Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the disinfection of water, and in particular for the control of the biofilm capable of developing in water circuits. water.
BACKGROUND ART Water systems such as cooling water circuits are generally subjected to a disinfection treatment for the removal of microorganisms. A conventional disinfection treatment involves injecting chlorinated or brominated products into the water. However, such treatments are pollution generators and have little or no activity against the microorganisms living in the biofilms of the circuits. A biofilm is a set of organic polymers and micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, algae or protozoa), adhering to each other and to a surface.
As an alternative to chlorinated or brominated products, it is known to use other compounds, especially ozone or hydrogen peroxide. In particular, hydrogen peroxide is used as an oxidizing substance capable of attacking the cell wall. In general, hydrogen peroxide is used with an activator, for example silver ions or peracetic acid. The effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide on biofilms is moderate, and the use of activators generates additional pollution. It is also known to irradiate water with ultraviolet radiation, which has a germicidal effect on circulating microorganisms. However, this treatment has no impact on microorganisms that are not directly exposed to radiation, and therefore no effect on circuit biofilms. A: A31800 \ 31893 ATOR \ 31893-101103-Text depot.doc - 16 November 2010 However, the presence of a large reservoir of undesirable microorganisms in biofilms (for example legionellae) can be at the origin of sanitary accidents, parts of biofilm being capable of detaching and suddenly release in the circulating water a large quantity of microorganisms. The only treatments available to date against the biofilm consist in injecting dispersant into the water so as to break up the biofilm and then destroy the microorganisms thus released into the water.
There is therefore a real need to provide an improved water disinfection process, in particular to control the growth of biofilms or reduce biofilms, while limiting toxic releases to the environment.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention firstly relates to a method for disinfecting water comprising: - the injection into water of hydrogen peroxide; and - the irradiation of water with ultraviolet radiation.

According to one embodiment, the water circuit is a cooling water circuit. According to one embodiment, the water disinfection system is adapted to directly treat the entire water flow of the circuit or is disposed in a bypass of the water circuit provided with a recirculation pump.
The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of the state of the art. It provides more particularly an improved water disinfection process, which allows in particular to control the growth of biofilms or reduce biofilms. This is accomplished through a coupling between the use of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation. A synergistic effect is observed between these two modes of disinfection. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is suggested that the application of ultraviolet rays in the presence of hydrogen peroxide generates highly reactive free radicals OH °, which destroy the organic nutrients of microorganisms and thus limit the development of biofilm. According to some particular embodiments, the invention also has one or preferably more of the advantageous features listed below. A: A31800 \ 31893 ATOR \ 31893-101103 -Text document.doc - 16 November 2010 - The implementation of the invention does not cause adverse effects for the environment, since the only chemical compound necessary, namely hydrogen peroxide, is essentially non-polluting. In particular, no halogenated compound is produced. - The dose of hydrogen peroxide required is less than that used in the state of the art. - Disinfection according to the invention can be applied to existing facilities, even already contaminated. In particular, to disinfect a circuit of contaminated water, it is not necessarily necessary to empty the circuit and perform a chemical or mechanical cleaning, the direct application of ultraviolet radiation conjugated with hydrogen peroxide may suffice.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION The invention is now described in more detail and in a nonlimiting manner in the description which follows. The invention relates to the disinfection of water. By "water" is meant in the context of the present application any composition comprising at least 50% by weight of water, preferably at least 80% by weight of water or at least 90% by weight of water or at least 95% by weight of water or at least 98% by weight of water or at least 99% by weight of water. It may be in particular an aqueous solution, comprising dissolved species or possibly suspended solid species or possibly substances in liquid form miscible with water. Water within the meaning of the present application is a composition in which microorganisms are likely to develop. The disinfection of water within the meaning of the present application is understood as a curative or preventive treatment intended to limit or prevent the development of microorganisms or to reduce the number and activity thereof. The invention provides for the disinfection of water by injection of hydrogen peroxide (of formula H 2 O 2) into water and by irradiation of water with ultraviolet radiation. The water in question is usually contained in a container. The invention is particularly suitable in the case where the container is a circuit, in which the water circulates in an open loop, semi-open loop or preferably in a closed loop. This can be in particular the water contained in a heat transport circuit, in particular a cooling circuit of a domestic or industrial installation. The invention is particularly applicable to water circuits present in heat transfer installations (air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, etc.). ). Hydrogen peroxide is in principle injected into the water in liquid form, generally in a mixture with water (concentrated solution or stock solution generally containing from 0.5 to 70% of hydrogen peroxide). The means for injecting hydrogen peroxide into the water generally comprise dosing means, means for contacting the hydrogen peroxide with the water (for example a metering pump) and either a reservoir for peroxide of water. hydrogen, or means of connection to a reservoir (removable) of hydrogen peroxide. "Ultraviolet radiation" is understood to mean electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of between 10 and 400 nm. Because hydrogen peroxide absorbs more radiation at low wavelengths, it is useful for ultraviolet radiation to include radiation at as short a wavelength as possible. The ultraviolet radiation emitted may comprise one or more discrete lines or a continuous spectrum. It may possibly be accompanied by electromagnetic emission in other areas (for example in the visible range or infrared). The means for irradiating with ultraviolet radiation comprise means for emitting ultraviolet radiation, which may consist of one or more mercury vapor lamps, or possibly consist of one or more xenon vapor lamps or one or more diodes. electroluminescent (or light-emitting LED diode) emitting in the ultraviolet. For example, one or more low pressure mercury vapor lamps emitting a line at about 254 nm (in vacuum) can be used. Alternatively, one or more medium-pressure mercury vapor lamps emitting a continuous spectrum, including in the wavelength range in vacuo of less than 200 nm, may be used. The ultraviolet radiation emission means are advantageously arranged in the water circuit or in the vicinity of the water and are separated therefrom by a wall at least partially transparent to ultraviolet radiation. For example, in the case of a water circuit (cooling or otherwise) comprising one or more pipes, the ultraviolet radiation emission means are inserted into quartz sheaths and these subsets of lamps and sheaths may be: - immersed directly in the water circuit; A: A31800 \ 31893 ATOR \ 31893-101103 -Text dump.doc - 16 November 2010 - either inserted in an envelope (generally called reactor) whose geometry is optimized according to the lamp power, the flow and the quality some water. The ultraviolet radiation emission means may be positioned parallel or perpendicular to the water flow. This reactor is connected to the water circuit either to treat the entire flow or bypass. In the latter case, a recirculation pump allows the total volume of water in the circuit to be irradiated 1 to 10 times per hour (and preferably 3 to 7 times per hour) by ultraviolet radiation.
The irradiation is preferably carried out at a dose of 5 to 200 mJ / cm 2, preferably 40 to 160 mJ / cm 2. The dose is indicated according to the ratio of the electromagnetic energy emitted on the surface of the irradiated water. The injection of hydrogen peroxide is adapted so that the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in water is 1 to 100 mg / L, preferably 20 to 60 mg / L. The injection of hydrogen peroxide can be carried out at once or in several times (at regular time intervals or not), or even continuously. Since hydrogen peroxide degrades in water over time due in particular to irradiation with ultraviolet radiation, it is generally preferred to carry out repeated or continuous injection. It is possible to provide means for measuring the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the water, and a feedback loop adjusting the injection of hydrogen peroxide so as to maintain a concentration of hydrogen peroxide in water in a predetermined range. The ultraviolet radiation may also be applied once or repeatedly or continuously, the latter option being preferred for greater efficiency. For optimum efficiency in the context of a water circuit, it is appropriate to arrange the irradiation means in the vicinity of the hydrogen peroxide injection means and downstream thereof in the direction of flow of the hydrogen. the water. It is of course possible to provide several sets of irradiation means and / or means for injecting hydrogen peroxide, for example at several locations of a water circuit.
