Abstract

This composition consists of enzymes with endopeptide and proteolytic activities, such as protease B 500 and algicides and fungicides such as carboxylic acid and natamycin in a proportion approximately from 5 % to 15 % by weight relative to the weight of the coating (paint, varnish, coating, etc.) for protecting immersed bodies, comparative tests having shown its activity to be markedly superior to that of the conventional antifouling products without detriment to the surrounding environment.

Description

The subject of the invention is an anti-fouling composition more commonly called anti-fouling intended to be added to the various coatings (paint, varnish, plasticized coating and the like) which are applied to the surface of immersed bodies or placed in a highly humid environment in order to if not to slow down the adhesion and the development on the surface of these bodies of aquatic fauna and flora. It also relates to any coating containing an amount sufficient to be effective for this composition,
Products are already known, in particular paints and varnishes, called anti-fouling because they contain components, such as copper or copper alloys or salts, which are unfavorable for growth or very existence of aquatic fauna and flora. The choice of components of this kind known so far is based on the fact that they are poisonous materials For this reason, they are also materials hazardous to the surrounding aqueous environment in which they disperse so that the desired effect weakens over time. Thus they are pollutants from the natural environment; moreover, because of their dispersion, it is necessary to repeat the coating application operations quite frequently.

l'environnement.
The main object of the invention is to achieve an anti-fouling composition of a new type which combines the following qualities - high activity against aquatic fauna and flora which
adhere to submerged or wet surfaces, - long service life, - biodegradable in the aqueous medium therefore non-polluting for
the environment.

This object is achieved, according to the invention, when an anti-fouling composition is prepared containing a substantial quantity of enzymes with endopeptide activity and with proteolytic activity.

As examples of enzymes preferred in the context of the invention, there may be mentioned: protease B 500, protease A2, maxazyme HP, alkalase, neutrase and their mixtures. Advantageously, protease B 500 will be chosen which exhibits the maximum proteolytic activity of the alpha amylase, beta glucanase, alkaline protease (metalo-protease) type.

The enzymes indicated, and mainly those mentioned above, especially protease B 500, retain their properties in an aqueous medium with a high salt concentration such as sea water, at a temperature between 15 and 550 C; they are stable at pH values from 5.5 to 8.5 with maximum activity at pH 6.5 - 7.5.

They are compatible with the usual components of paints, varnishes, plastic coated, such as resins, solvents, thinners, pigments, catalysts, free radicals commonly used.

They efficiently proteolysate phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktonic larvae.

The enzymes can be used in the free state or in the fixed state using appropriate conventional supports (silica, membrane, polymers), the bonds being able to be of the covalent type.

The enzymes of the invention have an action which is exerted mainly against fauna and flora. If one wishes to treat submerged bodies, fearing a particularly marked development of algae and fungi, it is possible to add to enzymes at least one antifungal additive such as carboxylic acid or natamycin or their mixtures these bodies are preferable because of their strong algaecide and antifungal activity. We then observe a synergistic effect of these additives and enzymes.

The preparation of the composition of the invention requires some simple precautions; we first prepare the support when we plan to use one, which is often preferable, then add the algaecide (s), or homogenize, finally add the enzyme (s) and homogenize again. The mixture must be made phase after phase, without heating, in the most homogeneous way possible.

Algicides are used in less quantity than enzymes; for example, it can represent from 2% to 30% by weight of the weight of the enzymes, most often from 6% to 20%.

The composition of the invention is added to the coating (paint, varnish or other) of the bodies to be protected in a proportion of 5% to 15% by weight of this coating, so that finally the enzymes are present in an amount of 3 to 10 About% of the coating and algaecides in an amount of the order of several grams per kg of coating.

Micron 25 d'autre part.
Comparative tests were carried out between the composition of the invention and two commercial anti-fouling products considered to be particularly effective, known under the brands International Leader on the one hand and
Micron 25 on the other hand.

l'exploitation.
Various materials (steel, aluminum alloy
AG4, teak, sapelli, laminated wood, polyester, marine grade plywood, fiber cement) were used in the form of sheets of 30 x 30 x 2 cm which were covered on their two opposite main faces and suspended in seawater, in the port of La Rochelle, at a minimum immersion depth of 0.80 m, for a period of 9 months, from March to
December. After this period, the state of soiling of the main faces was assessed and classified as follows - Class 1: clean surface without deposit, - Class 2: very light deposit which would allow to continue
the operation of a boat, - Class 3: deposit and soiling requiring repair, - Class 4: significant deposit rendering the surface unsuitable for
exploitation.
