Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for impregnating electrolytic capacitors with solid organic electrolyte and more particularly those in which the base metal is aluminum.
Electrolytic capacitors are mainly used because of their large capacity in a reduced volume.
Currently, three families of electrolytic capacitors are present on the market. Aluminum and liquid electrolyte capacitors are found: the anode is aluminum and the cathode is an electrolytic liquid. There are also tantalum and solid electrolyte capacitors: the anode is tantalum and the cathode is a solid semiconductor electrolyte. Finally there are aluminum and solid electrolyte capacitors: the anode is aluminum and the cathode is a solid semiconductor electrolyte.
The last family mentioned recently experienced a certain development. Philips has developed several ranges of aluminum electrolytic capacitors with solid electrolyte. The anode is made from a rolled or folded sheet. The manufacturing process from a sheet anode includes the following steps
- cutting of aluminum foil,
- engraving of the sheet,
- folding of the engraved aluminum sheet in the case of radial capacitors or winding in the case of axial capacitors,
- anodizing the sheet to form a thin layer of alumina,
- formation of the solid electrolyte (manganese dioxide) by impregnation of a solution of manganese nitrate II followed by pyrolysis,
- installation of a cathode contact.
The manufacturing process for these capacitors is quite complicated. It includes an individual folding operation in the case of radial capacitors or individual winding in the case of axial capacitors. The step of formation of the solid electrolyte is the most delicate.
Several pyrolysis cycles are necessary (four in principle) and these cycles must take place under well-defined temperature and duration conditions. These are very difficult operations to master. Indeed, the basic product used is a very aggressive 60% manganese nitrate solution. The conversion to manganese dioxide must be very rapid. A post-formation operation is necessary to repair the layer damaged by the nitrogen dioxide resulting from the pyrolysis.
French patent FR 2 583 216 discloses a process for manufacturing electrolytic capacitors comprising a step of winding anode and cathode sheets and an electrolyte support on a large diameter wheel. This process has the advantage of the simplicity provided by the winding method. It provides components of the CMS type (components for surface mounting). The solid electrolyte used is preferably manganese dioxide, but the possibility of using an organic electrolyte is also mentioned. One can, for example, use the salts of 7, 7, 8, 8 - tetracyanoquinodimethane more commonly designated under the name TCNQ. Theoretically, these salts are very interesting, but their use as an electrolyte for capacitors poses many implementation problems.
According to the process, electrocrystallization is a step in the process which takes place after the first phase of oxidation of aluminum to dielectric alumina. During the electrolytic deposition of the TCNQ salt, there may be a slight attack of the dielectric so that it is necessary to reform the oxide layer after the electrolytic impregnation. During this operation carried out again in the conventional liquid of formation, oxygen bubbles are formed which are housed between the alumina layer and the electrolyte constituted by the salt of
TCNQ, resulting in loss of electrical contact for the final component.
The object of the present invention is to overcome this drawback constituted by the loss of electrical contact by reducing, or even eliminating, the release of oxygen. This can be obtained, according to the invention, by providing for the deposition of a TCNQ salt sublayer before the formation of the anode dielectric layer.
The subject of the invention is therefore a method of impregnating electrolytic capacitors with a tetracyanoquinodimethane salt (TCNQ), characterized in that it comprises the following steps
- deposit on an etched anode of a first conductive layer consisting of a TCNQ salt,
- formation of a dielectric layer on the anode, under the first conductive layer,
- Deposition on the first conductive layer of a second layer of said TCNQ salt to obtain a layer of solid electrolyte.
The invention will be better understood and other advantages will appear from the description which follows, given without limitation, accompanied by the appended figures among which
FIG. I illustrates a step in a process for obtaining anodes by sintering,
- Figures 2 to 4 are illustrative of the method of impregnating electrolytic capacitors according to the invention.
By way of example, the description will relate to the impregnation of electrolytic capacitors with aluminum, but the invention also applies to other metals playing the same role such as tantalum, niobium, etc.
The anode of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be obtained in different ways. It is possible, as taught in patent application FR 2 625 602, to collectively produce anodes by sintering aluminum on anode contacts cut from an aluminum connection strip. Thus, Figure 1 shows a connection strip 2 supporting an aluminum mass 4 obtained by sintering. To obtain individualized anodes, it suffices to cut the mass of aluminum between the anode contacts 1. This cutting can be carried out by cutting with a circular saw or with a YAG laser. The holes 3 drilled in a lateral zone of the strip 2 and regularly spaced are used for its drive by an appropriate device in the context of automated manufacturing.
The anodes obtained are "etched" anodes since the external surface that they develop is very large in comparison with their volume. It should be noted that the invention applies both to anodes treated separately and to anodes treated collectively. By way of example and to simplify the explanation, we will deal with the case of an isolated anode.
Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan, vol. 50, nO 12 , pp.According to the invention, a conductive layer consisting of a TCNQ salt is first deposited on the etched anode. The deposited layer is a TCNQ salt having passivating properties, being solid, with respect to aluminum. Many 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane salts have this property. Mention may be made, among others, of quinolinium-, N-methylquinolinium-, propylquinolinium,
N-methylacridinium- from TCNQ, as shown by the anodic polarization curves (see S. YOSHIMURA and M. MURAKAMI,
Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan, vol. 50, no. 12, pp.
3153-3157, 1977).3153-3157, 1977).
Figure 2 illustrates this stage of the process. In this figure, we see in profile the anode contact 1 and the sintered aluminum mass 4. We just deposit on the anode 6 constituted by the sintered mass 4 and the adjacent part of the contact 1, a layer 5 of the TCNQ salt chosen to constitute the electrolyte. The deposition can be done by cathodic reduction in situ of an organic solution consisting of a solvent in which neutral TCNQ has been dissolved and containing a support electrolyte, the cation of the support electrolyte and the dissolved TCNQ leading, after electrolytic dissociation , TCNQ salt audit. This deposition process was disclosed by patent application FR 2 627 008.
An organic conductive layer 5 is thus obtained. This electrodeposition is carried out for a relatively short period of time (less than 5 min) in order to deposit a small thickness of organic layer (approximately a few tens of pins for a current density less than 1 mA / cm2).
The next step in the process is to provide the anode with a dielectric layer of alumina on the surface of the anode.
This can be done in a manner known to those skilled in the art, by anodic oxidation. The dielectric layer thus forms under the organic layer previously deposited thanks to the oxygen-carrying nature of the organic layer 5.
For electrical isolation reasons, the dielectric layer 7 is developed so as to electrically isolate the organic layer 5 from the anode 6 and in particular from the anode contact 1> as shown in FIG. 3.
The next step consists in reinforcing the first organic layer deposited thanks to a new deposit. By a cathodic reduction longer than the first, a final organic layer of sufficient thickness is obtained. FIG. 4 shows the impregnated anode obtained where the reference 8 represents the final organic layer which will play the role of solid electrolyte in the capacitor. In this case, the cathodic reduction can be carried out with a current density less than 5 mA / cm2.
The sequence of operations required to obtain the final capacitor (cathode contact, coating, marking) does not pose any particular problem to those skilled in the art.
