Abstract

Alcohol content of vapour exhaled by the driver is assessed by a steering wheel or dashboard-mounted sensor (5), whose output passes to a comparator (6) receiving also a reference signal adjustable by potentiometer (R6). Comparator output, if the reference level is exceeded, operates a relay (7), effectively immobilising the vehicle (9). Additional changeover contacts extinguish a green LED tell-tale (D1) ('normal conditions'), and light a red one (D2) ('vehicle immobilised'). A third, yellow, tell-tale (D3) confirms supply is available to the unit through a fused battery connection (8) and a stabilised transistor circuit (R8,D4,C1, etc.).The LED's are dashboard-mounted; except for the sensor all other equipment is contained in a sealable box accessibly located, e.g. under the dashboard.
