Description
-1- La présente invention concerne un dispositif qui permet de protéger unThe present invention relates to a device which makes it possible to protect a
It consists in putting in electrical connection with the electronic component a thermal radiator which disconnects automatically as soon as a certain temperature threshold is exceeded.
These components are generally semiconductors (such as ZnO varistors). Semiconductor components are used in our electrical, electronic, computer and telecommunications equipment. But these components have one fault in common: overheating. Overheating begins with a hot spot and then an entire component until the device is damaged and can cause fires. The ZnO varistor is part of the semiconductor ceramic components. Thanks to its particular properties (non-linearity, figure 1) it is widely used in the protection of electrical equipment, electronic against atmospheric or industrial overvoltages. In normal condition, the ZnO varistor has a high resistance. The protection path is an open circuit. In the presence of a transient overvoltage, the varistor begins to conduct and flows the overload to the ground. At the same time, it absorbs a part of transient energy.
When the surge energy does not exceed the absorption capacity of a varistor, it returns to its original characteristic and is ready for operation again for the next surge. On the other hand, if the energy of the overvoltage exceeds the absorption limit of a varistor, it degrades at the level of the electrical characteristic and when the threshold voltage of a varistor at 1 mA is lower than that of service, it enters a thermal runaway. It heats, burns and goes into a short circuit (10-500). This thermal runaway is dangerous for the equipment to be protected. It is therefore imperative to put a thermal protection circuit to avoid this defect. Currently on the market for coated varistors, protection by fuse, circuit breaker or thermal fuse. These means are not quite adapted to the protection of a varistor against thermal runaway. The necessary requirements of a disconnection system for a thermal runaway varistor are as follows: 1- A varistor is a surge protection component, its essential role is to discharge transient overloads to the earth. First requirement: the disconnection system must hold the nominal discharge current of a varistor (from a few hundred amperes up to 10kA). 2- The varistor in normal state has a small leakage current which passes through the component (of the order of A). Once the varistor degraded, it starts to heat from 10mA. Second requirement: the disconnection system must operate from low currents in case of thermal runaway (500mA or 2A). 2897231 -2- The protection of a fuse varistor can meet the first criterion if one selects the large size to discharge the discharge current. But he can not cut off power for currents below his rating. Circuit breaker protection is similar to the fuse.
This component is well used in the protection of electrical or electronic devices against overheating. On the other hand, a normal thermal fuse is not made to withstand the shock currents: some even lose their initial thermal characteristics. After shock currents it goes to open circuit or works very badly at the temperature. We have found a disconnection system that perfectly meets both requirements for coated varistors. The protection circuit consists of a metal plate deposited by specific bonding on one of the two surfaces of the coated varistor. A low temperature melting element (alloy or tin wire) or an elastic alloy with a low temperature weld is then welded. The position of the welded element can be varied (parallel or perpendicular) depending on the circumstances. According to particular embodiments: the cooling means is in thermal contact with the component placed in series in the supply circuit of the component and comprises means for breaking the electrical circuit in case of temperature overrun. - The circuit breaking means consist of a fusible conductive element. the cut-off element consisting of an electrically conductive mechanical voltage part on the radiator is mechanically released under the effect of heat (temperature which exceeds a determined threshold) so as to open the circuit. - The radiator consists of a metal plate conductive heat and electricity placed in thermal contact with the component and in series with the circuit supplying the component. The metal plate is fixed by specific gluing. the thermal cut-off element can move in the plane of the plate of the electronic component so that the assembly occupies a very compact location. the electronic component is an overvoltage protection component. A circuit for protection against overvoltages causing thermal overheating. the electronic component is a ZnO varistor. the melting point of the connection between the varistor and the metal plate is always higher in temperature than that of the melting element.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention: Figure 1 shows the electrical characteristics of a ZnO varistor. Figure 2 shows a circuit diagram of overvoltage protection with our thermal protection circuit. Figure 3 shows the detailed configuration of our thermal protection circuit.
With reference to these drawings: In normal state, a leakage current passes through the varistor (4). In the presence of a transient overvoltage (5), the discharge current passes the melting element (2) then the metal plate (3) and passes through the varistor (4) before entering the earth. The diameter of the melting element (2) is selected to pass the high current. The metal plate (3) bonded specifically to the coated varistor (4) acts as a radiator and prolongs the life of the varistor. When the varistor (4) is strongly degraded, it goes into thermal runaway. A hot spot appears (the position of the hot spot being random from one varistor to another); the varistor (4) heats more and more. The metal plate (3) adhered to the coated varistor (4) becomes a heat collector. Thanks to the small thickness of the metal plate (3) (<0.1 mm), to the bonding on the surface and to the good heat conductivity of the metal, the heat of the hot spot is quickly transmitted to the melting element (2). . There is therefore very little heat dispersion during transmission. When the temperature of the melting element (2) rises to its melting point (about 180 ° C), it begins to melt and is cut off by projection. There is complete separation between the degraded varistor (4) and the power supply (6). The IEC 61643-11 arrester standard requires short-circuit protection for protective surge arresters. In addition to thermal protection, the melting element (2) acts as a normal fuse. When there is a short-circuit (accident or damaged by very strong discharge currents) in a surge arrester composed of varistors equipped with our thermal disconnection system, the melting element (2) melts when the intensity of the current exceeds its limit capacity. The protection device according to the invention finds its application in a class III surge arrester in accordance with the IEC 61643-11 standard, designed to be integrated into electrical or electronic equipment against transient overvoltages induced in low voltage installation networks.
According to a first exemplary embodiment, the surge arrester has an asymmetrical configuration whose schematic diagram is shown in FIG. 1. It is composed of a varistor (V) equipped with a thermal disconnector (D) between the phase (Ph). ) and the neutral (N), a gas spark gap (G) between neutral and PE, and a state indication system. This version is proposed for the application in the installation where the phase and the neutral 10 are distinct. According to a second exemplary embodiment, the surge arrester has a symmetrical configuration whose schematic diagram is presented in FIG. 2. It is composed of two varistors (V) equipped with a thermal disconnector (D) each, a third varistor ( V) connected between the common point of the first two and PE, and a state indication system. This version is proposed for the application in the installation where phase (Ph) and neutral (N) are difficult to identify. Both exemplary embodiments utilize thermal wire disconnector technology soldered onto the adhesive copper ribbon which is part of a patent application project. The adhesive copper tape bonded to the surface of the varistor coated with epoxy resin acts as a heat sink. The tin wire, welded to the ribbon plays a role of thermal fuse. When a varistor picks up too much overload energy, it enters a state of thermal runaway. The tin wire soldered to the copper ribbon melts and the varistor 25 is disconnected from the power supply. A status indicator consisting of an LED, a diode and a resistor (R) indicates the status of operation. The LED goes off when the varistor is out of order. The surge arrester housing (Figure 6, 7, 8) consists of two symmetrical shells and a removable plate. Closing is done with 4 screws. The housing is made of plastic material in accordance with UL94-V0. The outer dimensions of the case are 45.5mm for the length, 36.5mm for the width and 26.5mm for the height. These dimensions allow the use of 20mm diameter varistors that give a maximum discharge current of 15kA (8 / 2Qgs). The removable plate easily allows the production of output son or pins. Finally the location of the protection board is calculated to have better thermal and electrical insulation.
