Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a paper-based container. The container to be manufactured is a transposition of an existing container, already produced from complex films based on flexible plastic material known as the "Doypack" system (R), using films based on paper.
The figure.1 represents the three parts constituting the container according to the "Doypack" system (R) with in successive dashes the limit of the areas of fixing of the parts between them.
Figure.2 shows an exploded perspective view of container according to the "Doypack" system (R), with the front face larger than the rear face, when it is deployed.
Figure.3 shows the principle of a machine according to the invention manufacturing two containers simultaneously using plasticized paper on one side.
Figure.4 shows the principle of a machine according to the invention using papers fixed together by glue.
Figure.5 shows a detail of lateral attachment of the bottom forming the bellows.
The "Doypack" system (R) which was mainly designed to contain liquids offers a container comprising a front face 1 (figure.1) and a rear face 2, rectangular, of the same width and height and a bottom 3 formed of a rectangular sheet, of the same width and height substantially smaller than the front 1 and rear 2 faces, folded in half along its width to form a bellows. The complex film constituting the front 1 and rear 2 faces comprise on the outside a film of a plastic material made semi-rigid by using it in a thickness greater than strictly necessary, and on the inside a laminated film intended for welding to a temperature significantly lower than the melting temperature of the outer film; the complex film composing the bellows is on the contrary very flexible but of similar structure with an external film supporting a film laminated for welding. The front 1 and rear 2 faces are fixed together by welding their lateral parts 4 either directly, in their upper part, or indirectly in their lower part via the bottom 3 forming a bellows. The edges 14 of the bellows forming the bottom 3 have laterally, in the width of the lateral welds 4, cutouts 5 (FIG. 5) which correspond so that the front 1 and rear 2 faces can come into contact directly at height from the bottom 3 and weld together so as to laterally block the opening of the bellows formed by the bottom 3. Each side of the bottom bellows 3 is on the other hand fixed to the front 1 and rear 2 faces, which face it respectively , in the central part located between the lateral parts 4 on the surface of a fixing zone 13 starting from the support base 6 up to a curve 7 in the shape of a "U" starting from the upper fold 8 of the bottom 3 forming a bellows, at the level of the left side part 4, to end again at the upper fold 8 of the bottom 3 forming a bellows, but at the level of the right side part 4; the central part 9 of the curve 7 being a few millimeters from the support base 6. When such a bag is deployed, the front 1 (FIG. 2) and rear 2 sides move apart, bending in the shape of a semi cylinder whose generatrices are vertical and whose section is determined by the shape of the curve 7 in the form of a "U" previously described limiting the fixing area 13 of the bottom 3 forming a bellows which is fixed to the front 1 and rear 2 faces; the bottom 3 forming a bellows deploys until its free part 10 is stretched, which gives maximum spacing, in the central part 9 of the curve 7 which is also the central part of the front 1 and rear 2 faces; the free part 10 of the bottom 3 is close in this area to the support base 6 and the spacing of the front 1 and rear 2 faces decreases as one approaches the edges and the part free 10 of the bottom 3 rises gradually until reaching the level of the fold 12 of the bottom 3 where the front 1 and rear 2 faces meet to weld together. The support base 6 is formed by the base of the front 1 and rear 2 faces welded to the walls of the bottom 3 forming a bellows which gives sufficient rigidity for the container to stand upright. Generally this container is filled in particular with liquid and the front 1 and rear 2 faces are welded together at their top to close it tightly. The inner film of this container is welded by high frequency radiation to which the outer film is insensitive.
The container that we propose to manufacture is of the same configuration as that which we have just described but the outer film is replaced by paper. This paper can be fixed by gluing paper to paper by coating with glue only the areas of lateral parts 4 and the fixing zone 13 previously described. In another version, it can internally include a plastic film such as polyethylene which makes it possible to carry out the welding as previously described using thermal electrodes welding through the paper. As regards the fixing of the edges 14 of the bellows on the lateral edges of the front 1 and rear 2 faces, it can be produced by notches 5 (FIG. 5) as previously described, but also by bonding paper against paper along an area. 41 rectangular for fixing the bellows laterally.
As paper has the property of being fixed on molten polyethylene, the paper constituting the bottom 3 forming a bellows may not have an internal polyethylene film and nevertheless be fixed on the front face 1 and rear 2 which are coated with a film. polyethylene.
In a preferred version of the invention, and by way of nonlimiting example, the container is used for packaging a quantity of fries of the order of 100 grams to 150 grams; the rear face 2 (FIG. 2) is higher than the front face 1 from 10 mm to 25 mm to facilitate manual opening of the container; the bottom bellows 3 (FIG. 1) has a depth 21, ranging from 25mm to 50mm, which increases with the width of the container; the paper covering the outside of the front 1 and rear 2 faces is preferably of the same thickness, preferably between 35 grams and 50 grams per square meter, while the paper constituting the bottom 3 forming a bellows has a thickness that is preferably less than 1 '' order from 20 grams to 30 grams per square meter; when the papers are coated with polyethylene on their internal face, the coating is made at the rate of 6 grams to 10 grams per square meter.
The machine, object of the invention, makes it possible to simultaneously manufacture two containers 15 and 16, connected together by their base, which are then separated by cutting; these containers 15 and 16 which are of the same width can be of different height. In what follows we will describe the simplest case which consists in simultaneously manufacturing two identical containers 15 and 16 with paper coated on the entire surface of one of their faces, with a plastic material based on polyolefin or an equivalent product for welding. We start from three reels, the first of which delivers a lower strip 17 (figure 3) of coated paper which has a width 18 corresponding to the sum of the heights of the rear face 2 (figure 1) of the containers 15 and 16 and which is positioned so as to be able to unwind the lower strip 17 of paper in a direction, for example, horizontal, with the side having a coating facing upwards; the second coil delivers an intermediate strip 19 (FIG. 3) which has a width 20 which is substantially equal to four times the depth 21 (FIG. 1) of the bellows is positioned to unroll the intermediate strip 19 horizontally with the coating facing the bottom and after shaping, as we will describe below, come to place, with its axial plane of symmetry located in the axial plane of symmetry of the lower strip 18, above and in contact with the latter; the third reel delivers an upper strip 22 which has a width 23 equal to the sum of the heights of the front face 1 (FIG. 1) of the containers 15 and 16, is positioned so as to be able to unwind the upper strip 22 above the two other bands with its axial plane of symmetry coincident with that of the other two. With regard to the intermediate strip 19, a coating is made in the form for example of a rectangle of glue 24, used for fixing the edges 14 of the bellows, on the paper face which is located above in the example chosen , at regular intervals, corresponding to the width 25 of a container, on a rectangular surface arranged coaxially with the intermediate strip 19 over a width perpendicular to the axis of the intermediate strip 19 of the order of two to four centimeters and over a length preferably less than or equal to twice the width 28 of the lateral parts 4 (FIG. 1); a sheath is formed with a shaping device, for example of the sailor neck type, by bringing the lateral edges 26 (FIG. 3) of the intermediate strip 19 to touch each other above the central part of the latter and in the plane of axial symmetry so that the plastic film is outside the sheath; then the sheath is crushed so that the lateral edges 26 are found in the axis 27 of the intermediate strip 19 and are fixed gradually to the glue rectangles 24 previously deposited on the central part of the intermediate strip and which are inside the sheath; the same result can be obtained by inverting each of the two lateral edges 26 by suitably spaced guides in order to form a longitudinal fold on each side of depth corresponding to the depth of the bellows such that the lateral edges 26 meet on the axis 27 as previously described; the intermediate strip 19 thus shaped is deposited on the lower strip 17 and it is then covered by the upper strip 22. In a variant of the invention the lateral edges 26 closing the tube along the axis 27 can be covered one by two centimeters which makes the adjustments simpler and as we will see later reinforces the vertical resistance of the container; the axial part of the overlap zone is preferably substantially in the plane of axial symmetry of the lower 17, intermediate 19 and upper 22 bands; in this case it is preferable that the overlapping parts are fixed over their entire length; when using an intermediate strip 19 of paper coated with a heat-sealable plastic film, there is no particular precaution to be taken; in return if the intermediate strip is not coated, it is preferable to coat with glue the upper part of the side strip 26 of the intermediate strip which will cover the other side strip 26 at the same time as the glue rectangles 24 previously described.
All three superimposed strips then pass between a hot electrode 28 and a counter electrode (not shown in Figure 3) or two hot electrodes (only one of which is shown in Figure 3)) which are rotary cylinders around electrically heated horizontal axes; the heating cylinder (s) have the shape of the zone to be welded 29 in relief, in the shape of an "H" lying successively at a pitch corresponding to the width 25 of the container; the vertical branches 30 of the "H" carry out the lateral welds 31 of two consecutive containers; the horizontal part 32 of the "H" makes it possible to simultaneously produce the weld zone bottoms 33 of two containers placed in opposition by their bottom; the adhesive rectangle 24 must be deposited on the intermediate strip so that during the welding by the heating cylinder or cylinders, it is placed at the level of the vertical branches 30 of the "H" corresponding to the lateral welds 31.
It then remains to make a cut in the axial plane of the three welded sheets to separate the bottoms of the opposing containers, for example using a cutting disc 34 whose main plane is in the axis of the strips, then in making a transverse cut to separate the successive containers connected by their lateral welds 31, by at least one cutting bar 35 perpendicular to the axis of the bands fixed on a rotary cylinder 36.
In a variant of the invention, when the paper used is not coated with plastic over its entire surface, the lower strip 37 (FIG. 4) is glued on its upper part, and the upper strip 38 on its lower part, before their assembly with the intermediate strip 39 shaped, on a surface identical to the welding surface described above using sizing rolls 42 and 43 and the three strips are pressed between two rolls 40 (only one of which is shown in the figure .4) heated or not depending on whether it is hot or cold adhesives. As we have specified above, when the intermediate strip 39 has an area for overlapping the side edges after shaping, it is preferable that the side edges which overlap are fixed together. One can proceed to the longitudinal and transverse cuts as previously described.
In the case where there is a covering of the lateral parts of the intermediate strip, during its shaping, this covering is found in the form of a third thickness of paper at the base 6 (FIG. 2) of the front face 1 which significantly increases the rigidity of the container.
