DOMAINE DE L’INVENTIONFIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a modular material for the construction of transport infrastructures and urban developments giving pride of place to the recovery of recycled or biosourced LDPE. The present invention also relates to a modular material obtained by such a method.

ARRIERE PLAN TECHNOLOGIQUETECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

Associated with current environmental problems, the use and formulation of innovative materials based on recycled plastics is a very important area of research.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE; density 0.91 to 0.925) is a high-consumption thermoplastic polymer obtained by polymerization of ethylene. This material is one of the most widely used plastics in industry and agriculture. Due to its great abundance, recycled LDPE is proving to be a resource of choice for the production of new materials.

The integration of plastics into bituminous binder formulations is a technology already used in many projects and applications. Most of the solutions proposed consist of mixing bitumen with recycled polymers to obtain a binder with better performance (increased mechanical resistance, slower climatic aging, better resistance to permanent deformation, etc.). In India, for example, more than 30,000 km of bituminous mixes already incorporate recycled plastics. However, the proportion of recycled plastics mixed with bitumen for most formulations remains low (from 3 to 20%). As the binder represents only 5% of the formulation on average, the final proportion of plastic in the mix is extremely low.

Thus, a need remains for the provision of a simple and economically attractive process for the preparation of a material useful in road construction which gives pride of place to the recovery of recycled plastics, in particular recycled LDPE.
