Abstract

The system for allowing the wider public to receive images organised into pages of text uses a 'Videotext' server (1) which is connected to a radio transmitter transmitting on a characteristic wavelength (lambda). This wavelength is such as to lie in the range from 88 - 108 MHz and operates with frequency modulation (2). The transmitter is connected to an aerial (3). Reception of the information is achieved by a receiver (4) which is connected by a link cable (5) to a display terminal such as a 'Minitel' device (6). The type of modulation used may be different in different frequency bands, whilst the receiver may also be of an alternative type.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for enabling the general public to receive over the air, images organized in text pages according to the Videotex mode, standard used by the Minitel.

The transmission takes place on the frequency band reserved for free radios, in cohabitation with them. The frequency range starts from eighty eight megahertz to one hundred and eight megahertz, in frequency modulation.

The transmission of these images organized in pages of texts is traditionally carried out by telematic servers, routed by the cable telecommunications networks, which obliges the user to pay telecommunications costs increased by the price of the services rendered, and this at in proportion to the time of connection to the server.

Some of these telematic servers are certainly inexpensive but still prohibit disadvantaged audiences from long and repetitive connections.

The device according to the invention overcomes this drawback. It comprises a telematic server, a frequency modulation transmitter using a frequency x of between eighty eight megahertz and one hundred and eight megahertz, on the band currently allocated to free radios, a traditional frequency modulation receiver having the band described above, a Minitel type terminal and finally a connecting cord - described in Figure 1 ensuring the electrical connection between the receiver and the terminal.

For the emission part, a server generates images organized in pages of texts, cadence at best the scrolling of said images to allow the users to read them in their entirety. A recording can be carried out on traditional magnetic support (magnetic tape or audio cassette) to allow the replay of texts without the use of the server. The signal from either the server or the magnetic medium is encoded in the form of ASCII characters (American Standard Code for Information
Interchange), standardized seven-bit coding for the transmission of information. Said signal is then directed to the transmitter which radiates using an aerial in frequency modulation by transmitting on a frequency x, in accordance with the law in force.

For the reception part, the user will tune his receiver in frequency modulation on frequency X, and will check by ear the presence of the modulated carrier diffusing a characteristic sound. After which the same user will power on the Minitel terminal, and connect the cord of the low frequency output of the receiver (external socket for headphones) to the Minitel socket. The user will connect the Minitel using the Connection key and adjust the receiver's low frequency output volume if necessary until the text pages appear on the screen. If parasitic characters appear on the screen, review the orientation of the receiver antenna and / or redo tuning. The user can, if he wishes, keep the pages of texts thanks to the recording of these on magnetic support (audio cassette or magnetic tape) and thus repeat a delayed reading.

Minitel .
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 shows in section, the connecting cord between the receiver and the terminal. The male Jack type plug (1) will be connected to the receiver, the male (4) and female (3) telecommunications plugs will be connected to the same type of socket on the Minitel. The conductors (2) provide the electrical connection between the receiver and the
Minitel.

La figure 2 représente l'ensemble du dispositif d'émission et de réception.FIG. 2 represents the whole of the transmission and reception device.
