Abstract
Description
"PROCèDE DE TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE PAR UNE TORCHE A PLASMA MICRO-ONDES,
OF HEAT TREATMENT WITH A MICROWAVE PLASMA TORCH,
AND TORCH FOR ITS IMPLEMENTATION "
The present invention relates to a method of heat treatment by a microwave plasma torch of the type in which a flame of generally annular shape is created around the plasma jet by ignition of a combustible gas, in particular hydrogen, mixture with oxygen, as well as with a microwave plasma torch intended for its implementation.
The main patent describes a process of this type in which the combustible gas and the oxygen are not changed beforehand before they enter the nozzle. However, this way of proceeding is inal adapted to the case where the combustible gas is hydrogen, because of the risks of explosion.
The object of the present invention is to make it possible to obtain without danger a plasma controlled by an oxyhydric flame (that is to say a hydrogen-oxygen flame) and, for this purpose, it relates to a process of the aforementioned type characterized in that the combustible gas and oxygen are only mixed around the plasma jet.
L'invention a également pour objet une torche à plasma micro-ondes detinée à la mise en oeuvre d'un tel procédé. Cette torche, du type comprenant une buse de sortie de gaz entourée à distance par un manchon, et des moyens d'alimentation de la torche en énergie hyperfréquence, la buse comprenant un conduit central relié à une source de gaz plasmagène et, autour de ce conduit, des moyens d'éjection d'un mélange de gaz combustible et d'oxygène, est caractérisée en ce que les moyens d'éjection comprennent deux passages reliés séparément l'un à une source de gaz combustible et l'autre à une source d'oxygène et débouchant tous deux à peu-près dans le plan d'éjection du gaz plasmagène;;
- le conduit central se termine par un plot en materiau réfractaire, notamment en carbure de tungstène, présentant un orifice central.The invention also relates to a microwave plasma torch designed for the implementation of such a method. This torch, of the type comprising a gas outlet nozzle surrounded at a distance by a sleeve, and means for supplying the torch with microwave energy, the nozzle comprising a central duct connected to a source of plasma gas and, around this conduit, means for ejecting a mixture of combustible gas and oxygen, is characterized in that the ejection means comprise two passages connected separately, one to a source of combustible gas and the other to a source oxygen and both roughly opening into the plasma gas ejection plane;
According to advantageous characteristics
- the two passages lead into a common plane perpendicular to the axis of ejection of the plasma gas, while the central duct opens slightly downstream of this common plane
- The central duct ends with a stud made of refractory material, in particular tungsten carbide, having a central orifice.
An example of implementation of the invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawing, in which
- Figure 1 is an end view, partially in cross section, of a microwave plasma torch according to the invention; and
- Figure 2 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, of the gas outlet nozzle of this torch.
The plasma torch shown in FIG. 1 is of the type described in the main patent and essentially comprises a waveguide 101 of rectangular section, connected at one end to a microwave energy source (not shown) and closed at its other end by an adjustable quarter-wave trap (not shown), and, in an intermediate transverse plane of the waveguide, an assembly 102 in the general shape of a T comprising gas supply conduits 103 to 105 which open into an outlet nozzle 106 having a general shape of revolution.
The conduits 103 and 104 are superimposed and pass through sealed openings in a small lateral window of the waveguide. The duct 105 is located in the extension of the lower duct 104 and crosses the small opposite side face of the waveguide with a seal. For the convenience of the description, assume that the axis of the waveguide is horizontal. It is the same for the axis of the conduits 104 and 105 and the part of the conduit 103 located inside the waveguide, while the nozzle 106 has a vertical axis XX contained in the plane of vertical symmetry of the waveguide and opens down.
The nozzle 106 crosses with a large clearance a circular opening 107 provided in the large underside of the waveguide; on the periphery of this opening is fixed the upper end of a sleeve 108 of axis X-X which ends in a rolled wing 109. The end planes of the nozzle 106 and of the sleeve 108 are more or less the same.
As seen in FIG. 2, the nozzle 106 comprises three separate chambers 110 to 112 in which the conduits 103 to 105 open respectively, and a horizontal lower end wall 113.
A central tube 114 extends along the axis X-X of the upper chamber 110 to the wall 113, in which it communicates with the central orifice 115, of axis X-X, of a cylindrical stud 116 of tungsten carbide. The latter is fixed to a seal in a counterbore of the wall 113 and protrudes slightly from the latter downwards.
Chamber 111, located under chamber 110, ends with a horizontal lower wall 117 pierced with a ring of holes. A series of vertical tubes 118 leave from the chamber 111, pass through the holes in the wall 117 with a watertight seal as well as a corresponding ring of orifices in the wall 113 and terminate in the lower end plane of the latter.
The chamber 112 has an annular upper part 119 surrounding the chamber 111, and a cylindrical lower part 120 extending to the wall 113 and traversed by the tubes 114 and 118.
The two parts of the chamber 112 communicate by a circular slot 121, and the lower part 120 communicates with the outside by a ring of orifices 122 centered on the axis XX and disposed radially between the central tube 114 and the tubes 118. The central tube 114 crosses the horizontal wall 123 which separates the chambers 110 and 111, as well as the wall 117, with a sealed joint, and is fixed in a sealed manner in the lower wall 113.
In operation, the conduits 103 to 105 are respectively connected to sources S1 of a plasma gas, for example of argon, S2 of a combustible gas, for example of hydrogen and S3 of oxygen, and the torch is supplied with power. in microwave energy. Thus, on the one hand, at the outlet of the pad 116, a central jet of argon plasma is obtained and, on the other hand, two concentric, substantially annular jets, one of hydrogen (internal jet), l other oxygen (external jet). The oxygen and the hydrogen do not languish after their exit from the nozzle 106 to form a combustible mixture which is ignited by the plasma and forms a sheathing flame thereof.
Thanks to the fact that the hydrogen-oxygen mixture takes place outside of the nozzle 106, there is no risk of explosion. In addition, the pad 116 of tungsten carbide allows the material to continuously support the high temperatures reached, and the projection of this pad beyond the wall 113 provides a peak effect favorable to plasma stability.
It is understood that although the torch described above is particularly advantageous in the case of an oxyhydric flame, it can also be used with fuel gases other than hydrogen, for example with a hydrocarbon. The use of an oxyhydrogen flame is particularly applicable to surface treatments requiring a flame which does not contain hydrocarbons (for example to the surface treatment of optical fibers) or to the destruction at very high temperatures of stable toxic chemical compounds.
As a variant, it is also possible to eject the combustible gas and the oxygen from the nozzle 106 through at least one ring of orifices in the end wall 113, one or two of these orifice opening directly into the lower part 120 of room 112 and one in two communicating with room 111 via a respective tube 118.
