Abstract
Description
The present invention is in the field of hand tools and it relates more specifically to a sharpening device, called a display, intended to sharpen up instruments such as knives.
We know the traditional "sharpening stones" composed essentially of a piece of rock having abrasive properties with more fine, less fine grains; these elongated pieces were washed and used as is and held by hand. More recently, sharpening stones have been proposed which consist of a synthetic material similar to that of rotating grinding wheels. To the knowledge of the Applicant, we have never thought of eating such stones, or, if. we thought about it, we did not succeed because of an efficiency related to the relative fragility of the material which prohibits any rvetaffe or crimping thereof.
No doubt, we know of metal sharpeners, called rifles, made up of a finely ribbed cylindrical part e: inside of a handle and a guard; in these tools, the difficulty of manchage is resolved by the very solidity of the metal which makes it possible to produce a tang sinking into the handle in which it can be crimped, riveted or force-fitted. We understand all the interest of the guard considering the use and the destination of this tool which is to make the blades of knives very sharp.
The present invention proposes to provide the means for handling synthetic abrasive stones, which are the most fragile. It also proposes a ccnformation of the handle which on the one hand is suitable for the brittleness of the abrasive part and which, on the other hand, will constitute a guard avoiding cutting during sharpening.
According to the present invention a knife sharpening device, called "sharpener" or the like, of the kind consisting of an elongated abrasive part mounted on a handle is characterized by a general mining in that the elongated abrasive part consists of fine hard material particles agglomerated by means of a binder and molded and in that the handle consists of plastic material overmolded around a part of said elongated part.
It will be noted here that it is in the application which is made of the overmolding of a handle, to a piece of a fragile material that resides in the inventor's approach invented by the Applicant, insofar as this molding process resolves the difficulty associated with the brittleness of the material.
The resolution of the problem of brittleness will be further facilitated by the fact that the end of the handle situated at its junction with said abrasive part is shaped as a flange forming a "guard". We will see later how such a conformation contributes to the solution.
Advantageously also, and as is known for other materials, steel for example, on which a handle is overmolded, the part of said elongated abrasive part embedded in the plastic material by overmolding advantageously comprises at least one anchoring notch. again, we will take advantage of the overmolding so that the other end of the handle includes ur. eyecup intended to allow the suspension.
The present invention also relates to overmolding means, in other words an overmolding mold, of a sharpening device as described above, said overmolding means being of the "two-shell mold" type comprising a passage for "blade" at one of its ends, said means being generally characterized in that said passage comprises for at least one of the shells, a part, called a collar, sliding and guided in the direction in which the shells are close to each other, the sliding piece being biased in the direction of closing said passage by elastic means; it results from the presence of the elastic means, that variations in thickness of said abrasive piece are, when the latter is compressed in said passage, absorbed by said elastic means without risk of bursting of the abrasive piece; advantageously, the elastic means consist of a cushion of heat-resistant elastomers.
Advantageously and as mentioned above, the overmolding being carried out by injection, through at least one channel, said injection channel at least opens into the part of the cavity intended to form said collar.
The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a stripping device as described above, said method using one or more of the above means and being characterized mainly ei that between the stop and the end of the abrasive piece is placed at each overmolding a soft material such as plastic tape; preferably, the latter is at the highest possible temperature in its range of use.
The present invention will be better understood and details will be apparent from the description which will be given both of the product and of the manufacturing process, in relation to the figures of the appended plates in which
- Fig.1 (la, lbj illustrates from the front and profile a sharpener according to the invention, and
- Fig.2 illustrates in perspective a mold intended to handle the device of the previous figures.
In fig.l, a knife sharpening device, or sharpener, according to the invention consists of an abrasive part 1 in the form of an elongated piece made up of fine particles of hard material agglomerated by means of a binder, and molded, and of a handle 2 constituted by plastic material over-injected by injection around a part 3 of the elongated abrasive part 1; the end of the handle adjacent to the abrasive part, called "stone", is shaped into a collar 4 forming "guard"; part 3 of the stone embedded in the plastic material has an anchoring notch 5. Advantageously, the end of the handle 6 opposite the guard has an eyelet 7 which passes right through.
The drawings illustrate an embodiment, but it should be understood that an identical structure could apply equally well to a "stone" of circular section, to a handle of rectangular section, etc.
It is however important to note, as it appears on the drawing where part 3 appears in dotted lines that the section of this part embedded in the plastic material, although reduced compared to that of the visible part of the stone, must not be too thin due to the fragility of the "stone".
In FIG. 2, an injection mold with two shells 11 and 12 is carried as is known for the manchage of the metal blades of knives, a passage 13; according to the invention the section of this passage is deformable so as to be able to be adapted to slightly d -ferent stone thicknesses, thicknesses which it is d -: easy to make perfectly equal during the molding of the "stone "; to make the passage section adaptable to the dimension or thickness of the "stone", the passage is provided, preferably for each of the shells, with a sliding part 14, called collar, guided in the direction (arrow 15 ) according to which the shells are brought closer to the closing of the mold; the sliding part 14 is biased in the direction of reduction of the passage section, by elastic means such as an elastomeric sleeve 16.
According to another embodiment, the elastomer cushion and the sliding part are replaced by a single piece of PTFE.
On the shell 11 of FIG. 2 appears in hollow an imprint 17 of a half of the handle which comprises a slightly larger part 18, close to the passage 13 and intended to form the ring 4 it is in this part that a injection pipe 19; it will be noted that the injection pipe could still be multiple and / or etched in each of the shells.
There is shown diagrammatically at 20 a stop located in the axis of the passage 13, to receive in support the point of the "stone" 1; between the stone and the stop, there is at each overmolding operation a soft material such as a plastic tape 21; under the injection thrust the end of the stone will become embedded in the material of the ribbon without becoming damaged, which avoids risks of the "stone" bursting. Advantageously, the plastic material injected will be at the highest possible temperature in its range of use so as to have maximum fluidity allowing the lowest possible injection pressure and favoring the encrustation of the plastic material in the porosities of stone.
Although particular forms of embodiment of the product or implementation of the process have been described and represented, it should be understood that the scope of the invention is not limited to these forms but that it extends any product or process with the general characteristics set out above.
