Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for coloring a light beam of white light and a device for carrying out this method.
For many scientific, artistic, industrial, medical applications, it is necessary to color a light beam in order to obtain a color in a given wavelength range.
The problem is to obtain the coloring of this beam continuously with all the desired colors, from a source having an extended spectrum.
Among the current solutions to this problem we can cite the following s - the systems which interpose in front of the light source or in front of the
light receiver of mechanical assemblies composed of filters
of different colors. These filters work by all or nothing and can
or not be superimposed. We thus obtain devices which allow
try to get a maximum of 5 to 6 colors if you don't want to spread
be an acceptable size and which, in any case, do not allow
not to obtain a continuous variation. We are therefore obliged to call
to several light sources whose light intensity is varied
(case of shows such as theaters) - experimental devices of which two will be briefly described
of them:
one is to illuminate a specific point, such as an object, with four
projectors with blue, yellow, red, green, and to do filters
vary the intensity of each spotlight according to precise rules
which associate with an intensity of the four sources give a color
well defined. This solution, interesting from an experimental point of view
is practically hardly applicable. Indeed, it requires first
four sources and so it is economically expensive and technical
In addition, apart from the focal point of the
four sources, the four components appear distinctly.
Finally, if the object moves, all the adjustments must be redone.
On utilise
demeurent très importants.the other device uses a special discharge lamp, the
response time is very short, i.e. the light intensity
radiated neuse does not present inertia compared to the command
of illumination, which is not the case with an incandescent lamp
what the filaments sense inertia visible to the eye. We use
the phenomenon of persistence. retinal impressions for
be for very short periods of time in front of color filters
parading in front of the source in synchronization with the intensity of
this one. By varying the lighting time in front of each wire
variable colors are obtained. This device is also
practically unusable because the sources which present the
required characteristics are limited to too low powers
and also because the whole represents manufacturing costs which
remain very important.
The process according to the invention brings to the problem a simple, effective and inexpensive solution.
This process essentially consists in placing on the path a coherent beam of white light, emitted by a source such as a projector for example, a colored diaphragm with variable aperture. By varying the aperture of the diaphragm, a light spot is obtained whose dimensions remain constant but whose color intensity varies according to the degree of opening of the diaphragm, with a regular distribution of the light in the spot.
- By interposing in front of the light beam a succession of diaphragms constituted by color filters, so as to obtain a mixture of colors, as the filters will flow a relatively wide bandwidth, we obtain, by addition of filtering, the equivalent of another filter. As the number of positions of each filter can be extremely considerable, a practically unlimited number of colored combinations is obtained.
The following method 17invention can receive many applications, among which we can cite: in the field of entertainment obtaining games and stage effects; in the paint and dye industry the precise identification of a color; in medicine, the analysis of the eye's sensitivity to different colors; in television the modification of the color of the light received by the cameras.
This list of possible applications of the process of the invention is in no way limiting.
The process according to the invention can be carried out at
means of very different devices. It can, advantageously, be
produced by means of a device, which, in accordance with the invention comprises at least one diaphragm constituted by two colored filters arranged symmetrically
around the light beam to be colored, on
which act means allowing their reciprocal displacement
to make them occupy any desired reciprocal position, except
using direct or programmed command.
According to a characteristic of the invention, the filters are soli
pair of supports mounted on a raceway and supported in
view of their reciprocal displacement, by any means whatsoever agreed
ble as target or worm, powered by a re electric motor
versible with direct or programmed control.
Some of the possible forms of
realization of the invention, being clearly specified that it is only
non-limiting examples and that all other proportions and
provisions could be adopted outside the scope of the invention.

In what follows, the application of the invention to the field of the spectator will be discussed. However, it should be understood that this is only one possible application alongside others such as those mentioned above, of the invention.
The colored diaphragm, of variable opening, which, according to the process according to the invention, must be arranged in the path of a beam of white light is, in the example treated essentially consisting of two colored filters 1, la, interposed on the path of the light beam shown schematically in 2, emitted by a conventional projector.
Each filter is mounted on a frame 3, 3a. The chassis 3, 3a are made integral with carriages 4, 4a rolling, by rollers, or the equivalent, 5 on the raceway 6a that has a housing 6 in which are housed the means for entraining the carriages 4,4a .
These means consist, in the embodiment following FIG. 1 in a cable 7 fixed at 8 on a drum 9 wedged on the shaft of an electric motor 10 with reversible direction of travel.
The drive cable 7 is fixed at two points 11a, lib, symmetrically opposite, on the carriages 4, 4a. I1 passes over idler rollers 12, 13.
The control of the motor 10 is designed so as to allow the filters to occupy any reciprocal position whatsoever desired for obtaining the desired effect, with the possibility of locating this position and reproducing it at will. For this purpose, the motor 10 can be connected, for example by a potentiometer 11, to an electronic dtasse ~ rvissement provided with a control console (not shown).
The device shown in FIG. 2 is identical in design to that of the device which has just been described with reference to FIG. 1.
This mechanism uses two butted endless screws 14, 14a with inverted pitch, helping each other in opposite directions, the screw 14 the carriage 4, the screw 14a the carriage 4a. The screw system is driven in rotation by the motor 15 accompanied by a digital counter 15a housed in a support 16 embedded in the housing 6. The visl4 passes into a support 17 fixed on the housing 6. Each screw is made integral of the carriage which it centers with a threaded part such as 18 in which it passes and which is fixed to the corresponding carriage. The control of the drive motor 15 of the screws is the same as that described with regard to the form of embodiment of FIG. 1.
In practice, in the application envisaged in the examples above, it is necessary, in order to obtain colors of almost unlimited shade and intensity, to place successively on the tra 3 and of the light beam a plurality of devices according to the invention
for example three - each filter using a basic color such as yellow, red and blue.
Fig. 3 shows, by way of example, the adaptation, on a headlamp of which we see in 19 the trace of the objective, of three devices A, B, C, according to the invention, mounted superimposed on a base plate 20 fixed, preferably removably, by any suitable means on the projector.
The three devices are regularly angularly spaced 120 on the plate relative to the projector lens.
With a set of the kind shown in FIG. 3 and by superimposing a device A with a red filter, a device B with a blue filter, and a device C with a yellow filter, filters are obtained for a given reciprocal arrangement in each device - for the arrangement of the filters according to FIG. 4, a domi color
yellow nante, - for that according to Fig. 5, a predominantly light amber color, - for that according to FIG. 6, a predominantly purple color, - for that according to FIG. 7, a predominantly light purple color, - for that according to FIG. 8, a predominantly light blue color.
In general, by varying the number of devices, the reciprocal positions of the filters in each of them, it is possible, according to the invention, to obtain nuances of color in practically unlimited numbers.
As for the angular distribution of the devices relative to the objective, it is necessary and sufficient that it be such that it does not result in an attenuation of the light intensity.
