Description
AND PLANT FOR TREATING FLUID CONTAINING ORGANIC, NATURAL OR SYNTHETIC MATERIALS, ESPECIALLY IN A DRINKING WATER LINE. The invention relates to a fluid treatment process containing organic substances, natural or synthetic, by passing the fluid through a bed of activated carbon, in an upward flow. The invention relates more particularly to a treatment of water in a drinking water system, for the reduction of organic matter. This reduction of organic matter (OM) is mainly achieved by coagulation and adsorption on activated carbon (CA). The implementation of activated carbon to complete the reduction of organic matter and / or to capture pesticides has been proposed for several decades, in particular on granular activated carbon filter (GAC) or by addition of activated carbon powder ( CAP). The structures for the implementation of activated carbon are generally called activated carbon reactors, and are generally added downstream of a first flocculation-settling step.
Activated carbon is used to retain organic micropollutants, or more generally organic, natural or artificial materials. Because of its high cost, activated carbon is generally used in "refining", that is to say in one or more stages at the end of the treatment process, whereas the content of natural organic matter has been substantially reduced by a less expensive process, such as coagulation-flocculation followed by a floc separation step. In this case, the activated carbon is used in the form of granular activated carbon filtration (FCAG). Activated carbon has also been used in the form of powdered activated carbon (CAP) in flocculation-settling since its retention was easily possible at this stage, the powdered activated carbon being fixed by the floc. This stage was naturally at the top of the treatment chain. Relatively newer reactors are expanding in CAG beds. These various known reactors have drawbacks.
.The conventional granular activated carbon filter corresponds to a reactor used in refining, downflow to ensure very low turbidity. Such reactors retain the suspended solids (MES) and require consequent ancillary facilities for the backwash necessarily upflow, so in the opposite direction of the filtration flow. .
An upwelling activated carbon powder reactor (CAP) improves the adsorption, but with the disadvantage that the thin material, constituted by the CAP, is driven by water. It must then be separated from the water, which complicates the treatment.
The object of the invention is, above all, to provide a process which makes it possible to optimize the reduction of organic matter in an upflow activated carbon reactor and which makes it possible to reduce investment and operating costs. According to the invention, a method for treating fluid, in particular liquid, in particular water, containing natural or synthetic organic materials, by passing an upward flow of fluid through a bed of activated carbon, is characterized in that that: - the activated carbon is in the form of grains, - at least one filtration / adsorption phase is provided during which the fluid velocity is sufficiently low not to cause significant expansion of the activated carbon bed which ensures both filtration and adsorption of the materials contained in the fluid, - and at least one expansion phase is provided, during which the fluid flows at a speed sufficiently high to cause a significant expansion of the activated carbon bed which then undergoes a washing by the fluid. The effective size of the activated carbon grains is generally between 0.3 and 1.5 mm, preferably between 0.6 and 1.2 mm. The speed of circulation of the fluid during the filtration / adsorption phase is advantageously between 10 and 20 m / h, depending on the size of the grains of the active carbon retained, preferably between 12 and 15 m / h. The flow velocity of the fluid, during the washing phase, is preferably between 15 and 40 m / h, depending on the grain size of the active carbon retained. The appreciable expansion of the activated carbon bed, during the washing phase, is at least 15% of the height of the bed at rest whereas, during the filtration / adsorption phase, the possible increase in the height of the bed does not exceed 10% of the height at rest. Advantageously, the fluid, in particular the liquid, is circulated by a variable speed pump, and the speed of this pump is increased during the washing phase. As a variant, the flow of liquid, in particular water, is ensured by gravity from a liquid column whose height is greater than that of the liquid in the reactor containing the activated carbon bed, the admission of the liquid into the bottom of the reactor being provided at low flow rate for the filtration / adsorption phase, and at a higher flow rate for the washing phase, with flushing effect. Partial extraction of activated carbon can be carried out during the washing phase. A progressive charge of activated carbon is advantageously carried out, while being adapted to the needs in abatement of the pollutant contents. Downstream of the activated carbon treatment, a filtration step can be provided, in particular by granular or membrane filtration, preferably combined in the same unit. According to the process of the invention: the apparatus or reactor provides filtration or pre-filtration, by stopping suspended matter entering the reactor, hence reducing the need for downstream filtration, according to the quality desired by the user; the reactor requires only the inlet fluid, generally the water to be treated, for the periodic washing or for the extraction of the granular activated carbon, hence a simplified installation; - The input fluid is subjected to pulsations that correspond to changes in the fluid flow rate. The invention also relates to an installation for implementing the fluid treatment method defined above, this installation comprising a reactor in which is disposed a bed of activated carbon with, at the bottom of the reactor, a fluid inlet, in particular liquid, to be treated, and means for evacuating the treated fluid in the upper part of the reactor, this installation being characterized in that the active carbon is in grains, and the installation comprises a means for circulating the fluid, according to ascending flow, at least two speeds, one of which is insufficient to cause a significant expansion of the bed, and the other is sufficiently strong to cause a significant expansion of the bed. By sensible expansion is meant an expansion such that the height of the bed increases by at least 15% of the height at rest. The effective size of the activated carbon grains is generally between 0.3 and 1.5 mm, preferably between 0.6 and 1.2 mm. Advantageously, the means for circulating the fluid, in particular the liquid, is a pump. variable speed. According to a variant, in the case of a particular liquid of water, the circulation means comprises a liquid column of height greater than that of the liquid in the reactor with a low flow rate feed for the filtration phase. adsorption, and a higher rate feed for the wash phase to create a hunting effect; a valve may be provided to commission the high flow line. A pipe is advantageously provided on the reactor wall and opens into the height of the activated carbon bed at rest, so that a portion of the activated carbon from the bed can be evacuated during the washing phase.
The invention consists, apart from the arrangements set out above, in a certain number of other arrangements which will be more explicitly discussed below with regard to embodiments described with reference to the accompanying drawings, but which are not in no way limiting. In these drawings: 1 is a schematic vertical section of an installation implementing the method of the invention, in the filtration / adsorption phase. Fig. 2 represents, similarly to FIG. 1, the installation in the washing phase, and FIG. 3 shows, similarly to FIG. 1, an alternative embodiment.
En variante, le lit 2 pourrait être supporté par une plaque perforée prévue en fond du réacteur 1.Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, we can see a facility for the treatment of water in a drinking water system, this installation comprising a reactor 1, whose height can be several meters, in particular of the order of 3 or 4 m . In the lower part of this reactor is disposed a bed 2 of granular activated carbon whose effective size is between 0.3 and 1.5 mm, preferably between 0.6 and 1.2 mm. The bed 2 can be obtained by superimposing layers of activated carbon 2a, 2b, 2c corresponding to progressive fills made by pouring from the open top of the reactor 1. The thickness of each layer of activated carbon can be between 10 cm and 50 cm when spilled. The reactor is provided, on its upper open part, with a protective blanket 1a which is removable and not leakproof, allowing air to pass through. The bed 2 is placed on a support layer 3, in particular gravel. Alternatively, the bed 2 could be supported by a perforated plate provided at the bottom of the reactor 1.
An input means 4 for the water to be treated is provided in the lower part of the reactor and is constituted in particular by a distribution ramp, extending in the support layer 3. An evacuation means 5, consisting of a pipe provided with a valve 6 is provided in the upper part of the reactor 1. The installation comprises means M for circulating the water along at least two speeds, one of which is insufficient to cause substantial expansion of the bed 2, that is to say, a significant increase in the height H1 of the bed at rest, and the other is sufficiently strong to cause a significant expansion of the bed 2 whose height is increased in H 2 as shown in FIG. 2. According to the embodiment of FIG. 1 and 2, the means M is constituted by a variable speed pump 7. The pump 7 is designed to ensure, at low speed, a circulation of the water in the bed 2 at a speed of 10 to 20 m / h (meter / hour) depending on the size of the granular activated carbon selected, and preferably between 12 and m / h. For such a speed of circulation, the bed 2 does not undergo expansion or at least substantial expansion so that it provides a filtration treatment and adsorption treatment. If the bed 2 was expanded significantly, the filtration treatment would not be assured. This treatment phase corresponds to a filtration / adsorption phase. The bed 2 retains, by filtration, materials that dirty the grains of activated carbon so that a washing of the grains of the bed 2 must be carried out periodically. This washing is performed by increasing the speed of the pump 7 so that the speed of circulation of the liquid in the bed 2 increases and make the bed expand. The circulation speed of the water is advantageously between 15 and 40 m / h for this washing operation. The washing water is discharged through a pipe 8 provided with a valve 9 also provided in the upper part of the reactor 1.
During the expansion phase, illustrated in FIG. 2, an evacuation of a portion of the active carbon bed can be provided by means of a pipe 10 provided on the wall of the reactor 1 and opening into the height of the bed 2 at rest. The pipe 10 is provided with a valve 11 whose opening, during the expansion phase of the bed, allows to evacuate to a tray B a certain amount of activated carbon to ensure reactivation. A spill (not shown) of a substantially equivalent amount of regenerated or new activated charcoal is effected by the open top end of the reactor 1 for periodic replacement of the activated charcoal. In this way, progressive filling of the bed 2 is carried out in successive layers. The active carbon content of the water in the zone of the bed 2, including during the expansion, is at least 350 g / l. The operation of the installation for the implementation of the method of the invention is as follows. During the filtration / adsorption phase, the pump 7 rotates at a relatively low speed so that the upwardly rising water velocity in the reactor 1 does not cause substantial expansion or expansion of the bed 2. treated water is discharged through line 5, valve 6 being open. The valves 9 and 11 are closed. The washing phase, illustrated in FIG. 2, is obtained by increasing the speed of the pump 7 so that the speed of circulation of the water in the reactor 1 causes the expansion of the bed 2 as illustrated. The valve 6 is closed while the valve 9 for discharging the wash water through line 8 is open. The installation by filtering, or pre-filtering, stops the suspended solids present in the water, which limits the possible needs of filtration downstream. The water to be treated is the fluid for the periodic washing, which simplifies the installation. Fig. 3 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the installation according to which the flow of water to be treated is provided by gravity from a water column 12 whose height is greater by a distance E than the maximum height of the water in the reactor 1. The water to be treated is admitted, via a pipe 12a, in the upper part of column 12 above the level of the water in this column. The lower part of the column is connected to the ramp 4 via a valve 13 installed on a pipe 14 with a large section and high flow. A low section and low flow line 15 connects the lower part of the column 12 to a zone of the ramp 4, downstream of the valve 13. The other elements of the reactor of FIG. 3 are similar or identical to the elements already described with reference to the preceding figures and are designated by the same numerical references without their description being repeated. For the filtration / adsorption phase, the valve 13 is closed and the supply of water to be treated is carried out by the pipe 15 at a relatively low flow rate, so that the rate of flow of the upflow in the reactor 1 is low. and does not cause an expansion of bed 2.
For the washing phase, the opening of the valve 13 is controlled. A rapid flow, producing a flushing phenomenon, is created with a high speed of the rising water flow in the expanding bed 2, similar to the representation of FIG. 2. The valve 13 is all-or-nothing type. Alternatively, one could provide an adjustable opening valve that would remove the pipe 15; the valve would be set at a low flow rate during the filtration / adsorption phase, and at a high flow rate during the wash phase. A filtration step, in particular granular or membrane filtration, may be provided downstream of the activated carbon treatment reactor 1. In the case of downstream granular filtration, the filtration basin can be combined with the reactor 1 in the same unit as follows: the granular filtration basin is attached to a vertical wall of the reactor 1 with a common partition wall. above which the treated water in the reactor 1 flows into the granular filtration cell where the flow is downward with outlet at the bottom. The treatment unit thus formed is of the biflux type. The method of the invention has been tested on a pilot unit which has operated on coagulated-decanted water in a water treatment plant, in the conventional processing sector achievements in France, on water rich in materials organic. The tests have shown that: - the turbidity reduction, which corresponds to the filtration function, has reached 70%, - the total organic carbon (TOC) reduction corresponding to the adsorption function has reached 70%, for a height active charcoal bed 2 between 0.1 and 0.5 m, when the bed is at rest and unexpanded, and for a flow rate of water in the reactor in an upward flow of 11 to 16 m / h . The invention is applicable to the production of water intended for human consumption, or to the production of process water, as well as to the treatment of wastewater requiring a significant reduction in organic matter including micropollutants, for which only a few adsorbents are effective, mainly activated carbon.
