On connait déjà depuis longtemps un procédé dénommé "fardelage" pour emballer une charge au moyen d'une bande étirable, déroulée depuis une bobine. Pour l'essentiel, ce procédé consiste à placer la charge sur un support rotatif, généralement horizontal, puis grâce à un déplacement relatif de la charge par rapport à la bobine, à entourer les faces latérales de cette charge dans la bande qui se déroule et qui s'étire simultanément. Lorsque toutes les faces latérales de la charge sont recouvertes, on coupe l'extrémité de la bande, que l'on solidarise ensuite sur la charge emballée par tous moyens appropriés.
