Abstract

The brake pedal has the brake pedal arm mounted on a pivot, with a toothed segment (13) at the end opposite the pedal. The toothed segment meshes with a locking wheel (15). The locking wheel has a friction surface on its hub (16). A coil spring (20) is wound round the hub. One end of the spring is fixed (21a), while the other end is attached to an actuator (23). To lock the pedal the actuator displaces the end of the spring to tighten it round the hub of the locking wheel. The actuator is electrically operated, and moves linearly between two positions. An over-centre mechanism holds the mechanism in the locked position once the actuator has passed a threshold point. The actuator is controlled by a switch (25) mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle.
