Abstract

The telescopic steering column has two parts (2,3) that can slide axially one relative to the other. The two parts have complementary ridges and grooves (4,5) that transmit rotary motion. Play between the two parts is absorbed an elastic ring(7,8,9) made of a metal. The ring is corrugated (7a,7b), with the profile of the corrugations complementary to the ridges and grooves of the two parts of the steering column. The ring is fitted between the two parts of the steering column by compression, ensuring it is pre-stressed to absorb play. A lock (10) provides axial location for the ring.
