Abstract
Description
ELECTRICAL WITH LOW CURRENT CONSUMPTION
The present invention relates to a device for permanently supplying an electrical circuit with low current consumption. This device finds an advantageous application in electronic circuits, in particular digital circuits, for the continuous supply of a data storage circuit when the device containing said circuit is not itself energized. The device of the invention aims at the continuous supply of electronic circuits with low current consumption, such as for example random access memories in CMOS technology, with a supply autonomy greater than one month in the absence of supply of the circuit by the main supply of the device.
The use of microprocessors and associated circuits such as random access memories is becoming more and more common, even in everyday devices. Thus, for example, there have been memory telephones for several years.
This memory is of volatile type and is used to memorize for a short period of time a number to call back, and also serves to memorize permanently - a set of telephone numbers constituting an electronic agenda of the subscriber. This electronic agenda must be stored on a random access memory, that is to say accessible both in reading and in writing, so as to be able to add, subtract or modify the telephone numbers contained in this memory.
However, no current, however weak, should be taken from the telephone line outside of periods of traffic. It is therefore necessary to add to the telephone set a device for permanently supplying the RAM.
According to known art, this permanent supply is achieved by the use of welded or snapped-on lithium batteries. This solution is not without significant operating problems.
A first problem is that the battery is put in place during the manufacture of the telephone set. This therefore results in premature and unnecessary consumption of the battery, which is reflected in particular by a problem in managing the stocks of telephone sets.
Furthermore, the life of a battery is very uncertain. It depends in fact on the consumption of the memories, which by themselves present a great dispersion, and it also depends very strongly on the temperature. The life of the battery is not known, it is replaced either too quickly, which leads to waste, or too late, which is detrimental to the integrity of the content of the memory.
In addition, when the battery is used, its replacement can be delicate and subject to a disturbance of the telephone set, especially if the replacement is made by the user. Finally, since lithium is a toxic metal, it is necessary to provide means for recovering used batteries to avoid any pollution.
The object of the invention is to remedy the drawbacks presented by the use of lithium batteries for the permanent supply of circuits with low current consumption, such as electronic memories. The invention also aims to guarantee a supply autonomy greater than one month in the absence of any other external supply, and to permanently preserve the supply to the circuit in the event that an external supply is liable to 'be substituted, more or less periodically, the feed device of the invention.
In the particular case of the memory telephone set mentioned above, the aim of the invention is to have a power supply device having a lifetime equivalent to the telephone set itself, thus eliminating any problem of replacing the Battery
Specifically, the invention relates to a device for permanently supplying an electrical circuit with low current consumption, said circuit comprising a current input terminal and a current output terminal, said device comprising series a photovoltaic generator comprising amorphous silicon cells and a diode
Schottky connected to the terminals of the circuit, said diode allowing the current delivered by said photovoltaic generator to pass, and an element for storing electrical charges arranged at the terminals of said circuit.
The role of the diode is to prevent any flow of current from the storage element to the photovoltaic generator.
The photovoltaic generator is made up of amorphous silicon cells, this type of cell has the advantage of having a practically constant efficiency, even under very low lighting. The Schottky diode is interesting because its direct voltage drop is very small.
According to preferred embodiments, the storage element consists either of a large capacity capacitor or of a nickel-cadmium accumulator
The characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly from the description which follows, given by way of illustration, but not limitation, with reference to the appended drawings, in which
FIG. 1 represents the schematic electrical circuit of the permanent power supply device of the invention,
- Figure 2 iLlustre a memory telephone set equipped with the permanent power supply device of the invention.
In FIG. 1, the reference 2 indicates the permanent power supply device of the invention and the reference 4 the electrical circuit with low current consumption to be supplied. This circuit includes a current input terminal E and a current output terminal S. For an electrical circuit consisting of a random access memory (RAM) in CMOS technology, the current consumption is very low. It is between 20 and 100 nA and the operating voltage of this circuit is between 2 and 5 Volts.
This circuit is powered, according to the invention, by a device mainly comprising a photovoltaic generator 6 -and a storage element 8.
The storage element 8 is placed at the terminals of the circuit 4. These two elements are powered by the photovoltaic generator 6; they respectively receive a current i and a current Ic. To avoid the discharge of the storage element 8 to the photovoltaic generator 6, a diode 10 is disposed between the photovoltaic generator and the storage element 8.
The conditions of use of circuit 4 can be very varied, in particular when this circuit is a memory of a memory telephone set. The latter can indeed be placed in a room, sometimes dimly lit. It is therefore important that
The photovoltaic generator even works in very low light.
Preferably, photovoltaic cells having a practically constant efficiency are used even under very low illuminations. One can for example use photovoltaic cells with amorphous silicon. Such a cell produces a current of 0.8 mA / cm2 and 0.69 V at 10,000 lux, and 8 C1A / cm and 0.57 V at 100 lux.
The storage element must be able to be loaded with a very low flow rate. It must therefore have an extremely low self-discharge current.
According to a first preferred embodiment, this storage element consists of a capacitor. This capacitor must have a high capacity and, in most applications, occupy a low volume. It is advantageous to use a Supercap type capacitor (registered trademark) produced by the company NEC, having a capacity of 0.1 F with an operating voltage of 5 Volts and occupying only a 3 volume of 4 cm. Such a capacitor can supply a current of 100 nA for one month, its voltage going from 5 Volts to 2 Volts.
Société SAFT.According to another preferred embodiment, the storage element can consist of a NiCd accumulator with very low self-discharge current, such as the accumulator of the "MEMOGUARD" type produced by the
SAFT Company.
With regard to the diode 10, it is desirable that its forward voltage drop is as small as possible. It is therefore advantageous to use a Schottky type diode whose direct voltage drop remains less than 0.2 Volt for a current of 1 mA.
The device represented in FIG. 1 provides a permanent supply for circuit 4.
When the light intensity is sufficient, for example greater than 100 lux in the case of the use of a photovoltaic generator with amorphous silicon, the photovoltaic generator simultaneously supplies power to circuit 4 at a voltage between 2 and 5 volts and maintaining the storage element in charge. In the absence of sufficient lighting, the supply current I of circuit 4 is
c provided by the storage element, and this for a period greater than 1 month in the case of operation in total darkness.
FIG. 2 illustrates the installation of the photovoltaic generator on a memory telephone set. The device of the invention carries out the permanent supply of the random access memory of the telephone set.
The photovoltaic generator is placed so as to receive the maximum illumination. It can be arranged for example on the front face of the telephone set 12.
In FIG. 2, the photovoltaic generator is composed of cells 14 of amorphous silicon 2 each having an area of around 1 cl, connected in series. The storage element (not visible in the figure) consisting of either a capacitor or a NiCd accumulator takes the place of the battery at
lithium used in known devices.
