Description
The invention lies in the technical field of network antennas in progressive mode, used in particular in the field of Navigation Doppler Radars (RDN).
Radars of the navigation Doppler radar type use antennas positioned under an aircraft (for example a helicopter) capable of radiating several beams off-center along the axis of movement of the aircraft on the one hand and along the angle of depression (axis transverse) on the other hand. The radar system then uses the data resulting from the determination of the Doppler frequency shifts for each of the beams analyzed in successive switchings. For this, it is customary to use network antennas in progressive mode, the configuration of which naturally and at low cost makes it possible to obtain a beam depointed in several directions.
An array antenna operating in progressive mode consists of a set of radiating elements arranged in cascade and successively excited by an electromagnetic wave. It can for example take the form of one or more rectangular waveguides radiating through slots excited as the electromagnetic wave progresses inside the waveguide(s), from a end of these towards the other end, or any other structure within which an electromagnetic wave progresses, for example an antenna printed with patches connected by conductive tracks. The rest of the description refers to an array antenna consisting of one or more rectangular waveguides comprising alternately inclined slots, but the invention applies in the same way by considering other types of guided propagation media and other types of radiating elements, such as for example rectangular or non-rectangular waveguides, with or without inclined slots, a printed patch or slot antenna in which the topology of the printed excitation line of the patches or slits generate phase progression, etc… which behave comparably.
Subsequently, the operation of array antennas in progressive mode is first described by limiting the antenna to a linear array of radiating elements, in order to facilitate understanding, then for an antenna consisting of a plurality of linear arrays of radiating elements.
Let λ 0 be the wavelength in the air of the electromagnetic signal at the working frequency, λ Gray the wavelength guided in the waveguide and Δx the spacing between the inclined slots (with Δx < λ 0 ). If all the slots are arranged with an alternate direction of inclination, and taking Δx = λ Gray /2 + δx, then the phase shift Δϕ between adjacent sources (slots) is equal to Δϕ = π + π.δx / λ Gray .
Thus, a directional antenna can be formed by a rectangular waveguide comprising inclined and regularly spaced slots. By dimensioning the waveguide and the slots so that an electromagnetic wave injected by one of the ends of the guide propagates therein with a phase difference Δϕ between two consecutive slots spaced apart by a distance Δx, the angular pointing of the beam formed by the linear antenna (counted from the normal to the array) is then α such that Δϕ = 2π.Δx. sin α / λ 0 .

As indicated above, by introducing an electromagnetic wave 201 through a first end of a waveguide 202, the radiated electromagnetic field 203 is oriented in an angular direction α which is a function of λ 0 , λ Gray and the distance between the radiating elements. By symmetry, by introducing an electromagnetic wave 211 through the other end of the waveguide 202, the radiated electromagnetic field 212 is oriented in the opposite direction, namely in the angular direction −α. Thus, by switching excitation (P in ) and load, the phases progress in one direction or in the opposite direction, and the beam of the antenna is oriented according to an angle or according to its opposite.
What has just been presented for a linear array of radiating elements can be applied more broadly to the case of an antenna comprising a plurality M of linear arrays of radiating elements placed in a network.
The spacing Δy between the radiating tracks 302 is calculated so that an electromagnetic wave injected by one end of the supply track 301 propagates with a phase difference Δψ between two consecutive radiating tracks. Thus, the wave propagates along the supply track 301 and generates at each radiating track that it encounters a field coupled with a phase step Δψ to the adjacent radiating tracks. The residual wave continues to progress down the feeder track, losing power each time it encounters a radiating track and supplies power to it. Typically, the antenna is sized so that when the feed track meets the last radiating track, the wave supplies it with most of the rest of the power it carries, with the remainder of the power being sent over a load positioned on the other end of the feed track.
Le faisceau rayonné est donc incliné d’un angle β compté à partir de la normale au réseau tel que Δψ = 2.π.Δy.sin(β) / λ0.Let λ 0 be the wavelength in the air of the electromagnetic signal at the working frequency, λ Ga lim the wavelength guided in the supply track and Δy the spacing between the radiating tracks (with Δy < λ 0 ). By taking Δy = λ Galim /2 + δy, then the phase shift Δψ between adjacent radiating tracks is equal to Δψ = π + π.δy / λ G Alim . The radiated beam is therefore inclined by an angle β counted from the normal to the grating such that Δψ=2.π.Δy.sin(β)/λ 0 .
By positioning the radiating tracks perpendicular to the feed track, it is then possible to combine the two effects in order to depoint the beam in the direction [α, β].
The invention described below applies regardless of the means of coupling between supply guides and radiating guides.
The direction of the beams is limited to a combination of the angles α and β. However, it may prove useful to be able to transmit and receive radio signals in directions other than those accessible with current antenna solutions, for example to implement various additional processing operations on the signals acquired by the antenna in directions not falling under a combination of α and β. This proves impossible with network antennas in progressive mode according to the state of the art since their fixed structure does not allow them to radiate in beams according to directions other than the directions α and β linked to the spacing of the slots and the distance between the linear arrays of radiating elements.
A simple solution to the problem posed would be to position two physically separate progressive mode array antennas side by side, positioned head-to-tail, each fed from one end and configured to have beams in the appropriate directions. This requires inserting loads between the two antennas to absorb the power residues, which is difficult to achieve since it is impossible to simply insert loads in the middle of the waveguides. Moreover, the surface constraints exerted on the antennas, in particular when they are embarked on aircrafts, are important, and this solution is sub-optimal in terms of consumed surface.
An object of the invention is therefore to allow the implementation of an array antenna in progressive mode whose beam can be oriented along two first complementary directions, and along at least one additional direction decorrelated from the two first directions, the proposed solution must be simple to implement and not cumbersome.
- a first supply means coupled to the first end of the M lines of the array of radiating elements by first coupling means so as to be able to transmit in progressive mode in two directions an electromagnetic wave by each of the M lines of the array of elements radiating elements, the first feed means, the first coupling means and at least one of the radiating elements of each of the M lines being configured so that the array antenna can radiate in a first direction [α, β] and in a second direction [α, -β], with α and β respectively two depointing angles relative to the normal of the array antenna in orthogonal directions,
- a second power supply means coupled to the second end of L lines of the array of radiating elements by second coupling means so as to be able to transmit in progressive mode an electromagnetic wave by each of the L lines of the array of radiating elements, with L less than or equal to M, the second feed means, the second coupling means and at least one of the radiating elements of each of the L lines being configured so that the array antenna can radiate in at least a third direction [γ, δ], with γ and δ respectively two depointing angles relative to the normal of the array antenna in said orthogonal directions,
Avantageusement, le deuxième moyen d’alimentation est configuré de manière à pouvoir transmettre une onde électromagnétique sur chacune des L lignes du réseau d’éléments rayonnants en mode progressif selon deux directions afin que l’antenne réseau puisse en outre rayonner selon une quatrième direction [γ, -δ].Advantageously, the second supply means is configured so as to be able to transmit an electromagnetic wave on each of the L lines of the array of radiating elements in progressive mode in two directions so that the array antenna can also radiate in a fourth direction [ γ, -δ].
According to one embodiment, the first supply means and the first coupling means are configured so as to transmit an electromagnetic wave in progressive mode to the M lines with a constant phase shift Δψ between two successive lines, the second supply means and the second coupling means are configured so as to transmit an electromagnetic wave in progressive mode to the L lines to which the second supply means are coupled with a constant phase shift Δψ' between two successive lines, with Δψ different from Δψ'.
- a first group of adjacent radiating elements positioned towards the first end of the line and adapted to the transmission in progressive mode of an electromagnetic wave by the first supply means,
- a second group of adjacent radiating elements positioned towards the second end of the line and adapted to the transmission in progressive mode of an electromagnetic wave by the second supply means.
According to one embodiment of the array antenna in progressive mode according to the invention, for each of the L lines of the array of radiating elements coupled to the second supply means, the radiating elements of the first group of elements are spaced apart by a distance Δx, and the radiating elements of the second group of elements are spaced apart by a distance Δx', with Δx different from Δx'.
Avantageusement :
- the first power supply means, the first coupling means and the radiating elements of the first group of radiating elements are configured so that after having excited in progressive mode each radiating element of the first group of radiating elements, a wave transmitted in each of the L lines by the first supply means can be entirely dissipated by the radiating elements of the second group of radiating elements,
- the second power supply means, the second coupling means and the radiating elements of the second group of radiating elements are configured so that after having excited in progressive mode each radiating element of the second group of radiating elements, a wave transmitted in each of the L lines (733) by the second supply means can be entirely dissipated by the radiating elements of the first group of radiating elements.
According to one embodiment of an array antenna according to the invention, the first feed means, the first coupling means and the radiating elements of the M-L lines not connected to the second feed means are configured so that after having excited in progressive mode the radiating elements of one of the M-L lines, the residual power level of an electromagnetic wave transmitted in said M-L line by the first supply means is lower than the power radiated by one of the radiating elements of the line, and in which the M-L lines are terminated by a load connected to their second end.
According to another embodiment of an array antenna according to the invention, the first feed means and the first coupling means are configured to transmit an electromagnetic wave of substantially identical power over the M lines, and the M-L lines not connected to the second supply means are short-circuited at their second end.
The invention also relates to an antenna system comprising an array antenna in progressive mode according to one embodiment of the invention and switching means connected to the first supply means and to the second supply means of the array antenna, the antenna system being configured to control the switching means so that the array antenna in progressive mode forms a beam chosen from among a set of at least three beams pointed in different directions.
