Abstract
Description
OPTIOUE FOCALISATRICE D'UN SPECTROPHOTOMETRE DE FLAMME. FOCUSING OPTIOUS OF A FLAME SPECTROPHOTOMETER.
The present invention relates to a high sensitivity flame spectrophotometer which can be used for the analysis of a gaseous composition containing several sought-after elements such as sulfur and phosphorus.
Usually, a flame spectrophotometer consists of a burner in which the combustion of a gaseous mixture comprising a stream of gas to be analyzed (for example air) and a stream of hydrogen, or other oxidant, is caused. so as to produce a flame whose light emissions are decomposable into a light spectrum whose analysis of the lines makes it possible to determine the nature and the concentration of the elements sought.
This breakdown of light emissions is carried out in a spectrophotometer which can involve - mobile interference filters scrolling past a
optoelectronic detector on which the radiation
is focused, - a static interference filter whose power
filter varies continuously depending on the length
wave, this filter being associated with a strip of
detectors (photodiodes), or - a dispersive optic (prism or network) allowing to
decompose light into a detectable light spectrum
by a mobile optoelectronic detection system or
fize, - an interferometer, associated with a processing circuit
performing a Fourier transformation.
In order to increase the sensitivity of flame spectrophotocteters, it was necessary to use tubular combustion chambers (sleeved flame), usually cylindrical, arranged coaxially with the spectrophotometer input optics.
It turns out that this arrangement, which is preferable to the solutions consisting in focusing the optics of the spectrophotometer perpendicular to the axis of the combustion chamber, nevertheless has the drawback of observing the totality of the flamine and of obtaining output of the detector (s), a signal having a high noise level.
This results from the fact that the flame generated by combustion is formed of two parts, namely a relatively illuminating dart and a plume in which are located light emission zones characteristic of the elements that one wants to detect.
Consequently, the spectrum obtained by focusing the light emission of the flame at the input of a spectrophotometer is largely disturbed by the light emission generated by the dart. The spectrum is then presented in the form of a continuum from which the characteristic lines of the sought-after components emerge.
The presence of this continuum implies the use of complex filtering means and makes it particularly difficult to amplify the detection signal delivered by the optoelectronic detectors of the spectrophotometer, to the level required for obtaining good sensitivity.
This problem manifests itself particularly in the case where, due to the weakness of the detected light signal, it is necessary to use photointensifiers, for example photomultipliers. Indeed, in this case, the detection of the continuum causes an increase in the noise of the photomultiplier, which degrades the performance of the assembly.
The invention therefore more particularly aims to solve this problem.
To this end, it offers a flame spectrophotometer comprising a burner having a tubular combustion chamber, in the area of which the flame to be analyzed is propagated, this chamber being situated in the axis of a coaxial window equipped with a focusing optics so as to focus the light radiation produced by the flame on the entry orifice of a spectrophotometric assembly which can use photointensification means.
According to the invention, this spectrophotometer is more particularly characterized in that the aforesaid focusing optic is designed so as to project the image of the dart of the flame in an area located upstream of the entry orifice of the spectrophotometric assembly and in that it comprises a mask of section substantially equal to that of said image, arranged in said zone to obscure the radiation emitted by the dart so that the entry orifice of the spectrophotometric assembly practically receives only the emitted radiation by the plume of the flame.
Advantageously, the above mask may consist of a ball held in the above area by means of a wire.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure l is a schematic representation of a
flame spectrophotometer according to the invention
Figure 2 is an intensity / frequency diagram
showing a spectrum with a continuum generates
by the dart of the flame and a corresponding spectrum
obtained thanks to the arrangements according to the invention.
dans laquelle est montée une lentille 10.In the example shown in FIG. 1, the flame spectrophotometer involves a tubular burner l comprising two coaxial nozzles 2, 3 of different diameters and axially offset from one another. These two nozzles 2, 3 define two successive chambers, namely - a combustion chamber 4 open on one side and referenced
on the other side by a bottom 5 crossed coaxially by
a gas inlet duct to be analyzed 6. This chamber
4 is also connected to an injection pipe
of hydrogen 7 which passes radially through the wall
longitudinal of the nozzle 2, - a stabilization chamber 8 into which the
combustion chamber 4, this chamber 8 being closed
on one side on nozzle 2 and on the other side by a
cover 9 having a coaxial circular opening
in which a lens 10 is mounted.
This stabilization chamber 8 has a lateral exhaust orifice connected to an exhaust circuit it provided with a turbine 12 actuated by a motor.
The lens 10 is designed so as to focus the light generated by the plume of the flame which propagates in the combustion chamber 4 on the entry slit 13 of a spectrophotometric assembly 14, for example of the conventional type involving an element dispersive 15 (socket, network, interference filter) and a detection system 16 which may include a strip of intensified photodiodes or a photomultiplier connected to a processing circuit 17.
The operation of this spectrophotometer is then as follows
The assembly of the two chambers 4 and 8 is put under vacuum by the turbine 12 so as to cause an aspiration of the gas to be taken from the intake duct 6.
Inside the nozzle 2, the flow of aspirated gas mixes with the stream of hydrogen injected so that at the outlet of the pipe 6, combustion is obtained, generating a flame which propagates in the combustion chamber.
This flame comprises a dart 18, of small dimensions but relatively bright, which is extended by a plume 19 extending over almost the entire length L of the nozzle 2.
It turns out that the emission of light rays characteristic of the elements sought are localized in well-defined zones of the plume 19.
Thus, in particular, the emission of the characteristic radiations of phosphorus takes place in an annular region Z1 situated in the middle part L / 2 of the combustion chamber 4.
On the other hand, the emission of the characteristic radiations of sulfur takes place in a zone Z2 of ovoid shape slightly offset towards the front of the burner with respect to zone Z1.
fente. In view of these observations, to overcome the light radiation generated by the sting 18 and therefore the continuum, the invention proposes - to adjust the lens 10 so as to obtain the image of the
sting 18 upstream of slot 13 and the image of the part
middle of the plume 19, at the level of the slot 13 of the
spectrophotometric assembly 14, and - to have a mask at the location of the image of the dart
18 'of the same dimension to stop the propagation of
light rays emitted by the sting 18 towards the
slot.
In this example, the mask 18 ′ consists of a ball held in position by a wire 20, the ends of which are integral with the fixed structure of the spectrophotometer.
Advantageously, the wire 20 will be mounted on a support 21 axially adjustable in position.
Figure 2 shows in solid lines the shape of a spectrum obtained without the use of the mask described above.
This spectrum includes a large noise continuum 22, from which the lines R1, R2 ... Rn emerge corresponding to the elements present in the gas composition.
La courbe en traits interrompus montre le spectre obtenu grâce à la presence du masque 18'.The curve in dashed lines shows the spectrum obtained thanks to the presence of the mask 18 '.
It is clear that this spectrum, whose peaks and feet clearly appear, is more easily analyzed numerically.
In addition, the absence of a continuum 22 allows the use of photo intensifier devices such as photomultipliers to the best of their noise performance.
