Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to aluminized composite solid propellants and loadings comprising such propellants. Said propellants are propellants with low sensitivity to capacitive discharges. They are particularly suitable for rocket and missile propulsion loads. Solid propellants for these applications are composite solid propellants with an inert binder, most often of the polyurethane type, and contain ammonium perchlorate (oxidizing charge) and aluminum (reducing filler) charges. This family of propellants is that concerned by the present invention. The ratios by mass (by volume) of the above ingredients are typically about 68% (62%) for ammonium perchlorate, 18% (12%) for aluminum and 14% (26%). ° Io) for the binder. These propellants have low electrical conductivity and are sensitive to capacitive discharges. Thus, during manufacturing operations loads where necessarily occur manipulations, friction, movements of insulating materials and conductors, phenomena of electrostatic origin, such as electrostatic discharges, can occur and are likely to lead to breaks mechanical and / or ignition of the propellant. For these propellants, said to be sensitive to capacitive discharges, the analysis of the observed facts suggests that the reaction mechanism is essentially divided into two phases: 1st phase: appearance of a cracking phenomenon related to a critical potential, 2nd phase: appearance of an inflammation phenomenon related to a certain critical potential energy. All observations tend to show that the reaction starts within the propellant itself. The existence of a critical potential shows that it is one or more electrical phenomena that cause cracking. Among the known electrical phenomena, the microcapping between the aluminum particles, separated by the binder and the grains of ammonium perchlorate, can be regarded as the most probable.
Il a ainsi été défini un coefficient de "percolation de claquage" : P, tel que : Research has shown the influence, on the resistivity of a propellant, of the parameters of the various constitutive elements of said propellant, and, essentially, that of: the rate, the particle size with a constant aluminum content, the decrease in the particle diameter , that is to say the increase in their number, leads to obtain compositions more sensitive to capacitive discharges) and the shape of the aluminum particles, - the grain size of the grains of ammonium perchlorate (for said ammonium perchlorate, it is noted that the influence of the size of the grains is the inverse of that of the size of the aluminum particles), and the resistivity of the binder (the conductivity of the binder plays a fundamental role in the sensitivity of the propellant to capacitive discharges). The temperature parameter must also be considered. Indeed, some insensible propellants can become so by lowering the temperature. A model inspired by theories of percolation has been proposed by Kent, R. and Rat, R., in J. Electrostat., 17, pp. 299-312 (1985): "Static Electricity Phenomena in the Manufacture and Handling of Solid 20 Propellants". It has thus been defined a coefficient of "percolation breakdown": P, such that:
Nc/Ni 25 P = ---ON Nc / Ni 25 P = --- ON
avec : O = conductivité du liant 30 V = fraction volumique de liant Nc = nombre de particules conductrices (aluminium) Ni = nombre de particules isolantes (perchlorate d'ammonium). with: O = conductivity of the binder 30 V = volume fraction of binder Nc = number of conductive particles (aluminum) Ni = number of insulating particles (ammonium perchlorate).
For propellants qualified as sensitive, we have: P> 35 The sensitivity of composite solid propellants, especially at high load levels, capacitive discharges is governed by complex mechanisms, poorly controlled, far removed from those that we can observe within conventional (continuous) polymeric matrices. The interactions between the charges, between the charges and the binder, make it particularly difficult to predict the effects of incorporating an additive into the propellant to reduce its sensitivity to capacitive discharges. Modern composite solid propellants generally contain a polyurethane (PU) binder (inert binder) obtained by crosslinking a liquid polyol polymer, such as a hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene (PBHT). The crosslinking agent (at least bifunctional) is generally a polyisocyanate, preferably an alicyclic polyisocyanate. It consists mostly of diisocyanate Ilsophorone (IPDI). This type of PU binder is preferred because of its low viscosity (which makes it possible to increase the level of charges in the propellants) and because of its good resistance to aging. On the other hand, the PBHT-based PU binders have a resistivity (2 × 10 12 greater than that of the binders based on polypropylene glycol prepolymer (6 × 10 7 μm) and that of the carboxelechelic polybutadiene binders (7 × 10 9 μm). The present composite propellants, comprising a PBHT-based PU binder, are therefore more sensitive to capacitive discharges than the composite propellants of the older generations.
The current composite propellants equipping rockets and operational missiles are also the result of extensive developments in response to specifications including multiple stipulations including their ballistic properties, mechanical feasibility, aging resistance, cost. Only minor modifications of their compositions, at mass ratios less than or equal to 0.2%, can be tolerated, this, in order to retain all of their functional properties that led to their qualification. According to the prior art, it is known to increase the conductivity of non-energetic polymers by introducing conducting elements in their continuous structure, such as: micrometric carbon black particles (see the teaching of the patent application FR 2 812 648), carbon nanotubes (see the teaching of the patent application FR 2 887 554), nanoscale carbon fibers and nanoscale conductive particles (carbon, metal) or not (clay). The conductive elements are generally introduced at rates of at least a few percentages by weight. They are in any case introduced into a continuous structure (that of the non-energetic polymer). The propellants of the invention do not have such a continuous structure but a heterogeneous structure with grains of ammonium perchlorate and aluminum particles in the binder. For all practical purposes, the mass and volume ratios of the particles, grains and binder indicated in the introduction to this text are recalled.
US Pat. No. 5,372,664 also describes the introduction into solid propellants with energetic binder of micrometric fibers (0.1 μm to 0.25 μm in diameter and 100 μm to 5000 μm in length) of carbon, at 0.5% to 6% by weight. The desired effect is the increase in the burning rate of the (non-composite) propellants involved. These propellants are not or not very sensitive to capacitive discharges insofar as they contain no or very few metal particles (reducing charge) and because of the nature of their binder. It is thus known that the introduction of carbon fibers into the propellants has an effect on their rate of combustion.
The prior art therefore contains no teaching as to the addition of carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers in solid aluminized composite propellants. The applicant has shown, surprisingly, that the incorporation, at a very low rate, of carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers, within such propellants, makes it possible to significantly increase the conductivity of said propellants, thus rendering these propellants less sensitive. capacitive discharges, without significantly modifying their original functional properties.
The first object of the invention therefore relates to solid aluminized composite propellants with low sensitivity to capacitive discharges, containing, in their composition, a very low mass content, a charge of carbon nanotubes and / or carbon nanofibers. The aluminized composite propellants of the invention comprise an oxidizing charge of ammonium perchlorate and a reducing charge of aluminum in a polyurethane binder and typically a charge of carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers. The mass ratio of the charge of nanotubes and / or nanofibers of carbon in said propellant is less than or equal to 0.2% of the total mass of the propellant. It is generally between 0.01 and 0.2%, advantageously between 0.05 and 0.15%. Advantageously, said carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers have a shape ratio (L / D) greater than or equal to 5, preferably greater than or equal to 50, and even more preferably greater than or equal to 100. Advantageously, said Carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers have a diameter of between 0.4 and 50 nm and a length of between 100 and 100,000 times their diameter. Most advantageously, said carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers have, at the same time, the advantageous characteristics of aspect ratio and diameter / length above. The carbon nanotubes present may be of any type: in particular of the MWNT (for "multi wall nanotube") type or of the SWNT 25 (for "single wall nanotube") type, their carbon purity is greater than 85 advantageously greater than or equal to 90%. The composition of the propellants of the invention generally comprises: from 60 to 80% by weight of (said oxidizing charge of) ammonium perchlorate, from 5 to 25% by weight (of said reducing charge) of aluminum, from 5 to 16% by weight of said polyurethane binder, and from 0.01 to 0.2% of said charge of nanotubes and / or carbon nanofibers.
The polyurethane binder is preferably a crosslinked hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene. The crosslinking agent (at least bifunctional), intervened upstream, is generally a polyisocyanate, preferably an alicyclic polyisocyanate, It advantageously consists of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). With reference to the oxidizing (PA) and reducing (Al) charges of the propellants of the invention, it is possible, in no way limiting, to specify the following. This is obviously particulate matter. The median diameter of the oxidizing grains (PA) is advantageously between 3 μm and 400 μm. The median diameter of the reducing particles (Al) is advantageously between 1 μm and 50 μm. In known Persian manner, the composition of the propellants of the invention also generally contains (for less than 5% by weight) at least one plasticizer and at least one additive.
Said at least one plasticizer is preferably selected from dioctyl azelate (DOZ), diisooctyl sebacate, isodecyl pelargonate, polyisobutylene and dioctyl phthalate (DOP). Said at least one additive may especially consist of one or more adhesion agents between the binder and the oxidizing charge, such as, for example, bis (2-methylaziridinyl) -methylaminophosphine oxide (methyl BAPO) or triethylene pentamine acrylonitrile (TEPAN ), one or more antioxidants derived from those of the rubber industry, such as for example ditertiobutylparacresol (DBC) or 2,2'-methylenebis (4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) (MBP5), in one or more crosslinking catalysts, such as, for example, iron or copper acetylacetonate, tin dibutyldilaurate (DBTL). Incidentally, the list of ingredients given above is not exhaustive. Thus, it is not excluded that another energy charge (in partial substitution of the AP) is present in the composition of the propellants of the invention (following its introduction, as a constituent ingredient, during the manufacture of said propellants (see below)). The composition of the propellants of the invention advantageously contains: from 66 to 70% by weight of (said oxidizing charge of) ammonium perchlorate, from 15 to 20% by weight (of said reducing charge) of aluminum; From 7 to 15% by weight of said polyurethane binder, and from 0.05% to 0.15% of said nanotube and / or carbon nanofiber feedstock. The manufacturing processes used to obtain propellants are known to those skilled in the art and are advantageously optimized according to the exact composition of said propellants. The constituent ingredients of said propellant are generally mixed for forming a paste, by mixing said paste, casting it into a mold (in the form of the desired loading) and baking (heat treatment) thereof. (for its crosslinking) in said mold. According to one variant, the mixing and kneading operations of the constituent ingredients are carried out batchwise. According to another variant, they are implemented continuously. The manufacture of the propellants of the invention does not pose, in these contexts, no particular problems. It is in line with known processes involving nanotubes and carbon nanofibers in the pulp. In the context of the processes specified above, said carbon nanotubes and / or nanofibers intervene (at a mass ratio of less than or equal to 0.2%) during the constitution of the dough. The invention also relates to a solid propellant charge (propellant charge) at least partially (partly or wholly) consisting of at least one composite solid propellant of the invention, as described above. Said loading typically contains a composite solid propellant of the invention. The invention finally relates to a rocket engine, characterized in that it comprises at least one load of the invention. The propellants of the invention thus have a low electrical resistivity, conferring them less sensitivity to capacitive discharges, while retaining their original functional properties, especially on ballistic and mechanical plans. It is now proposed to illustrate the invention by Example 1 (example of propellant composition) presented below, in the last column of Table 2. Propellant A is a reference propellant, not containing in its composition. composition, carbon nanotubes (or carbon nanofibers). It is a composite propellant containing a charge of ammonium perchlorate, an aluminum filler, a polyurethane binder based on PBHT R45HTLO sold by the company Sartomer crosslinked, a plasticizer and additives.
The propellant of Example 1 is a propellant of the invention. It is identical to propellant A, except for the reduced binder weight ratio of 0.1% and compensated by the addition of 0.1% of carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes incorporated in the propellant of Example 1 are marketed by Nanocyl under the trade name NanocylTM NC7000. These are MWNT nanotubes whose characteristics are shown in Table 1 below.
