Description
The present invention is in the field of the protection of aircraft, particularly aircraft carrying passengers, against the penetration of an external fire. More particularly, it relates to an aircraft with protection capacity against the penetration of an external fire, and a method for increasing the protection capacity of an aircraft against the penetration of an external fire. The protection of aircraft, such as airplanes, helicopters, rockets, etc., and more particularly aircraft carrying passengers, against the penetration, into the cell receiving said passengers, of a fire of origin external to the aircraft, is of great importance. In particular, since the crash of a B737 in Manchester in 1985, when the start of a fire outside the structure gave rise to a disaster causing the death of ten people, the authorities, European and American governments have decided to impose the equipment of aircraft, and more particularly fuselages of aircraft carrying passengers, means of protection against the penetration of an external fire. The objective is to delay this penetration long enough for passengers to evacuate the aircraft before it occurs. The protection of aircraft against the penetration of an external fire is traditionally provided by fire-resistant thermal / acoustic insulation systems and limiting thermal flows, such as blankets, mattresses or films, installed in the lower part of the fuselage. The implementation of these insulation systems is accompanied by the reinforcement of the structural elements, such as panels, stiffeners, etc., intended to keep them in place in case of external fire following a crash. This solution, however, has the major disadvantage of significantly increasing the mass of the aircraft. In addition, it requires many operations and time of implementation and high maintenance. The present invention aims to remedy the drawbacks of the thermal / acoustic insulation systems for delaying the penetration of an external fire into the body of an aircraft proposed by the prior art, especially those mentioned above, by proposing a system which makes it possible to effectively protect the body of the aircraft against the penetration of an external fire, by increasing the capacity of the aircraft to resist against the penetration of an external fire, without its implementation entailing a significant increase in the mass of the aircraft. A further object of the invention is that the installation of this system in the aircraft requires few specific operations, and is easy and quick to achieve. For this purpose, it is proposed by the present invention to protect a body of the aircraft, that is to say the cell receiving the load transported, in most cases the fuselage, by a coating with flame retardant function deposited on its outer surface. The outer surface is here defined as the surface facing the environment outside the aircraft. More particularly, it is proposed according to the present invention an aircraft, with resistance capacity against the penetration of an external fire, wherein at least a portion of the outer surface of a body of said aircraft, receiving a load to be transported, in particular passengers, is coated with a multilayer paint system which comprises at least one layer of a material with intumescent properties. Intumescent paints are known per se, and are characterized by expansion in the form of foam when exposed to a temperature rise above a certain value, typically between 180 and 300 ° C. The foam thus formed has thermal insulation properties and resistance to the propagation of combustion, the present invention advantageously advantageously to delay the penetration of fire whose source is outside the aircraft, in the body of the latter. In particular, it has been observed by the present inventors that the protection time thus obtained is greater than the four-minute value imposed by the regulations, which makes it possible to evacuate all the passengers present inside the body of an airplane. before an external fire enters and does not affect the durability of the structure. This result is quite advantageous in the absence of traditional thermal / acoustic insulation systems proposed by the prior art. The mass gain obtained by the present invention, compared to these traditional systems, is also particularly high, and can for example be evaluated at about 120 kg for an A380 type airplane.
According to the invention, the layer of paint with intumescent properties is advantageously integrated within the multilayer paint system conventionally covering the outer surface of the body of the aircraft, in particular for its protection against corrosion and its decoration. The application of this layer of a material with intumescent properties thus requires few specific operations, which can be integrated into a more general method of applying conventional paint layers on the outer surface of the body of the aircraft . As a result, compared to the traditional systems proposed by the prior art for resistance to the penetration of an external fire, a cycle gain by reducing the number and time required for assembly and control operations, as well as greater ease of maintenance. The other layers of the multilayer paint system according to the invention are conventional in themselves, and may in particular consist, in the case of an aluminum aircraft structure, in the following succession of layers, listed starting from the surface exterior of the body of the aircraft outward: basic primary; primary corrosion inhibitor without chromates; and decorative layers, optionally comprising an intermediate layer (called "intermediate coating"), and a base layer (called "base coat") covered with a layer of varnish ("clear coat") resistant to ultra-radiation -violets. The decorative layers, the outermost of this paint scheme, can in particular be removed by chemical etching, when the system comprises an intermediate layer, or mechanical stripping, to change the decoration of the aircraft. According to particular embodiments, the invention furthermore meets the following characteristics, implemented separately or in each of their technically operating combinations. At least some of its features aim to achieve a further object of the invention, namely that the presence of the layer of a material with intumescent properties in the multilayer paint system does not detract from the aesthetics of the external decorations formed by this system on the aircraft. In particular, the invention aims to ensure that the upper face of the multilayer paint system, opposite to the lower face facing the body of the aircraft, is as smooth and shiny as in the absence of the layer of a material with intumescent properties according to the invention. More generally, the invention aims that the proposed multilayer paint system is compatible with the standard requirements for decoration of the outer surface of aircraft. In particular embodiments of the invention, the material with intumescent properties is essentially free of intumescent mineral charges. The term "essentially free" is understood here to mean that the material contains no intumescent mineral charge, such as for example graphite, or only in the form of traces. The materials with intumescent properties particularly recommended by the present invention are thus of the type based on organic intumescent fillers, for example of the organophosphorus compound type. Such a characteristic advantageously confers on the layer with intumescent properties a smooth and shiny surface. Preferably, the material with intumescent properties is obtained from a composition comprising at least the following intumescent agents, conventional in themselves: an expansion agent, otherwise known as a blowing agent, that is to say say a compound capable of releasing, under the action of heat, a large amount of non-flammable and non-hazardous gases, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc., causing the expansion of the material. By way of example of such expansion agents, there may be mentioned nitrogen compounds such as urea, melamine or its derivatives, melamine cyanurate, melamine phosphate, melamine diphosphate, melamine pyrophosphate, etc., amine salts, etc., or a mixture thereof. This agent or this mixture of blowing agents may for example be present at a concentration of 5 to 35% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition; a carbon source compound, ensuring the formation of a carbon foam under heat exposure, for example a polyhydroxy organic compound chosen especially from carbohydrates, sugars, starches, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol , trimethylolpropane, mono- or polypentaerythritols, ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers, etc., or a mixture thereof. The content of the composition of such carbon source compound (s) may for example be between 1 and 35% by weight of the total weight of the composition; an acid source compound, also designated by the term "foaming agent", capable of releasing, when it is subjected to an increase in temperature, an acid, such as phosphoric acid, capable of reacting with the hydroxyl functions of the carbon source agent. Examples of such compounds are organophosphorus compounds such as phosphates, for example ammonium polyphosphate, ammonium phosphate, potassium polyphosphate or melamine phosphate, organophosphites, organophosphates, alkylphosphinic acids, acids aminoalkylphosphinic acids, carboxyalkylphosphonic acids, etc., or a mixture thereof. The content of the composition (s) agent (s) acid source may for example be between 10 and 85% by weight of the total weight of the composition; a film-forming binder, which may or may not be associated with an organic solvent, in particular a resin of the epoxy-amine or polyurethane type. After drying, the material with intumescent properties according to the invention thus preferably comprises a polymer matrix of the epoxy-amine or polyurethane type. Polymeric matrices of the epoxy-amine type are more particularly preferred in the context of the invention, since they are better compatible with the materials conventionally used in the composition of conventional paint systems applied to the outer surface of aircraft. The content of film-forming binder in the composition may especially be between 1 and 50% by weight. Preferably, the intumescent material is chosen to be able to release large amounts of gas, and have a relatively low expansion capacity, for example about ten times the initial thickness of the layer. An expansion capacity of at least eight times the initial thickness of the layer is, however, advantageous in terms of retardation efficiency of the penetration of fire.
We do not prejudge here mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of intumescence. It is however generally accepted that the principle of intumescent paints implements different chemical chain reactions, comprising successively, under the action of heat: a softening of the polymer matrix, when the ambient temperature exceeds the glass transition temperature of the polymer ; the synthesis of an organic acid, for example phosphoric acid, by decomposition of the acid source compound; a carbonization reaction, by reaction between the acid thus generated and the carbon source compound, to form water and intermediate compounds, such as phosphate esters, which decompose to lead to the formation of a structure carbonaceous, commonly called "char"; gas formation by decomposition of the blowing agent; the formation of a foam by trapping in the tank of these gases and water vapor; and the solidification of this foam by creating a three-dimensional network chemically bridged by ester-type pyrolysis or aromatization reaction. The foam thus formed is adapted to absorb the heat to which it is subjected to maintain the temperature of the outer surface of the body of the aircraft to a sufficiently low value, and it has sufficient fire resistance properties, to maintain the structural integrity of the aircraft body exposed to external fire for a time greater than five minutes. In particular embodiments of the invention, the layer of a material with intumescent properties has a thickness of between 200 and 240 μm. Such a characteristic advantageously confers the best compromise between the weight of the paint system, the lowest possible, and the performance of retarding the penetration of an external fire, the highest possible, and in particular that the durability and the resistance to the effects. lightning. According to an advantageous characteristic of the invention, the layer of a material with intumescent properties preferably has on the surface an arithmetical roughness Ra, expressing the mean of the absolute values of the differences between the profile of the surface and a mean line of this profile, which is less than 0.8 μm, and / or a total roughness Rt, corresponding to the sum of the maximum peak and the maximum hollow observed over the analyzed length, which is less than 6.5 μm. Such roughness characteristics notably ensure a compatibility of the intumescent layer with the requirements laid down for the vast majority of commercial airliners, as regards the paint systems used for exterior decoration. In particular particularly advantageous embodiments of the invention, the layer of a material with intumescent properties is stable at temperatures below 160 ° C., that is to say in particular that its intumescent function is not triggered by below this temperature. In addition, it is chosen so that even prolonged exposure to a temperature of about 150 ° C causes neither its cracking, its peeling, nor its damage, including in a situation of curvature. In variants of the invention, the layer of a material with intumescent properties is distinct from the other layers forming part of the paint system according to the invention. In such particular embodiments of the invention, the thickness of the intumescent layer is then preferably between 200 and 230 μm, for example about 200 μm. This layer may in particular be interposed in this paint system between a base primer layer and a corrosion-inhibiting primer layer, conventional in themselves, or alternatively be interposed between a corrosion-inhibiting primer layer and coatings layers. decoration, also classic in themselves. In other embodiments of the invention, the material with intumescent properties is integrated in a layer of corrosion-inhibiting primer of the paint system, so that the layer with intumescent function and the layer with corrosion protection function are combined. and advantageously form one and the same multifunctional layer. This is achieved by integrating the mixture of suitable intumescent agents into a composition conventionally used for formation of the anticorrosion primer layer on the outer surface of the aircraft. In such variants of the invention, different formulations of the corrosion inhibiting primer forming the layer can be implemented. For example, in addition to conventional components such as talcs, carbon black, additives, volatile organic compounds, etc., strontium chromate corrosion inhibitors can be used in combination with epoxy-amine resins. reticulated, very flexible. The intumescent function of the layer thus ensuring both the barrier functions to the penetration of fire and inhibition of corrosion, can be obtained by modifying the epoxy-amine resin to increase the flexibility of the material by modifying the number of functional groups available on the main hydrocarbon chain, this modification being combined with the addition of the intumescent organic agents as described above, and with a reduction of the particle size of the mineral fillers conventionally used for the formation of the primary inhibitor corrosion. Preferably, when the material with intumescent properties is integrated in a corrosion inhibiting primer layer, the thickness of the layer thus formed is between 220 and 240 μm. In particular embodiments of the invention, it is furthermore particularly advantageous for the multilayer paint system to be applied to substantially the entire outer surface of the body of the aircraft, in particular for the sake of convenience. industrial implementation. In particular embodiments of the invention, the body of the aircraft coated, according to the invention, with a system of multilayer paints on at least a portion, and where appropriate substantially all, of its outer surface , is a fuselage of the aircraft. In such embodiments, preferably, at least the outer surface of the part of the fuselage of the aircraft below a median line of the aircraft, that is to say the underside of the aircraft, is substantially entirely coated with the multilayer paint system according to the invention. By substantially all of this is meant the fact that most of this surface of the underside of the aircraft is coated with this paint system. This results in optimum protection of the interior of the body of the aircraft vis-à-vis outdoor lights originating from the engines of the aircraft. In the embodiments in which the material with intumescent properties is integrated in a layer of corrosion inhibiting primer of the multilayer paint system, the latter preferably preferably covers substantially the entire outer surface of the fuselage of the aircraft; ie both the intrados and the extrados, part of the fuselage of the aircraft higher than the median line of the aircraft. According to another aspect, the present invention relates to a method for protecting an aircraft against the penetration of an external fire into a body of said aircraft, according to which a system is applied to at least a portion of the outer surface of the body. multilayer paint comprising at least one layer of a material with intumescent properties, corresponding to one or more of the above characteristics. This application is preferably performed on at least the outer surface of the underside of the fuselage of the aircraft, where appropriate on substantially the entirety of the outer surface of this fuselage.
The application of each of the layers of the multilayer paint system may be carried out by conventional techniques in themselves, for example of the spray or inkjet type, by roller, etc., and be followed by a step of drying. A fine control of the process by automated application, for example by means of a robot, is however preferred in order to systematically guarantee the minimum thickness desired for the layer with intumescent properties. The invention will now be more specifically described in the context of particular embodiments, which are in no way limiting, shown in Figures 1 to 3, in which: - Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a system multilayer paint according to a particular embodiment of the invention, applied to the outer surface of the skin of an aircraft fuselage; FIG. 2 represents a cross-sectional view of a multilayer paint system according to a different embodiment of the invention, applied to the outer surface of the skin of an aircraft fuselage; and FIG. 3 schematically illustrates an aircraft covered on a portion of the outer surface of its fuselage with a multilayer paint system according to one embodiment of the invention.
An example of a multilayer paint system according to the invention is shown schematically in FIG. 1. In this FIG. 1, the relative thicknesses of the various layers of this paint system have been chosen as an example, and to clearly show each of these layers, and these relative thicknesses should not be considered as limiting or even representative of a real paint system. For reasons of ease of description, in this example, the body of the aircraft will be considered to be the aluminum fuselage 11 of an aircraft.
On the outer surface 12 of this fuselage 11, that is to say the surface facing the external environment of the aircraft, is applied a multilayer paint system 20. This paint system 20 comprises a plurality of layers conventional in themselves for the protection of the aircraft against corrosion and its exterior decoration. It comprises in particular arranged, one above the other on the outer surface 12 of the fuselage 11: - a base primer layer 21, for example with a thickness of between 5 and 25 μm. Such a layer may for example be formed from a composition comprising an epoxy-amine resin and strontium chromates. The assembly is initially associated, before drying, with a solvent phase which can vary from simple volatile organic compounds to water-based systems; a chromate-free corrosion inhibitor primer layer 22, for example with a thickness of between 15 and 25 μm. The chemical composition of this layer is for example based on a bi-component of epoxy-amine resins combined with organic corrosion inhibitors; and a set of so-called decoration layers 23, comprising for example: an intermediate layer 24, disposed above the corrosion inhibitor primer layer 22, having for example a thickness of between 6 and 12 μm. The chemical composition of this layer is based on a polyamide mono-component; a base layer 25, for example having a thickness of between 30 and 90 μm, depending on the color and the hiding power of the pigments to be applied. This layer is for example formed based on tri-component polyurethane resins; and, as an upper layer, at least one layer of varnish 26, for example having a thickness of between 30 and 60 μm. This layer may for example be formed based on polyurethane resins with a high number of functional groups, ensuring a high degree of crosslinking. The multilayer paint system 20 also advantageously comprises a layer 27 of a material with intumescent properties, which is interposed between the base primer layer 21 and the corrosion inhibitor primer layer 22. The initial thickness of this layer intumescent function 27 can be between 200 and 230 i.tm. It is for example about 200 i.tm. The initial thickness of the entire multilayer paint system thus formed is for example between 530 and 560 μm. The intumescent function layer 27 also has a surface roughness such that its arithmetic roughness Ra is less than 0.8 μm and its total roughness Rt is less than 6.5 μm. The material with intumescent properties which constitutes it is of the type with organic functional charges, in a polymer matrix, for example an epoxy-amine type polymer matrix. The application of these different layers on the outer surface 12 of the fuselage 11 of the aircraft can be carried out by any conventional technique in itself, for example by inkjet, the fuselage having been previously subjected to operations conventional surface preparation required for this purpose. An alternative multilayer paint system according to the invention is shown in FIG. 2. In this variant, the multilayer paint system 30 comprises all the layers described above with reference to FIG. outer surface 12 of the fuselage 11 of the aircraft, but in a different order. The layer 27 of material with intumescent properties is indeed interposed between the corrosion inhibiting primer layer 22 and the set of decorative layers 23. As illustrated in FIG. 3, in particular embodiments of the invention, the multilayer paint system according to the invention, that is to say including a layer of a material with intumescent properties, is preferably applied at least on the outer surface of the zone 14 of the fuselage 11 of the aircraft 10 disposed below a median line 13 of the aircraft. This lower zone, indicated in gray in the figure, corresponds to what is commonly called the underside of the aircraft.
On the other parts of the outer surface of the fuselage 11 is applied a traditional multilayer paint system, that is to say having no layer with intumescent properties. When this aircraft 10 is exposed to a fire of external origin, generally emanating from its engines after a crash, the external temperature rise caused by this fire triggers the intumescent function of the paint system. More particularly, the layer 27 of the material with intumescent properties is expanded and forms a thermally insulating foam, which delays the propagation of combustion and isolates the inside of the fuselage from fire 11. Resistance to the penetration of external fire into the fuselage It is advantageously operating for more than 5 minutes, which leaves time to evacuate the passengers from the fuselage 11 of the aircraft. This result is advantageously obtained by penalizing little the mass of the aircraft, and without penalizing external aesthetic appearance.
When the material with intumescent properties is integrated with the corrosion inhibiting primer layer of the paint system, it may be preferred to coat the entire outer surface of the fuselage of the aircraft, i.e. intrados than the extrados, of the paint system according to the invention.
