Abstract

The vertebral implant is formed with two portions, one of which is transformable in shape as a result of formation from a shape memory material. A main body portion of the implant is mechanically and dimensionally stable, and has one or more cooperating accessories of the shape memory material. The accessories are activated by the presence of heat to change their shape to engage within one or more bone cavities by friction with the bone surfaces, thus locking the main body in position relative to a vertebra.
