Description

The present invention relates to environment heating systems using heated panels in interior surfaces of buildings.

Sn particular the invention relates to panels of this kind usable in suspended ceilings.

Panels of the type used to form heated suspended ceilings may include a planar electric heating element which is interposed between a sheet of thermally insulating material and a surface sheet of a panel. In use, the heat generated by the element is radiated through the material of the surface sheet of the panel. It is known that radiant heating systems of this type can be easily controlled and are more economical than conventional convection heating. It has also been found that such radiant heating systems provide a more uniform temperature distribution in service.

Although such systems provide a more adaptable and economical means of heating a room than, for example, a standard convection heating system, the cost and complexity of installation have prevented their widespread use in the past.

According to the present invention, there is provided a panel usable in a heated modular ceiling, the panel comprising a planar electric heating element interposed between a layer of thermally insulating material and a surface sheet of panel, characterized in that the surface sheet is with a decorative finish on its face which is visible when the panel is installed in a service position.

Panels according to the present invention
can be made using a pre-cut block of
insulating material such as rock wool, fibers
mineral or other synthetic foam compositions
ques. Uniform deposition of a suitable adhesive system
based on organic matter is carried out on the whole
of the block, and the flat electric heating element is
placed on it. The power cables of
the heating element are pushed through the block of
insulating material towards its rear part, and are provided
preferably suitable connectors to facilitate electrical connection when the panel is installed. Another deposition of the adhesive system is carried out on the heating element before the surface sheet of the panel is fixed to the top of the latter.

This surface sheet may consist of a sheet of woven glass applied between the upper part of the heating element with layers of adhesive, or it may be formed of any other suitable material. A decoration of the face can be carried out by coating, printing, painting or by another finishing process, and this operation is preferably carried out during the manufacture of the panel.

The invention also relates to a modular heated ceiling, comprising a number of panels of the aforementioned type, and possibly also panels without an electric heating element.

Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be highlighted in the following description, given by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which - Figure 1 is a partial sectional view of a heating panel according to the invention t and - Figure 2 is a perspective view, partially broken away, of the heating panel of Figure t.

In Figures 1 and 2 is shown a panel 10 usable in a heated ceiling. panel 10 includes a heating element 12
interposed between a thermally insulating block 14 and a
outer or surface sheet 16.

The heating element 12 can be of any type, but it is preferable for it to be of the type formed by printing a conductive resistive ink on a sheet of a plastic film, for example polyethylene terephthalate, and that it is applied against another dielectric layer of a sem lable composition. The insulating block 14 consists of a thermally insulating material suitable for use in the insulation of buildings, for example rock wool.

The heating element 12 is fixed to the insulating block 14 by a first layer 18 of an adhesive system based on organic materials. An electric current supply cable 20, connected to the heating element 12, is pushed through the insulating block 14 for later connection with an appropriate current supply. The face of the heating element 12 which is opposite to the insulating block 14 is then covered with a second layer 22 of the adhesive system, which extends beyond the edges of the heating element 12, substantially to the edge of the block insulator 14. The surface sheet 16 is then applied to the upper face of the second layer of adhesive 22 to complete the construction. The surface sheet 16 and the insulating block 14 are shown as having a rectangular shape. In another embodiment, they may have any regular geometric shape, although it is preferable to adopt a shape allowing an arrangement of the mosaic panels.

The surface sheet 16 is made of a material which is not affected by the heat generated by the heating element 12, but which is also capable of carrying a decorative finish so that no other finish is necessary.

A suitable dobby is a woven glass sheet that can be molded or embossed1 or otherwise textured, to form a decorative finish that may be necessary.
A decoration of the surface sheet 15 of the panel 10 can be carried out by coating, by printing, by painting or by any other finishing process. This can be done either during the manufacturing process or when the panels are placed in situ for adaptation to specific specifications, requirements or internal regulations.

The adhesive system based on organic materials which is used for fixing the components of the panel 10 has good thermal conductivity and gives good characteristics of heat transfer to the surface sheet 16. This has the effect of minimizing the heat losses. inside the panel 10 and increase the efficiency of the system. The adhesive system also has electrical insulation properties which are used by making the adhesive layers 15, 22 completely envelop the heating element 12.

The panels can be installed in combination with other panels consisting only of a thermal insulation block 14 and a surface sheet 16, the panels being held together by a single layer of adhesive. Non-heaters can be used to adjust the energy dissipation levels of a finished modular heated ceiling, provided only that insulation is provided in areas where less heating is required.

We realize that a modular ceiling using panels according to the present invention is simple to install and will constitute an economical and controllable heating system. Although the invention has been described in relation to panels usable in a modular suspended ceiling, it goes without saying that it is not limited to such applications.
