Abstract

The plant consists of one or more primary tanks (2) for homogenisation of the waste water and separation of heavy materials from it before it is transferred to the next treatment cycle, such as a lagoon, biological process, activated mud or decanter/digester. The primary tank is divided into sections (2a,2b) by one or more permeable partitions which act as filters which trap heavy particles and floating materials, allowing only dissolved and homogenised materials through into the adjoining section. The plant is controlled by a hydraulic system with one or more pumps (4), and a flow control system (5,6,7) which can be operated manually or by a programmable micro-computer unit (10).

Description

The present invention relates to a process for the pretreatment of waste water intended to be subsequently treated by any purification process.

Traditionally, the complete purification of waste water is carried out according to the following stages:
- pre-treatment,
- primary treatment,
- elimination of carbon pollution,
- elimination of nitrogen and phosphorus,
- complementary treatment,
- treatment and disposal of sludge.

The present invention therefore falls within the framework of the first two stages of this cycle.

In traditional processes, the aim of pretreatment is to separate the coarsest materials and the elements liable to interfere with the subsequent stages of the treatment. It generally comprises three operations:
- the purpose of screening is to retain bulky waste at the entrance to the treatment plant according to different principles (manual grids, mechanical grids, shredding, sieving, etc.),
- the purpose of sand removal is to extract the sands present in the raw effluent in order to avoid deposits in the pipes and to disturb the other stages of treatment. During this second operation, the extracted materials are also stored at the entrance to the treatment plant.

- deoiling consists in separating oils and hydrocarbons from the raw effluent. Again, the material thus collected is stored at the entrance to the treatment plant.

The method synthesizes the operations described above. It accepts all of the effluent brought to the treatment plant. The wastewater arrives at the site of the station and is discharged directly into the primary tank (s) within which the homogenization and separation of the residues and heavy materials contained in the water to be treated takes place. No screening, desanding and de-oiling is therefore necessary at the head of the treatment plant, regardless of the nature of the domestic materials received. Only the rot-proof material that will not be reached by this process will remain trapped in the primary tank pending manual evacuation by pumping. This process therefore eliminates the obligation to collect waste that accumulates at the entrance of the station and which cause significant nuisance (odors, pollution ...).

The process prepares the effluent in order to increase the efficiency of the commonly used subsequent treatment steps (lagoons, biological discs, activated sludge, settling digesters ...). It homogenizes the effluent entirely biologically. It requires no addition of additives. The homogenization cycle being fully regulated, it adapts to daily and seasonal variations in organic load and therefore requires no human intervention.

The process creates:
- on the one hand, an atmosphere particularly favorable to the development of the bacterial flora which participates in the natural degradation of biodegradable organic substances contained in the waste water,
- on the other hand, it gives the different materials that make up the effluent the obligation to find their position within this pretreatment cycle while awaiting irreversible physical and biological degradation.

The principle developed is based on the evidence that the effluent to be treated does not always have the same organic load, its variation is often significant, particularly in rural or tourist areas. Accepting all of the incoming organic matter (faecal matter, cellulose and others) in the primary basins creates a balance in the organic load and facilitates its homogenization. This phenomenon is amplified by hydraulic regulation.

Figure 1 shows the block diagram of the device according to the invention.

This device comprises a collector (1) which discharges the domestic effluent into one of the primary basins (2). This primary basin can be made of precast concrete or not, see plastic. It is of any shape (cylindrical or cubic). Its size will be of the order of 10 to 50 cubic meters. The number of primary basins depends on the number of inhabitant equivalent to be treated.

Each primary basin is compartmentalized by one or more permeable partitions (3) thus forming sub-basins (2a) and (2b). These partitions act as a filter and contribute to the homogenization of the effluent, thus promoting the rest of the purification cycle. They can be made in prefabricated patches or be an integral part of the structure of the primary basin.

The primary basin thus partitioned has the function of trapping, in one of the sub-basins (2b), the heavy particles at the bottom (sand and others ...) and the light particles on the surface (mosses). The partition will therefore be sealed in its lower part and in its upper part. However, it will be permeable (cells a few centimeters in diameter) in the middle to ensure the transit of the homogenized effluent from a sub-basin (2b) to a sub-basin (2a).

The sub-basin (2a) is provided with a hydraulic pumping system (4) and an effluent flow regulation. Pumping of the homogenized effluent can be done by means of one or more electric pumps placed in the sub-basins. The regulation of the flow makes it possible to recycle all or part of the effluent pumped within the primary basin as well as to transfer the effluent to the next stage of the treatment cycle (lagoons, biological discs, activated sludge, decanter-digesters ...). This regulation can be carried out by dimensioning differently the diameter of the pipes (5) and (6) of the hydraulic circuit for example eVou by integrating a closing device (7) (adjustable mechanical or electromechanical valves).

The movement of water generated by the reflux of the effluent within the primary basin makes it possible to reiterate the filtration of the effluent (reflux in a sub-basin (2b)), to avoid the sedimentation of heavy particles at the bottom of the sub basins (2a) and (2b) and ultimately ensure the homogenization of the effluent.

The regulation of the flow rate of the effluent to be pretreated can be manual, or as in the case of pumping, be assisted by a computer system composed of a programmable controller or a microcomputer (11) and an electronic interface ( 10). The entire hydraulic cycle can either be programmed by the user or deducted by the computer system which is based on the time of the day, the season, level measurements, quantities of volumes recycled and / or transferred to the stages of the treatment cycle. These various pieces of information are provided by level sensors (9) which indicate to the computer system the quantity of effluent received by the device and consequently the quantity to be pretreated. Security level contacts (8) indicate to the computer system the state of the pool (full or empty) in order to prevent any malfunction of the device.
