COMPOSITES A MATRICE POLYMERE COMPRENANT POLYMERIC MATRIX COMPOSITES COMPRISING
The present invention relates to the field of composite polymer materials. More particularly, the invention relates to polymer matrix composites containing a bi-population of mineral fillers: at least one population at the nanoscale and at least one population at the micrometer scale. This material has improved mechanical properties and fire retardancy.
These composite materials consist of a polymer matrix, reinforced by a second phase. This second phase, called charge, consists of different types of particles (different in morphology, size) as shown in Table 1. The structure and properties of the composite depend in particular on the compatibility between its organic and inorganic components.

2873381 2 Schematically, depending on the size of the load, the composites are classified into two subgroups: when the load has at least one dimension of micron size, it is called microcomposite (or composite), when the load has at least one nanoscale dimension, we speak of nanocomposite.
Incorporating a nanoscale filler into a polypropylene matrix can significantly increase the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and fire retardancy properties of the base polymer. Such improvements have been obtained for a loading rate ranging from 1 to 10% by weight (Leuteritz et al., Progress in Polypropylene Nanocomposite Development in Advanced Engineering Materials, 2003, 5 (9), 678-681). WO 0066657 discloses three additive formulations for a vinyl acetate-ethylene acetate copolymer (EVA Escorene ™ Ultra 119), making it possible to increase the resistance of the charcoal residue (also called char) which is formed during the combustion of this compound. EVA. This tank creates a barrier limiting the degradation of the material under it.
WO 0104193 discloses thermosetting polymer compositions based on epoxy resin, comprising two types of fillers: a nanometric filler and a micrometric mineral filler. As nanometric filler is used an organophilic sheet phyllosilicate obtained by intercalation of a blowing agent (derivatives sulfonium, phosphonium and ammonium) between the silicate layers which can be natural or synthetic .; as micrometric mineral filler is preferably used quartz powder (according to Examples 2 to 22). Nineteen embodiments are presented in this prior document. For sixteen of these embodiments, the total percentage of filler is greater than 50% by weight; for the other three modes, this percentage is between 20 and 40% by weight. A significant improvement of the modulus of elasticity of these nanocomposite polymers is observed for a total percentage of charges of between 50 and 60% by weight.
The combination of micrometric fillers of different shapes (for example fibers and leaflets or even fibers and spheres) allows the improvement of many mechanical properties (Jârvelâ et al., Multicomponent compounding polypropylene in Journal of Materials Science, 1996, 31 , 3853-3860.).
The present invention describes a polymer matrix composite material having remarkable and unexpected mechanical, thermomechanical and fire retardancy properties for a total charge rate of less than or equal to 20% by mass. The improvement of these properties is obtained by combining a nanometric charge and a micrometric charge. The level of performance achieved by this combination is greater than one skilled in the art can expect when the fillers are added individually into the polymer matrix.
The invention relates to a polymer composition with improved mechanical properties and retardation characterized in that it comprises: 80 to 99% by weight of polymer; 2873381 4 1 to 20% by mass of nanometric charges and micrometric charges.
Preferably, the invention relates to a polymer composition comprising 90% of polymer, 5% of nanometric fillers and 5% of micrometric fillers.
According to various embodiments, the polymer composition has the following characteristics, if appropriate combined: it comprises a polymer which may be a polyolefin, preferably polypropylene; in this case, a part of the polymer (preferably 5 to 10%) is functionalized, for example, with maleic anhydride. The addition of maleic polypropylene (for example Polybond 3200 marketed by Crompton Corporation) makes it possible to compatibilize the polymer matrix and the mineral filler; in another variant embodiment, it comprises a technical polymer, preferentially polyamide; it comprises a nanometric charge, preferably organo-modified clay; it comprises a mineral micrometric charge, preferably an anisotropic filler such as talc, wollastonite, mica, calcium carbonate or glass fibers. The size of the micrometric particles varies in at least one dimension between 0.1 to 600 m, preferably 10 to 100 m.
By organo-modified clay is meant a clay treated with a salt that can be inserted between the layers of phyllosilicates such as montmorillonite.
The inter-slip distance is then increased. The compatibility between the filler and the polymer increases thus allowing the dispersion of the filler at the nanoscale.
The total amount of mineral filler varies from 1 to 20% by weight. The formulation may also contain compatibilizing agents, such as, for example, maleic polypropylene. The micrometric charges may have undergone a surface treatment (stearic acid, for example).
The present invention will be better understood on reading the description which will be made with reference to the appended figures, in which: FIG. 1 shows the images, obtained by scanning electron microscopy, of the micrometric charges used according to the invention: FIG. talc; Fig. lb - CaCO3; Fig. 1c - wollastonite; Fig. 1d - mica; fig. 2 presents the images, obtained by transmission electron microscopy, showing the dispersion of the nanometric charges in the polymer matrix; fig. 3 shows the images, obtained by scanning electron microscopy, of the cryo-fractured surfaces corresponding to the composite polymer materials according to the invention: FIG. 3a PPC1; Fig. 3b PPC2; Fig. 3c PPC3; Fig. 3d PPC4; fig. 4 represents a screw profile used in the preparation of polyamide-based composite polymer materials.
The invention relates to a polymer composition containing a polymer, a filler having at least one nanoscale dimension and a filler having at least one micrometer scale dimension. These two charges, combined with one another, lead to a synergistic effect with regard to the mechanical properties (Young's modulus in particular), thermomechanical and fire retardancy. It is proposed that this synergy is related to the formation of percolating interactions obtained preferentially at a low rate of reinforcement when a double population of charges is used. The specific mechanisms of the claimed properties are not fully understood. In this association, the form factor seems to play a determining role.
The synergistic effect is illustrated in the following examples.

Implementation: The mixture between the mineral fillers and the polymer was made by melting by extrusion and kneading.
La température des différentes zones de chauffe (alimentation, transport et sortie) est fixée à 190 C. The following procedure was used: 1 - extrusion of maleic polypropylene and polypropylene nanocomposite (polypropylene / clay mixture, PPn formula): mixing is carried out using a DSK 42/7 extruder. The temperature of the different heating zones (power, transport and output) is fixed at 190 C.
Les conditions opératoires sont établies de la manière suivante: Température de consigne: 190 C. 2 - kneading of the polypropylene nanocomposite with the micrometric loads: the mixtures are made using a kneader with a PLASTI-CORDER drive unit of the brand BRABENDER. This system includes a torque unit (torque and rotation speed measurement) and a temperature control box consisting of 6 Eurotherm brand regulators of type 808 PID. The assembly is coupled to a PL 2000-6 interface controlled by a computer allowing the actual acquisition of the torque and the material temperature. The operating conditions are established as follows: Set temperature: 190 C.
Vitesse de rotation: 80 tour par minute. Rotation speed: 80 rpm.
Durée: jusqu'à stabilisation du couple. Duration: until torque stabilization.
Formatting: The composites obtained by mixing are shaped by means of a hydraulic heating press at 190 ° C. under approximately 40 bars so as to obtain plates of 100 × 100 × 3 mm 3 for cone calorimeter tests and plates of 40 × 4 × 1. 6 mm3 for the evaluation of thermomechanical properties. One plate of each formulation placed in liquid nitrogen for 10 min is cryo-fractured and then the surface is analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy).
Evaluation of mechanical properties: The tests were carried out on a hydraulic machine type INSTRON 8872 coupled to an optical extensometry system. Its principle consists in a focusing of a camera on the zone of deformation of the sample, a real-time analysis of the video image (follow-up of profile, displacement of spots, markers or markers, on dumbbell type test-tube) allowing a control of the machine parameters according to the response of the material. This system has the advantage of measuring non-contact deformations and a true true strain deformation curve determination at constant true strain rate.
Evaluation of fire retardancy properties: The measurements are performed on a cone calorimeter (Stanton Redcroft) according to the procedure defined in ASTM 1354-90. The method is based on oxygen consumption. The sample is subjected to an external heat flux (50 kW / m2) emitted by a truncated cone. The repeatability on the heat transfer rate (HRR) values is 10%. The values reported here are based on an average of three trials.

Good dispersion of the charges, without any change in size or shape of the particles, is obtained for PPC1, PPC3 and PPC4. In the case of PPC2 (precipitated CaCO3), the cohesive rupture does not allow to suspect morphological variation. No silicate slip is observed on these cryofractures.
Mechanical Properties The samples were tested at a strain rate of 10-3s-1. The results are shown in Table 4. The following definitions are used here: True strain: change in length per unit initial longitudinal length = ln (transverse = ln / t \ CO \ 0) True stress: tensile force per unit of the cross-sectional area taken in the reference length (between marks) at any given moment in the F = SO eXP (transverse Young's modulus) test: ratio of the tensile stress to the corresponding strain below the limit of proportionality The slope of the tangent to the strain-strain curve for a small deformation is usually taken as the modulus of elasticity Deformation and tensile stress: tensile stress and increase of the reference length of the specimen to break.

Fire retardancy properties The performances in terms of heat flow of the different samples are collated in Table 5 and in the diagram D2 (HRR heat flow curve as a function of time). Peak heat flow or HRR peak is a key parameter that characterizes the fire retardancy properties of a material. It characterizes the ability of a material to spread the fire to its environment. The results show that a significant synergy is obtained when the talc or the calcium carbonate are added in combination in the polymer matrix (comparison PPm1 / PPC1 and PPm2 / PPC2). The clay / wollastonite and clay / mica combination also makes it possible to obtain fire retardant materials (decrease of the HRR peak by 50% relative to the PP, by approximately 33% relative to the PPn). Since this reduction is much greater than the incorporated charge rate, it can not be attributed solely to a phenomenon of dilution of the flammable phase (the polymer matrix) by a non-flammable phase (charge).
