extends, it is more likely that the operator wishes to point at the mass.
Thus in a destination image presenting the breast from another view where the cluster of calcifications and the mass are not superimposed, the pointer is positioned on the cluster of calcifications rather than on the mass.
The distinction of structures in relation to the pointer thus allows appropriate positioning of the pointer on the destination acquisition.
Cas du pointeur à l’intérieur de l’image de l’objet et hors des structures internesCase of the pointer inside the object image and outside the internal structures
When the pointer is located in the image of the object outside the internal structures, the distance between the pointer and each internal structure is taken into account, then the type of internal structure to select the internal reference structure with which is associated a landmark.
As recalled above, the movable pointer in the source image is for example a cursor of a pointing device, such as a mouse, a touchpad, or a stylus.
The method and the corresponding system thus make it possible, for each point of the breast on an acquired image, to reliably and precisely find the correspondence of this point for each of the other acquired images of this breast. We can thus establish the link between acquisitions to allow reliable and precise inter-acquisition spatial navigation.
The steps of analyzing or processing the images and synchronizing the location pointers on the images are carried out by a processing unit.
The processing unit is for example in the form of a processor and a data memory in which computer instructions executable by said processor are stored, or even in the form of a microcontroller.
In other words, the functions and steps described can be implemented as a computer program or via hardware components (e.g. programmable gate arrays). In particular, the functions and steps carried out by the processing unit can be carried out by instruction sets or computer modules implemented in a processor or controller or be carried out by dedicated electronic components or FPGA or ASIC type components. It is also possible to combine computer parts and electronic parts.
The processing unit is thus an electronic and/or computer unit. When it is specified that said unit is configured to carry out a given operation, this means that the unit comprises computer instructions and the corresponding execution means which make it possible to carry out said operation and/or that the unit comprises electronic components correspondents.
- un filtrage qui est un traitement appliqué à une image destiné à modifier les valeurs attribuées à chaque point de l’image de manière réversible ou irréversible dans l’objectif d’améliorer l’interprétabilité de l’image pour les traitements ultérieurs. Les filtrages peuvent comprendre, par exemple, l’atténuation du bruit ou le rehaussement de contraste ;
- une segmentation qui est un traitement appliqué à une image destiné à définir un ou plusieurs groupes de points (ex. régions, ou segments) répondant à des caractéristiques similaires ;
- une classification qui est un traitement appliqué à une image destiné à attribuer les classes (ex. valeurs numériques ou logiques), à une image entière ou à une portion d’image ;
- une corrélation qui est un traitement appliqué à des points de plusieurs images pour établir des relations spatiales entre les points des différentes images ;
According to one embodiment and as detailed above, the processing unit makes it possible to carry out all or part of the different treatments defined below:
- filtering which is a processing applied to an image intended to modify the values assigned to each point of the image in a reversible or irreversible manner with the aim of improving the interpretability of the image for subsequent processing. Filtering may include, for example, noise attenuation or contrast enhancement;
- segmentation which is a processing applied to an image intended to define one or more groups of points (e.g. regions, or segments) responding to similar characteristics;
- a classification which is a processing applied to an image intended to assign classes (e.g. digital or logical values), to an entire image or to a portion of an image;
- a correlation which is a processing applied to points of several images to establish spatial relationships between the points of the different images;
- a spatial location which is a processing intended to visualize the correlation results on all the acquisitions.
Spatial marking allows, when an operator selects or points to an area (or point) on an acquired image, to determine the corresponding area(s) (or points) in the other acquired image(s) and to display a pointer, such than a corresponding cursor, on said corresponding zone(s) (or points).
