Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a validation device making it possible to authenticate a transaction carried out by means of a check. The validation is obtained by means of a confidential code deducted non-reversibly from the account number of the holder. Authentication of the transaction is done by affixing a key deduced non-reversibly from any information defining the transaction (account number of the issuer, receiver, amount, date, ...).
There are many methods to combat the fraudulent use of lost or stolen checks. For example, verification of the identity of the issuer, unreliable and unsatisfactory; consulting files listing stolen checkbooks, a fairly long technique for the recipient and often unreliable given that these files are updated periodically.
Not all of these techniques are entirely satisfactory.
The invention NO 89.09691 of Mr. MARGOT provides a solution to the drawbacks mentioned. The protection of checks therefore goes through several phases. First of all the bank or an authorized body calculates from an account number and according to a predefined algorithm a confidential code for each holder of a bank account. The bank transmits this code to its client. When a check is given to the recipient for payment, the issuer completes the check according to the usual methods. The recipient inserts the check into a device called a validator and invites the sender to type their confidential code on a keyboard, whether or not they are attached to the validator. The validator is equipped with a CMC7 character reading device (coded characters printed on checks determining the account number of the holder). It has an electronic circuit based on algorithms similar to those used by the bank for determine the issuer code from the account number on the check. When the two codes are identical, the transaction is considered valid by the validator. The validator then defines an authentication code which will be calculated from the account number of the sender and the receiver, as well as other information relevant to the transaction (amount, date, time), derived from a predefined algorithm and that neither the receiver nor the transmitter can know. In the event of inconsistency of the confidential code provided, the latter, the issuer, may redial its personal confidential code a certain number of times. In the event of consistency, the check is definitively validated and the transaction authenticated.
The present invention complements the validation technique described in Patent NO 89.09691.

FIG. 3 represents the back of a check processed by the post-marker validator to authenticate the latter and validate it. The front of the check having been written using conventional technique.
Figures 4 and 5 show the operations performed by the validator on the back of the check when the sender has entered his confidential code.
FIG. 6 represents the back of a check which, after validation, has received authentication by the post-marker validator.
According to Figure 1 the validator is in the form of a box containing a slide for introducing the check that the issuer has just written or have written.
The elements (9) and (15) are optical or magnetic readers of the information appearing on the check (account numbers of the issuer).
Element (4) constitutes a numeric or alphanumeric keyboard integral or independent of the validator used by the transmitter to enter its secret code. After viewing on the screen (5) of type with alphanumeric display, the check issuer will order validation. The printer (8) confirms the validation. The receiver enters using the keyboard (4) his account number, the amount of the check and the date which will appear on the back of the check in the form of a bar code. (Information other than the transaction amount can be directly taken into account and entered by the default validator).
An additive memory (2) stores all of this information.
This memory (2) is controlled by the microprocessor (12) which, at the request of the validator user, can modify the content of this memory (2). This function allows you to manage all transactions from one issuer to another and establish the human-machine dialogue.
The power supply (1) comes from the mains or from any other means (batteries, batteries). It is coupled to a buffer battery allowing the correct functioning of electronic circuits and in particular of memories in the event of a power failure. The function of a rechargeable battery (13) (always in charge) is to maintain the power supply to the register mixer (7).
The electronic interface (14) makes it possible to connect the validator with an external computer circuit consisting for example of a data server memorizing the numbers of the accounts reported by the bank, a modem, a computer, etc.
FIG. 2 shows the constituent elements of the mixer (7).
This mixer (7) has different registers (20), (22), (24) (33), and (36) which are initialized by the microprocessor (12) with the data contained in the validator. These data have possibly already undergone a processing (encryption, compression, coding ...).
The initialization is managed by the unit (31). The register (20) stores the account number of the issuer and additional information (date, amount, beneficiary number, etc.) is stored in the register (36).
The unit (21) is an electronic with algorithmic function. Under the action of a microprocessor command (12) it transforms the account number of the transmitter into a confidential code number which it will store in the register (22). This confidential code will be used to subsequently establish validation and authentication of the transaction. The code proposed by the customer is stored in the register (24).
After the introduction of this code into the register (24) the microprocessor (12) activates the electronic element (23) which compares the information contained in the registers (22) and (24). The microprocessor then activates the units (28) and (30) which act in a contradictory manner as a function of the result of the comparison in the module (23).
If the comparison is positive, the unit (28) is inhibited and the unit (30) becomes active. The account number stored in the register (20) added to the additional information from the register (36) is then transformed into another number via the unit (30), which is then stored in the register (33), and constitutes the authentication key for the validation of the check. If the comparison between theoretical and proposed code is negative, the unit (30) is inhibited, and the unit (28) becomes active. The unit (28) mainly consists of a down counter set to a maximum value by the manufacturer during an initialization sequence, and is decremented by a unit when a negative comparison appears at the output of the unit (23 A zero value in this down-counter is detected by the internal blocking unit (29) and the entire means (7) is then inhibited, preventing any new validation. The content of the counter is permanently saved using the saved power supply (13), and any interruption of this power has the effect of setting the down counter to zero, and inhibiting the mixer (7). Depending on the degree of sophistication of the integrated circuit emulating the unit (7), the supply of the down-counter can be integrated into the circuit. Resetting the mixer (7) is permitted by means of the units (25), (26) and (27). The unit (25) consists of an initialization key wired inside the mixer (7) and is changeable. The unit (27) is a register allowing to store a key of dimension identical to that contained in the unit (25). In case of equality between these two keys, a comparator (26) will authorize the loading of the counter (28 ) at a value chosen by the manufacturer.
The mixer (7) is independent of the validator; disconnected from the latter, it can be reset to introduce a new security key algorithm or to reload the down-counter (28). These operations are not the responsibility of the user, but of the manufacturer or his beneficiary.
Referring to Figure 3, we discover by way of example the back of a check, the front of which has been filled out by the sender. The information on the front of the check enabled the post-marker validator to print on the back the information necessary to validate and authenticate the transaction. Thus the readers (9) and (15) coupled to the printer (8) transformed the data encrypted on the check into "bar code". The account number (C) of the transmitter enabled the mixer (7) to calculate using algorithms the code of the transmitter which is stored in the registers (22) controlled by the microprocessor (12).
The code proposed by the customer on the keyboard (4) is memorized by the register (24). The arrival of this code allows the microprocessor to compare the data in the register (22) and (24) and to validate or not validate the authenticity of the check and to code it under a number depending on all the information printed on the back. Information is printed in alphanumeric form and in barcode form.
The mixer (7) makes it possible to define an authentication key (B) which appears on the back of the check and allows the post-marker validator to inform the beneficiary of the authentication and the validation of the transaction at level (F) . The date and amount can be used to determine the time of authentication.
FIG. 4 shows the various operations described above carried out for simple validation where the sender only enters his confidential code.
Figures (5) and (6) show the various operations such as entering the check into the validator which transforms, stores the amount (E) and the date of the check (D), transforms the account number of the 'issuer in confidential code (G) which will be compared with the code (A) entered by the issuer. The recipient will enter their bank code (1) and postal check account. The level (7) and the microprocessor (12) of the post-marker validator (V) will determine an authentication key (B) valid for this transaction which can be printed on the back of the check.
