Description
The present invention relates to a method for determining the interval distance of a plurality of bivalves. It also relates to a device allowing the implementation of the process.
La classe s’appelle aussi Bivalva, Pelecypoda (les pélécypodes) ou Lamellibranchia (les lamellibranches).Bivalves (class Bivalvia) are molluscs whose shell is made up of two different, attached parts, more or less symmetrical, which can open or close. This class includes approximately 30,000 species, in particular mussels, oysters, clams and even scallops. Bivalves are all exclusively aquatic, and are found in both fresh and salt water. The class is also called Bivalva, Pelecypoda (pelecypods) or Lamellibranchia (lamellibranchia).
Some species, such as mussels, attach to underwater surfaces with a sticky filament called byssus. Others become buried in sand or sediment. Others are always mobile, such as clams which can move in sand or mud thanks to their muscular feet.
Valvometry is the measurement of inter-valvar spacing in bivalves. This measurement can be associated with different “states” in bivalves such as “open/closed” or “filtration or not”. It also makes it possible to determine behaviors linked to the more or less rapid movements of its valves such as swimming, jumping and burying in Pectinidae (Thomas and Gruffydd 1971; Wilkens 1981) or even the expulsion of feces (Nagai and al. 2006). From valvometry, the literature mainly uses the amplitude, duration of valve openings and frequency of movements which are associated with different environmental variables such as temperature and luminosity in Crassostrea virginica galloprovincialis (Maire et al. 2007), this list being far from exhaustive.
There are multiple methods used to measure valve opening (imaging, accelerometry, HFNI (Non-Invasive High Frequency), or even Hall effect sensors). The most used in recent literature are Hall effect sensors (for example cited in the publications of Luc Comeau, fisheries and oceans Canada) and HFNI sensors used in particular by Jean-Charles Massabuau and his team, University of Bordeaux).
Limited by the cable connecting the recorder to the sensor, these devices are used in particular conditions (shallow or in the laboratory) and on sessile bivalves.
The present invention proposes a method for determining the interval distance of a plurality of bivalves, the method being reliable and allowing standardization of the measurements carried out on the different bivalves, with the obtaining of independent replicates, the data acquired for the different bivalves being statistically comparable.
The invention proposes in particular a method for determining the interval distance of a plurality of bivalves.
The process includes:
- a step of fixing, on each bivalve, a magnet and a Hall effect sensor capable of generating a voltage as a function of a magnetic field detected by the sensor, the magnet being fixed on a first valve of the bivalve and the Hall effect sensor being fixed on a second valve of the bivalve, the fixing of the magnet and of the Hall effect sensor being carried out using a fixing system common to the plurality of bivalves and provided with a housing of the magnet and a housing of the Hall effect sensor, so as to fix the magnet on a predetermined zone of the first valve of each bivalve and the sensor on a predetermined zone of the second valve of each bivalve, and
- a step of determining the interval distance of each bivalve, as a function of the voltage generated by the Hall effect sensor.
The method according to the invention thus makes it possible to carry out behavioral monitoring of bivalves (in particular Pectinidae ) via the use of valvometers. The bivalves are monitored with the same measurement conditions (standardization of measurements carried out on the different bivalves) and can be deployed in such a way that they can be considered as independent replicates.
The sensors and magnets are positioned uniformly on all bivalves via the specific fixing system (wedge).
The raw signal from the valvometer is transformed into a real valve opening (in mm for example).
The process is non-invasive, it does not hinder the bivalves, either in their movements or in their integrity.
Finally, the miniaturization of autonomous sensors, associated with the process, governing their fixation, their calibration and their deployment, makes it possible to overcome most of the constraints by providing a precise valvometric measurement, without autocorrelation bias and easily reproducible. This tool, which makes it possible to monitor the behavior of bivalves anywhere between 0 and 80 m depth, is in line with the needs linked to the detection and measurement of impacts linked to industrial activities.
The method may further comprise a calibration step translating the relationship between the generated voltage and the interval distance, the step of determining the interval distance of each bivalve being implemented using said calibration. Thus, a calibration of the sensors is advantageously carried out after their deployment in order to obtain the actual valve opening values. Measurements are thus carried out at different known apertures. A theoretical model translating the relationship between the recorded signal (voltage) and the distance is then used to determine, from these measurement points, the equation translating all voltage values into interval distances.
Ce positionnement est à définir en fonction de l’espèce étudiée (ouverture valvaire maximale, vitesse des mouvements réalisés).The sensor can be attached to a first valve of the individual, one or more magnets can be attached to the second valve. The interval distance is determined from the intensity of the magnetic field (magnet) measured by the sensor. The relative position of the sensor to the magnet is an important factor because it defines the measuring range and accuracy (sensitivity) of the sensor. This positioning must be defined according to the species studied (maximum valve opening, speed of movements performed).
In order to be able to compare the data acquired on different bivalves, it is necessary to standardize the fixing of the valvometers. To do this, we use a wedge fixing system. This system makes it possible in particular to place the sensors and magnets aligned, parallel, and with an invariable initial distance (d0, valves closed) corresponding to a reference state of the valvometer system on the individual being monitored. In order to adapt to the different intrinsic shapes of the individuals being monitored, wedges with different angles have been developed, allowing correct fixation for all individuals. As an example of scallop monitoring, the sensors and magnets can be fixed aligned, parallel and with an initial distance of 13 mm when the shell is closed.
The fixing system can thus comprise two parts articulated around a hinge, including a first flat part and a second part comprising, in the closed position of the fixing system, a portion inclined relative to the first part, the inclination between the first part and the inclined portion of the second part defining a reception zone of the bivalve, the first part comprising the housing of the Hall effect sensor and the second part comprising the housing of the magnet.
The step of fixing, on each bivalve, the magnet and the Hall effect sensor, may include the insertion of the bivalve in the reception zone of the fixing system, the insertion of the Hall effect sensor in the housing of the Hall effect sensor, inserting the magnet into the magnet housing, as well as fixing the magnet on the first valve of the bivalve and fixing the Hall effect sensor on the second valve of the bivalve.
Fixing the magnet on the first valve of the bivalve and fixing the Hall effect sensor on the second valve of the bivalve can be carried out using a thermosetting liquid polymer, for example an epoxy resin.
Each bivalve can be deployed in isolation, within non-magnetic supports, for example in a cage or an individual tank, so as to avoid interactions between valvometers. We thus obtain independent replicates. This individualization also makes it possible to avoid training phenomena which are the reaction of an animal to the movements of individuals close to it. For in situ studies, individuals can be deployed in individual fishing trap-type cages.
Each bivalve can be placed in a non-magnetic support.
The fixing system can be adapted to all species of bivalves.
The method according to the invention makes it possible to monitor the behavior of bivalves, for example with the aim of detecting disturbances in water quality. We can thus measure the amplitude and frequency of opening of the bivalve, in order to check whether this corresponds to its biological rhythm in a healthy environment. Depending on the disturbances, the valves move in an unusual way or close, revealing a change in water quality.
The invention also relates to a device for determining the interval distance of a plurality of bivalves, for implementing the method described above.
The device according to the invention comprises:
- a magnet, a Hall effect sensor capable of generating a voltage as a function of a magnetic field detected by the sensor,
- a system for fixing the magnet and the Hall effect sensor to the bivalve, provided with a housing for the magnet and a housing for the Hall effect sensor, and
- a system capable of determining the interval distance of each bivalve, as a function of the voltage generated by the Hall effect sensor.
Other advantages and particularities of the present invention will result from the description which follows, given by way of non-limiting example and made with reference to the appended figures:
A Hall effect sensor uses the Hall principle which is stated as such: “an electric current passing through a material immersed in a magnetic field generates a voltage perpendicular to the latter”. The electrical voltage measurement of the deflected current (recorded current) reflects the intensity of the magnetic field surrounding the sensor.
The relative position of sensor 1 in relation to the magnets 2 is thus an important factor because it defines the measuring range and the precision (sensitivity) of sensor 1. Indeed, the power and orientation (relative to sensor 1) of the magnet 2 used, influence the maximum distance at which the magnetic field can be perceived. The magnetic field produced attenuates non-linearly with distance, so these parameters also set the sensitivity of the valvometer as a function of distance and therefore the precision of the measurement. A strong magnetic field (short distance) can saturate the Hall effect sensor 1 and a weak magnetic field (long distance) will induce low voltage variations close to the noise of the sensor 1. These two effects will result in an inability to have a precise or accurate measurement of the inter-valvar distance D at short or long distance from the source (magnet). The positioning of this sensor 1 - magnet 2 assembly must therefore be defined according to the species studied (maximum valve opening) as well as the objective of the study.
In order to be able to compare the data acquired on different individuals, it is necessary to standardize the fixing of the valvometers. To do this, a fixing wedge system has been specifically developed, making it possible to guide the fixing of the valvometer (sensor 1 and straight cylindrical magnets 2). This wedge 4 is composed of two parts 5, 6 joined and articulated together by a hinge 7 (Figures 3 to 5). The dimensions of the wedge 4 must be adapted to the species studied, taking into account the shape of the shell and the orientation of the magnet 2 chosen in relation to the sensor 1. The wedge 4 presented as an example in Figures 3 to 5 was designed to study scallops. It allows sensors 1 and magnets 2 to be placed in parallel and with a fixed initial distance (13 mm in this example).
The fixation protocol proceeds as follows:
- the bivalve is taken out of the water then its shell is dried,
- the areas of the shell chosen to fix the sensor and the magnet are cleaned. They can be sanded and favor the end of the shell in the longitudinal axis in order to maximize the variations in inter-valvar distances D measured in the event of movement (figures 6 to 9),
- the sensor (
- the user keeps the hold and the bivalve closed for the time necessary to ensure good adhesion of the resin,
- the wedge is carefully removed,
- the bivalve is now equipped and returned to the water.
The sensors are sensitive to surrounding magnetic fields. Likewise, an individual is likely to be influenced by the behavior of these conspecifics located nearby. Thus, the individuals being tracked must be deployed individually within non-magnetic media. This individualization thus makes it possible to obtain independent replicas during monitoring. For in situ studies, individuals are deployed in individual cages. Thus, in order to limit interactions between sensors or individuals, each bivalve is deployed in isolation (individual cage or tank).
The raw signal from the valvometer is then transformed into an actual valve opening (in mm) via a post-deployment calibration step.
For this purpose, the data from the sensors are voltage variations (V) reflecting the variations in magnetic fields perceived. Based on existing processes, a calibration of the sensors is systematically carried out after their deployment in order to obtain the actual valve opening values (mm).
- opening of the valves of the individual being monitored, for example section of the inter-valvar muscles or by using a muscle relaxant,
- carrying out measurements at different known openings (calibration points), covering the entire opening range of the bivalve (use of several shims of known and different thickness:
- establishment of a calibration curve by applying a theoretical model to the previously measured calibration points, reflecting the relationship between the recorded signal (voltage) and the distance,
- conversion of raw data (V): each voltage value is associated with the corresponding real aperture (calibration) resulting from the calibration curve. The raw data (V) is then automatically transcribed into real aperture (mm),
- the time series is now calibrated and reflects the real variations in valve opening of the bivalve (figures 10, 10A and 10B).
