Abstract

Polluted aqueous effluents can be treated in a centripetal flotation separator. Liquid for treatment (FC) is directed into a rotating flux (FT1), in a zone of the separator which acts as a cyclone (20). Heavy particles are separated. The rotating liquid stream passes through (FT2) a flotation tube (6) where gas bubbles are injected into the periphery of the stream to form a mousse which collects fine particles and carries them axially (A) along the tube. Sepn. occurs in a cylindrical vessel (30) into which effluent for treatment (FC) enters tangentially (4). A horizontal dividing plate (40) directs rotating flux (FT1) downwards to primary sepn. chamber (20) where heavy particles collect against wall of vessel and fall into the conical base (44). Collected solids (46) are protected from turbulence of vessel by a horizontal plate (48) in the centre and removed (FB) from outlet (28). Partially treated liq. moves (FT2) into the centre of the flotation tube (6) which has smaller dia. than the outer vessel. A compressed air stream (16) feeds annular space (14) between solid tube (12) and porous tube (6). Bubbles pass into liq. flux forming a froth less dense than the liq.. The froth passes to settling zone (34) where it separates from the liq. before being drawn off (24, 26, 18) carrying light solids and fats with it. Treated liq. passes into annular space (38) outside flotation tube and above the dividing plate and is removed (FP).
