Description
The technical field of the invention is that of powered projectiles and in particular powered artillery projectiles.
Many solutions are known for increasing the range of an artillery projectile. It is thus known to provide the rear part of the projectile with a hollow base or a gas generator rear block (better known by the Anglo-Saxon name of Base-Bleed).
These solutions make it possible to reduce the drag of the projectile base which is generated by the so-called “dead water” zone behind the base, which zone is in depression compared to the upstream undisturbed flow.
The increase in range they provide is interesting in percentage but remains limited in absolute value, we can thus go from 30km range to around 40 km thanks to a Base-Bleed.
To increase the range of artillery projectiles, it has already been proposed to provide these projectiles with propellants. Thus the patents FR2479905 and FR2522134 describe a shell comprising at the level of its warhead a small powder propellant which is ignited during the initial phase of the trajectory to extend to a certain extent the impulse resulting from the cannon fire.
It has also been proposed, for example in patents RU2513326 and US5853143, to equip an artillery projectile with a ramjet type propellant.
Une telle solution, par rapport à un projectile autopropulsé à poudre permet de réduire la masse du matériau propulsif embarqué (l'oxydant ou comburant étant alors constitué par l'oxygène de l'air).Such a solution, compared to a self-propelled powder projectile, makes it possible to reduce the mass of the on-board propellant (the oxidant or oxidizer then being constituted by the oxygen in the air).
This solution is, however, generally implemented for projectiles with fired shots and for which it is sought to reduce the duration of the flight. See for example patent FR2629584 which describes an anti helicopter projectile.
The propelled projectiles have a strong ballistic dispersion which increases moreover strongly with the range.
It therefore becomes essential, if one wishes to increase the range of the projectile beyond the conventional values of 40 or 42 km and meet the needs of future artillery, and in particular to obtain metric precision associated with a large range (even independent of range), to provide the projectile with means to correct its trajectory.
The known trajectory correction means comprise control surfaces arranged at the level of the projectile warhead (usually called "Ducks Actuating System" or CAS). These means are generally associated with shells or projectiles which are not propelled by ramjet, such as those described by patents EP1297292, FR2768809, EP2767794, or FR3054030.
Indeed, the installation of trajectory correction control surfaces is not very compatible with the geometry of a ramjet projectile and the aerodynamics of the axial air intake which must not present any obstacle or aerodynamic singularity to ensure the priming of combustion and its nominal operation in cruising phase.
It is the object of the invention to propose a projectile propelled by ramjet which is however controllable in order to give it a precision of achievement of its objective independently of the range, therefore of the flight time.
The invention is more particularly described in its application to an artillery shell.
Thus, the subject of the invention is a projectile propelled by ramjet, projectile comprising an external body and a deployable tail, projectile comprising inside the body a chamber in which is housed a block of ablatable annular semipropellant as well as an envelope containing a military charge, the external body having an air inlet to allow air to enter the chamber, the body also comprising a rear opening on which a nozzle is positioned, projectile characterized in that it comprises a module for piloting arranged axially and which extends through the air inlet, the piloting module being able to be moved axially by a motor means, during the flight of the projectile and at a desired instant on trajectory, from a rear position in which it does not shut off the air inlet, towards a front position in which it comes to shut off the air inlet, the control module containing at least two governors es duck which can be deployed outside the projectile after closing the air intake.
The control module may contain a calculation means incorporating control algorithms, the calculation means ensuring the control of the movement of the control module at the desired time on the trajectory.
More particularly, the propelled projectile will constitute an artillery projectile intended to be fired by a cannon, a projectile whose external body will wear a slip belt.
According to a particular embodiment, the piloting module may be before firing in its front position, the piloting module retreating by inertia during the firing of the gun so as to come occupy its rear position in which it will be in abutment against the envelope military charge.
Advantageously, the projectile may include a locking means ensuring the immobilization of the control module in the rear position.
The drive means may comprise a means for storing elastic potential energy, this means being activated by the retraction of the control module from its front part to its rear part, the locking means being released at the desired instant on the trajectory.
According to another embodiment, the piloting module is before firing in its front position, the piloting module being able to be moved by the motor means, after firing and at a desired instant on trajectory, so as to come to occupy its rear position .
The drive means can thus move, progressively or incrementally, at different times along the path, the control module from its front position to its rear position.
Alternatively, the drive means may move the control module to its rear position at the end of the piloted phase so as to clear the air intake and thus accelerate the projectile during a terminal phase of its trajectory .
Advantageously, the projectile will include a rear base blocking the nozzle during the firing, base ensuring the maintenance of the rear tail and which is ejected at the exit of the barrel.
The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows of particular embodiments, description made with reference to the appended drawings and in which:

Referring to FIG. 1, a projectile 1 propelled by ramjet according to an embodiment of the invention comprises a body 2 and a deployable tail unit 3 which is kept folded, during the storage phases and during the ballistic course in the tube , by a rear thrust base 4. The body 2 carries a slip belt 5 which makes it possible to ensure gas tightness inside the barrel of the weapon and which also makes it possible to limit by sliding the speed of rotation which can be communicated to the projectile by the scratches in the barrel of the weapon (the slip rate is around 90% minimum). In fact, an artillery tube is generally rifled to ensure the rotation of the projectiles.
The base 4 will be ejected at the exit of the barrel of the weapon and the tail 3 will deploy to ensure the aerostabilization of the projectile on trajectory.
Aerostabilization is necessary due to the architecture of the projectile (low longitudinal moment of inertia which does not allow the criteria of gyroscopic stability to be respected) and the decrease in the roll speed on the trajectory when the projectile is in the piloted phase. due to the high roll damping coefficient (Clp). Aerostabilization is finally necessary to make possible subsequent piloting via control surfaces. The control of the steering deflections to the roll position of the projectile is in fact limited in roll speed by the bandwidth of the computer and the actuators.
The projectile must be aerostabilized, the presence of a slip belt is therefore necessary to limit the mechanical stresses which increase like the square of the speed of rotation and to avoid the Magnus effects which can dynamically destabilize the projectile.
The speed of rotation of the shell at the outlet of the tube is of the order of some 10 turns per second.
Such non-slip belts are well known to those skilled in the art in the field of artillery projectiles. We can consult the patents W003001141, EP1693646 and EP1386120 which describe such belts.
Les empennages déployant sont également bien connus de l'Homme du Métier (voir le brevet EP0905473).The deploying empennages are also well known to those skilled in the art (see patent EP0905473).
The projectile 1 has inside the body 2 a chamber 6 in which is housed an annular block 7 of a fuel consisting of an ablatable semi-propellant.
Chamber 6 also receives an envelope 8 which contains a military charge 9, for example an explosive charge.
The casing 8 is connected to the body 2 by radial connecting arms 10 which are profiled and which are regularly distributed angularly. There are here three groups of three arms 10. The three arms of each group are spaced angularly from each other by 120 °.
The body 2 has an annular air inlet 11 which is closed during the storage and firing phase by a control module 12 (this advanced position - FIG. 1 - is its reference position).
The air inlet 11 is intended to allow air to enter the chamber 6 when the projectile is in the propelled phase. The body 2 also includes a rear opening 13 on which a nozzle 14 is positioned.
The base 4, the primary function of which is to accelerate the projectile by communicating to it the thrust of the firing gases, also makes it possible to close off the nozzle 14 during firing, thus isolating the fuel block 7 from the ramjet from the hot gases of the charge. propellant that pushes the projectile out of the barrel.
The control module 12 contains at least two duck control surfaces 15 (arranged in the same plane and materializing a control plane) as well as their deployment mechanism (not shown). Such deployable control devices are well known and described in particular by patents FR2949848, FR2846080, FR2864613 and FR2891618.
It is thus easy to integrate duck control surfaces and their deployment and orientation mechanism in a control module having a diameter of the order of 60 to 90 millimeters which is incorporated in a projectile of caliber 155 millimeters.
The control module 12 contains sensors (inertial, magnetic ...) and also a calculation means 16 incorporating control algorithms allowing the control of the steering control to direct the projectile towards a target whose coordinates will have been introduced into the calculation means 16 before firing by a programming means not shown, for example by a connection interface or by contactless programming through an inductive loop connected to the calculation means 16.
The control module 12 is arranged axially and it extends through the air inlet 11 and in particular has a point 12a extending in front of the air inlet 11. The control module 12 can be moved axially along the axis 26 of the projectile by a motor means, during the flight of the projectile and at a desired instant on trajectory. The movement will be from a rear position, in which the control module 12 is in abutment against the casing 8 of the military charge 9, towards a front position in which it comes to close off the air inlet 11, therefore stopping combustion of the fuel block 7 and stopping the ramjet. This device therefore makes it possible to control the duration of operation of the ramjet which is one of the advantages of the invention.
Le module de pilotage 12 comporte un épaulement périphérique 12b qui vient en appui contre une surface de butée annulaire portée par le corps 2 lorsque ce module 12 se trouve dans la position d'obturation représentée à la figureThe control module 12 has a peripheral shoulder 12b which comes to bear against an annular abutment surface carried by the body 2 when this module 12 is in the closed position shown in the figure
1.1.
Of course the external profile of the control module 12 is defined so as to favor the flow of air and its entry inside the chamber 6 when the control module 12 is in its rear position and the entry air 11 is released. This profile is well known to those skilled in the art, and wind tunnel tests are conventionally used to optimize this profile which performs the important function of compressing and heating the flow upstream of the combustion chamber 6.
It is the same for the external profile of the casing 8 associated with that of the nozzle 14, which transforms the heat energy created in the combustion chamber 6 and at the origin of the thrust into kinetic energy. that of its rear end 8a which is rounded opposite the neck 14a of the nozzle 14.
The calculation means 16 makes it possible to control the movement of the control module 12 at a desired instant on the trajectory and it also makes it possible to control the deployment of the fins 15 as will be described later.
The movement is made by sliding the control module 12 for example on one or more columns 17 integral with the casing 8 and which penetrate into the control module 12 when the latter recedes. One can alternatively use a single column or central axis. The drive means may be constituted by a small engine incorporated in the control module 12 and meshing for example on a rack carried by one of the balusters 17.
More simply, when there are only two positions required for the control module (rear position and front position or shutter of the air inlet), and as shown schematically in Figures 3a and 3b, at least one balusters 17 (or all balusters) may be equipped with a tension spring 18 which will be fixed on the one hand to a flange 19 of the baluster 17 and on the other hand to the wall of the control module 12. This spring traction 18 will constitute the driving means which is here a means of storage of elastic potential energy.
The spring 18 is at rest, in the unstretched state. It can be seen that the baluster 17 passes through a transverse wall 20 integral with the module 12 and which guides it. It can also be seen that the wall 20 carries an electromagnetic lock 21 (shown very diagrammatically) which is intended to come into engagement in a groove 22 of the baluster 17. This electromagnetic lock 21 constitutes a locking means which will make it possible to ensure
This recoil has the effect of tensioning the tension spring 18 (storage of elastic potential energy). The control module 12 comes to bear against the casing 8 of the military charge 9.
The groove 22 is positioned opposite the electromagnetic lock 21 which ensures the locking of the column 17. In a conventional manner the electromagnetic lock 21 will include a spring pushing a locking finger in the groove 22. No energy is therefore required to locking.
At the desired instant on the trajectory, the calculation means will send a pulse 23 to the electromagnetic lock 21, causing the release of the latter. The spring 18 then ensures the return of the module 12 to its front position.
As can be seen in FIGS. 3a and 3b, the baluster may be tubular to allow a wire 24 to pass allowing the firing of the military charge 9 to be controlled by means of a detonator 25.
Of course these drawings are very schematic. In particular, the method of fixing the balusters 17 on the casing 8 is not shown, nor the method of fixing the detonator 25 as well as the routing of this wire 24 through the wall of the casing 8. Man du Métier masters the different technologies enabling these different functions to be carried out and which are robust in a gunnery environment (strong accelerations, large temperature variation range).
Alternatively it would be possible to use one or more compression springs. We can also define other types of locking means.
La figure 2 est une courbe montrant les différentes phases de vol du projectile 1 selon l'invention.FIG. 2 is a curve showing the different flight phases of the projectile 1 according to the invention.
The abscissa axis corresponds to the range R of the projectile and the ordinate axis to the altitude H of the projectile.
For a shot from the point of origin O, the projectile goes through several phases.
When firing in the weapon the thrust base 4 is in place, it maintains in the folded position the tail 3 and protects it, as well as the fuel block 7 (FIG. 1).
The acceleration of the firing has the effect of making the control module 12 move back which locks in abutment against the casing 8 (FIGS. 3b and 4a).
This roll speed is obtained by an angular setting of the fins 3a relative to the axis 26 of the projectile or by a bevel made on the leading edge or on the trailing edge of each fin 3a. This residual rotation is necessary to pilot the projectile 1 over 360 ° and essential in the case of piloting by a single control surface 15.
The exit from the barrel of the weapon is done at a minimum speed of the order of 700 m / s, or of the order of Mach 2, which corresponds, from the point of view of artillery to a choice of charges propellants ensuring a fire in "zone 4". There is no upper speed limit to allow the initiation of a ramjet, the only limit of this type of propellant is the speed which is compatible with subsonic combustion inside the projectile, i.e. a speed of projectile of the order of Mach 5 (1700 m / s).
Such a speed (Mach 2) allows the starting of the ramjet formed by the general architecture of the projectile 1, once the control module 12 positioned behind and the annular air inlet 11 released.
This priming speed is optimal for ignition and operation of the ramjet. The air flow which enters the chamber 6 through the air inlet 11 is compressed, it heats up and spontaneously initiates the annular fuel block 7 and is accelerated in the nozzle 14, then evacuated.
The fuel block 7 which is a semi-propellant lines the walls of the combustion chamber 6 and reacts spontaneously (self-ignition) with the flow coming from the annular air inlet 11. This air has been compressed and heated further at its slowing down by the profile of the air inlet 11 which acts as a static compressor and leads to the priming of the ramjet.
The combustion of the semi-propellant produces hot gases ejected into the nozzle 14. All of the gases are converted into effective thrust and strongly accelerates the projectile 1. The speed obtained is between Mach 2 and Mach 5 (from 700m / s to 1700m / s) and a maximum altitude of around 25,000 m can be obtained in about one minute.
La durée de la phase propulsée peut varier suivant l'architecture du statoréacteur (section de l'entrée d'airThe duration of the propelled phase can vary depending on the architecture of the ramjet (air intake section
11, masse de combustible, débit massique éjecté...) et les conditions de tir et peut aller de quelques secondes à quelques dizaines de secondes (1 minute au maximum, la limite étant fixée par l'altitude).11, fuel mass, mass flow ejected ...) and the firing conditions and can range from a few seconds to a few tens of seconds (1 minute maximum, the limit being fixed by the altitude).
This propelled phase is identified by the arrow P in Figure 2. The projectile 1 is in the configuration of Figure 4b. This figure shows the partially consumed fuel block 7.
Le projectile 1 arrive à l'apogée A de la trajectoire (H=25 km) au bout d'environ 50 kilomètres (figure 2).Projectile 1 arrives at the apogee A of the trajectory (H = 25 km) after approximately 50 kilometers (Figure 2).
Le moyen de calcul 16 provoque également le déploiement des gouvernes canard 15.At this stage, the calculation means 16 controls the release of the motor means which causes the control module 12 to return to its front position (FIG. 4c) in which it closes the annular air inlet 11. The calculation means 16 causes also the deployment of duck control surfaces 15.
The deployment mechanism of the duck control surfaces is a conventional mechanism which it is not necessary to describe in detail. We can for example refer to the patents: FR2949848, FR2864613, FR2846079, FR2846080 and WO2007133247, which describe such deployment mechanisms.
The moment of deployment is programmed before firing and it depends on the conditions of the firing considered. It is clear that, whatever the moment at which the movement of the control module 12 forwards is triggered, the closure of the annular air inlet 11 will cause the fuel block 7 to be extinguished by lack of oxygen. and stopping the propulsion.
It is therefore possible, depending on operational requirements, to stop the thrust of the ramjet before climax A and to let the projectile then continue its ballistic trajectory. The zone Z in which the stopping of the ramjet can be controlled has been delimited in FIG. 2 by vertical dotted lines.
This zone corresponds to operating times between a few seconds and a minute (maximum). The propulsion efficiency is optimal at the start of the trajectory and in all cases before climax A, which corresponds to maximum ranges for the propelled phase P of between 5 and 50 km.
Once the duck control surfaces 15 have been deployed, the projectile is in its guided phase G (FIG. 2) the calculation means 16 will control the piloting of the projectile in the direction of the objective T, the coordinates of which have been entered in memory before firing. The calculation means 16 is coupled to a means for positioning the projectile which may include a GPS and / or Galileo type receiver and / or an inertial unit.
D'une façon classique et qu'il n'est pas nécessaire de décrire, pour réaliser le pilotage, les gouvernes déployées sont pivotées par un ou plusieurs moteurs qui sont commandésIn a conventional manner and which it is not necessary to describe, to carry out the control, the deployed control surfaces are pivoted by one or more motors which are controlled
Due to the thrust obtained in the propelled phase P by the ramjet, it becomes possible to reach ranges greater than 80 km using conventional artillery used under normal firing conditions and at least on charge 4 (this which allows to limit the wear of the tube and to increase the potential of use of the tube) and with a classic shell profile while having a better shooting accuracy (in reference to a classic shooting at 40km with BaseBleed) thanks to the guide means.
Accuracy can be metric or decametric depending on the guidance techniques used and the on-board sensors, and it is independent of flight time, therefore range and weather conditions.
It is the whole point of the invention to provide these operational advantages by using conventional artillery and existing firing charges for artillery systems.
According to this mode, the motor means is constituted by an electric motor 27 which is equipped with a toothed wheel 28. The latter meshes with a threaded nut 29 which is engaged on a central axis 30 carrying a thread 31. The electric motor 27 is secured to the control module 12 by a flange 33. It is connected to the calculation means 16 by a wire connection 34. Its operation is controlled by the calculation means 16 which will incorporate algorithms ensuring the rotation of the motor 27 in one direction or the other as a function of the firing chronometry (therefore of the location of the projectile 1 on its trajectory).
The central axis 30 is integral with the casing 8 and it is coaxial with the axis 26 of the projectile 1. The central axis 30 passes through a bottom wall 12c of the control module 12 by a hole 12d which has a larger diameter to that of the axis 30 and does not hinder the rotation of the central axis 30.
Ces colonnettes 17 assurent le guidage du mouvement de translation du module de pilotage 12 par rapport à l'enveloppe 8 tout en interdisant la rotation relative du module 12 par rapport à l'enveloppe 8.Three balusters 17, regularly distributed angularly around the axis 26 (only two are visible on this cross section), are integral with the casing 8 and fitted sliding in holes in the bottom wall 12c of the control module 12. These balusters 17 guide the translational movement of the control module 12 relative to the casing 8 while preventing the relative rotation of the module 12 relative to the casing 8.
The walls 35 may have surfaces covered with an anti-friction coating to facilitate the rotation of the nut 29. Depending on the necessary strokes, they may possibly be drilled so as not to impede the passage of the baluster 17.
L'axe central 30 étant immobile en rotation et en translation par rapport à l'enveloppe 8, la rotation du moteur 27 va provoquer la rotation de l'écrou 29 qui, étant solidaire en translation du module de pilotage 12, va provoquer le déplacement axial du module de pilotage 12 le long de l'axe central 30.The central axis 30 being immobile in rotation and in translation relative to the casing 8, the rotation of the motor 27 will cause the rotation of the nut 29 which, being integral in translation with the control module 12, will cause the displacement axial of the control module 12 along the central axis 30.
It is thus possible to move the control module 12 to give it:
- sa position arrière, en appui contre l'enveloppe 8 de la charge militaire 9 ;- its rear position, in abutment against the casing 8 of the military charge 9;
- sa position avant dans laquelle le module de pilotage 12 obture l'entrée d'air 11 ;- Its front position in which the control module 12 closes the air inlet 11;
- mais aussi toute position intermédiaire entre ces deux positions extrêmes.- but also any intermediate position between these two extreme positions.
It is thus easy to control the longitudinal position of the control module 12 and, unlike the embodiment described above, it becomes possible to move the control module 12 axially in a decorrelated manner relative to the firing of the projectile.
As seen in Figure 5, the control module 12 has a rear skirt 36 which slides on an outer wall 8b of the casing 8. Such an arrangement improves the continuity of the air flow during the operation of the ramjet and for all the longitudinal positions of the control module 12.
It also makes it possible to ensure a seal at this level, preventing the entry of air into the control module 12.
Thanks to this embodiment of the invention, it thus becomes possible to delay the start of the propulsion phase with respect to the cannon shot.
Such an arrangement proves to be advantageous from an operational point of view to improve the discretion of the shot by avoiding the ignition lights of the block 7 of semi-propellant. It also makes it possible to optimize the profile of the trajectory of the projectile 1. This embodiment also makes it possible to avoid exceeding Mach 5 during a shot at high initial speed.
Thanks to this embodiment, it is also possible to vary the section of the air inlet 11 as a function of the altitude of the projectile.
It is known that a ramjet requires a larger section air inlet for high altitudes.
The calculation means 16 will thus be able to control at the end of a first time interval after leaving the barrel of the weapon (of the order of a few tenths of seconds) the retreat of the control module 12 to open the air inlet 11 of a minimum section allowing the ramjet to be ignited.
After a second time interval, the calculation means 16 will cause the piloting module 12 to recede further to open the air inlet 11 a little more and thus optimize the operation of the ramjet by increasing the air flow for an altitude in which the air is less dense.
The calculation means 16 can thus move, progressively or incrementally, at different times along the path, the control module 12 from its front position (air inlet 11 closed) to its rear position (maximum opening of the inlet d 'air 11).
As an indicative example, FIG. 6 shows three curves Si, S 2 and S 3 which show the evolution of the air flow admitted (in kilograms per second - Kg / s) through an inlet air of constant section and as a function of the altitude H (in meters) of projectile 1. This flow decreases with altitude because the air is less dense at altitude and it also depends on the speed.
According to this indicative example, the curve Si corresponds to an air inlet section of 3000 mm 2 , the curve S2 corresponds to an air inlet section of 4000 mm 2 and the curve S3 corresponds to a section of 5000 mm air inlet 2 .
We therefore see that, to maintain the same flow rate in the ramjet, it suffices to increase the section of the air inlet 11. For example if we want to center the flow rate around 3 kg / s, we will pass the section with a value of the order of 3000 mm 2 between 0 and 3000 m altitude at a section of 4000 mm 2 between 3000 and 6000 m altitude, then at a section of 5000 mm 2 between 6000 m and 9500 m altitude.
Knowing the altitude of the points at which it is necessary to modify the section of the air inlet 11 and the firing table of the projectile, we also know the instants at which the calculation means 16 must send the displacement orders of the control module 12 as well as the amplitude that must be given to the displacement to increase the section (the displacement / section ratio is a construction data of the projectile). The times between each movement are of the order of 4 to 5 seconds. The increase in the cross section of the air inlet 11 can also be controlled continuously.
By way of example, FIG. 7 shows the different flight phases of the projectile 1 according to this variant of the invention.
After firing, and at an instant Ii (ie here about 5 km from the weapon), the control module 12 is moved back to open the air inlet 11 and switch on the ramjet.
At the instant I 2 (ie here approximately 10 km from the weapon), the control module 12 is a little further back to further open the air inlet 11, which improves the operation of the ramjet engine. a higher altitude (here 10 km).
At the instant I 3 (ie here approximately 15 km from the weapon), the control module 12 is further moved back to open the air inlet 11 to its maximum opening, which improves the operation of the ramjet at a even higher altitude (here 15 km).
When the projectile 1 is at its peak A, the electric motor 27 returns the control module 12 to its front position in which it closes the air inlet 11 which turns off the ramjet. At the same time the duck control surfaces 15 are deployed and the piloted phase G begins.
According to a particular embodiment, it will be possible in the final phase Af, to move back again the control module 12 so as to reopen the air inlet 11 and relight the propulsion unit 7 of the ramjet.
This command will intervene when the projectile 1 is oriented in the direction of its target T and it will therefore no longer be necessary to correct its trajectory. The control surfaces 15 may during this movement be embedded on the body 2 around the air inlet 11, which does not present any more disadvantages, the guidance having become useless. The control surfaces could alternatively fold forward in the module according to the design of their kinematics.
Le vol du projectile repasse en régime supersonique et la vitesse à l'impact sur la cible est de l'ordre de Mach 2.This final acceleration of the projectile 1 lasting approximately seconds, is not essential but it makes it possible to increase the kinetic energy of the projectile 1 at the end of the trajectory and also increases the discretion of the attack. The flight of the projectile returns to supersonic regime and the speed at impact on the target is of the order of Mach 2.
