The term “microfluidic distillation” refers to distillation devices made on a scale at which gravity becomes less important than the capillary forces acting on the fluids.
It is common to separate liquid mixtures by distillation. However, distillation requires large volumes which are not compatible with all needs. This is the case, among others, for microfluidic applications.
Document US2008/0275653 relates to a flash microdistillation device, in which the medium to be analyzed is partially evaporated, then separated using a capillary system which retains the liquid phase. The liquid and gas flows circulate in co-current. Such a device can lead to insufficient performance in terms of separation.
The work of KF Lam et. al. , “On-chip microscale distillation for acetone-water separation” , 14th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Science, October 7, 2010, Groningen, NL, show a microfluidic distillation device comprising two parallel zones, one of the two zones comprising a mesh of micropillars capable of retaining the liquid phase by capillarity. Such an arrangement allows a flow of liquid and gaseous flows in counter-current, favorable to the separation of the compounds, but presents a weak exchange interface between the flows.

- le deuxième canal comprend une paroi sensiblement lisse en vis-à-vis de la paroi de fond du premier canal ;- the second channel comprises a substantially smooth wall facing the bottom wall of the first channel;

- le conduit de séparation s’étend de manière sensiblement rectiligne entre les première et seconde sorties ;- the separation conduit extends in a substantially rectilinear manner between the first and second outlets;
- le dispositif de séparation est configuré de sorte que l’interface entre les premier et deuxième canaux soit disposée sensiblement horizontalement ;- the separation device is configured so that the interface between the first and second channels is arranged substantially horizontally;

A length of the conduit 26 between the first and second ends is of the order of a few centimeters, for example between 5 and 10 centimeters. In a variant not shown, the fluid separation conduit has a non-rectilinear shape with, for example, one or more curved portions. The conduit has, for example, an S or serpentine shape to increase its total length.
Le bloc supérieur 32 est placé sur le bloc inférieur 30 selon la verticale Z.In the embodiment shown, column 20 comprises a lower block 30 and an upper block 32 assembled together. Each of said blocks extends substantially in the direction ). The upper block 32 is placed on the lower block 30 along the vertical Z.

More precisely, the lower channel 40 comprises a bottom surface 46 and a plurality of pads 44, projecting relative to said bottom surface and forming said plurality of reliefs.
Ladite largeur 56 est par exemple de l’ordre de 1 mm.Preferably, the total height 62 of the conduit 26 is less than 75%, more preferably less than 50%, even more preferably less than 15%, of the width 56 of said conduit. Said width 56 is in particular less than or equal to 1 cm, more preferably less than or equal to 5 mm. Said width 56 is for example of the order of 1 mm.
Column 20 further comprises: a first 64 and a second 66 outlets; and a fluid inlet 68. The thermal diffuser 90 comprises a plate 95 formed of a thermally conductive material, such as aluminum. Said plate 95 is placed under the column 20, in contact with the lower block 30. The plate 95 extends along X between a first and a second end, respectively opposite the first 27 and the second 28 ends of conduit 26.
Optionally, the plate 95 has orifices 96 distributed along X and making it possible to accommodate a thermocouple.
The hot source 92 is placed in the first groove 86 and is capable of supplying heat to the column 20. The hot source is for example an electrical heating resistance.
La source froide est par exemple un circuit d’eau froide passant par la seconde gorge 88.The cold source 94 is placed in the second groove 88 and is capable of cooling the column 20. The cold source is for example a cold water circuit passing through the second groove 88.
The thermal diffuser 90 further comprises: a first thermally conductive bar 97, extending along Y and disposed between the hot source 92 and the first end of the plate 95; and a second thermally conductive bar 98, extending along Y and placed between the cold source 94 and the second end of the plate 95.
An operating method of the installation 10 will now be described in the case of a mixture of liquids.
The hot source 92 and the cold source 94 of the thermal module 24 of the microfluidic distillation device 12 are put into operation, so as to create a thermal gradient between the first and the second ends of the plate 95.
Un mélange liquide de composés à séparer est alors injecté au niveau de l’entrée 68 de la colonne 20.A liquid mixture of compounds to be separated is then injected at inlet 68 of column 20.
En raison du phénomène de capillarité entre les plots 44, le liquide se répartit préférentiellement le long du canal inférieur 40.Due to the phenomenon of capillarity between the pads 44, the liquid is distributed preferentially along the lower channel 40.
The gas thus formed creates a flow 104 in the upper channel 42, towards the cold zone 102. On contact with said cold zone, the gas is partially condensed and again feeds a flow 106 of liquid in the lower channel 40 towards of hot zone 100.
The flow 106 of liquid and the flow 104 of gas therefore circulate countercurrent inside the conduit 26, respectively in the lower channel 40 and in the upper channel 42.
The reduced size and spacing between the pads 44 allows the liquid phase to form, between said pads, a plurality of menisci with a small radius of curvature. A pressure difference of the order of a few mbars is thus created between the liquid phase and the gas phase. This pressure difference keeps the gas/liquid interface stable and promotes counter-current operation.
The liquid/gas exchange surface extends substantially over the interface 60 between the lower 40 and upper 42 channels. The significant width 56 of the interface 60, compared to the total height 62 of the conduit 26, also promotes exchanges. of matter between the liquid and gas phases.
Un distillat 108 (
Avec un débit d’alimentation faible au niveau de l’entrée 68, ledit débit étant de l’ordre de 30 à 300 µL/heure, la colonne 20 et l’installation 10 permettent d’obtenir des séparations correspondant à une hauteur de plateau théorique d’environ 3 cm.With a low supply flow rate at the inlet 68, said flow rate being of the order of 30 to 300 µL/hour, the column 20 and the installation 10 make it possible to obtain separations corresponding to a plate height theoretical about 3 cm.
The large width 56 of the conduit 26, compared to its height 62, allows the interface 60 to have a high area compared to the height 49 of the lower channel 40. A large interfacial area compared to the depth of the channel improves the performance of the column by reducing the theoretical plate height.
In addition, the large width 56 makes it possible to limit the pressure losses linked to the movement of the liquid phase between the pads 44. It is therefore possible to work at flow rates higher than those of the state of the art, while remaining within a range of system stability.
