Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a card intended to be printed by a printer. It also relates to a method of manufacturing this card. Cards intended to be printed by a printer are known. These cards are in ISO format (credit card format), have a standard thickness of 0.25, 0.5 or 0.76 and have sufficient rigidity to be driven by printer rolls. These cards are also provided for an image or text is printed on at least one of their faces when they undergo a processing implemented by the printer. It is also known that these cards are obtained either by injection or by assembling several layers of material (lamination in English). Injection methods include forming a mold and injecting a material into the mold. Acrylnitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is usually the material used. These methods are mainly used for smart cards because the cavity 15 provided for receiving the chip is then formed in the mold used instead of being machined as is the case for the cards obtained by a lamination process and this for reduce the cost of machining cards. However, the cost price of a card obtained by injection is greater than that of a card obtained by a lamination process even with the use of robots and electric presses. The lamination processes consist of joining sheets by extrusion of polyvinyl chloride, better known as PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride). Generally, four leaves are formed: two thick, white leaves that are assembled to form the heart of the map and two thinner, transparent leaves that make up the outer layers of the heart. Once the four sheets are laminated together, this assembly is cut to obtain ISO format plastic cards and the scrap (the skeleton), which represents 15 to 25% of the surface of the assembly, are jetties. To increase the life of the cards once printed, these cards can be further processed by depositing a protective layer by lamination. This protective layer is PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET). Cards thus treated will then consist of PVC layers and a layer of PET.
Although plastic cards formed by a lamination process are produced at reduced costs compared to the cards produced by injection, the lamination stages consume a lot of energy. Cards intended to be printed by a printer thus contain mainly PVC. The logistics of distributing such personalized cards for each user does not ensure end-of-life collection and ensure the recycling of these cards which are then incinerated. It is suspected that PVC contributes to acid rain and cancer because burning polyvinyl chloride in particular releases hydrochloric acid. The combustion of PVC also generates dioxins and furans in varying amounts depending on the combustion conditions. Although household waste incineration plants are equipped with acid filters because of the presence of chlorides in many wastes, it is necessary to reduce these emissions. The problem solved by the invention is to minimize the overall cost of the cards intended to be printed by a printer, that is to say, to minimize both the financial cost of manufacturing these cards but also the impact on the printer. the environment of these cards either during their manufacture or once these cards are no longer used. To this end, the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a printed card which is characterized in that it comprises the following steps: - extrusion of a sheet of a material of a given thickness, and - Cutting the sheet to a predefined format of cards. The transformation of the material into a card is done in a single step by extrusion of a single sheet corresponding to the desired thickness of the final card. Such a transformation therefore makes it possible to eliminate the lamination steps (assembly of layers) that exist for the manufacture of PVC cards and therefore to reduce the energy required for the manufacture of the cards. According to one embodiment, the material is polyethylene terephthalate and according to an alternative, polyester.
The use of PET or polyester (PS) instead of PVC reduces the impact on the environment because PET (or PS) can be recycled using, for example, the existing recovery and recycling channel of PET bottle. According to one embodiment of the method, the material comprises at least partially recycled material.
According to one embodiment of the method, the skeleton from a previous cut of a sheet is recycled and reintegrated into the next production. This embodiment makes it possible to minimize card manufacturing waste and thus minimizes the impact on the environment of the manufacture of these cards. In practice, the map is cut in ISO format and the skeleton has been optimized to be less than 15% of the sheet area. This skeleton is then crushed and recycled 100% from the next card manufacturing. According to one embodiment of the method, a white dye is added to the material.
The white dye makes it possible to counterbalance the bluish effect of the material coming from the collection of the PET (transparent bottle of water ....) or the PS and also to ensure an opacity of the card. Preferably, the dye is provided to favor the neutrality of the color of the card at the expense of brightness (slightly gray) so as to respect the color of printing on the card.
According to one embodiment of the method, the dye is of the masterbach type. According to one embodiment of the method, a surface treatment is applied to the sheet or at least one card cut from this sheet. Advantageously, this treatment is a corona treatment which makes it possible to increase the surface energy of the sheet (or a card) to improve its printing. The manufacturing process which converts recycled PET into a single sheet and which reuses 100% of the skeleton of a previous sheet cut makes it possible to halve the impact on the environment of the manufacture of the cards intended to be printed by a printer (analysis of the eleven indicators used for the analysis of the cycle of life). The present invention also relates to a card intended to be printed by a printer which is characterized in that it is formed of a single layer of material. According to one embodiment, the material is polyethylene terephthalate or polyester. According to one embodiment, the material has been bleached and opacified by adding a white dye. According to one embodiment, the card has undergone a surface treatment.
The characteristics of the invention mentioned above, as well as others, will appear more clearly on reading the following description of an exemplary embodiment, said description being made in relation to the single drawing attached. Fig. unique represents a method of manufacturing a card of a given thickness intended to be printed by a printer. The method comprises a step of obtaining by extrusion of a sheet of the given thickness of material, and a step of cutting the sheet to a predefined format of cards. According to one embodiment, the material is polyethylene terephthalate or polyester. According to one embodiment, the material comprises at least partially recycled material (PET or PS) preferably derived from the skeleton of a previous cut of a sheet. In practice, the skeleton is crushed and reused 100% in a next execution of the manufacturing process. According to one embodiment, a white dye is added to the material. The dye used is preferably of the Masterbatch type which can be found at the Elian dye manufacturer, for example. This dye is often based on PET to which one or more components are added for the white coloring.
25 According to one embodiment, a surface treatment is applied to the sheet or at least one card cut from this sheet. Advantageously, this treatment is a corona treatment that increases the surface energy of the sheet (or card) to improve its printing. 25
