Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to electrochemical generators of the type comprising an anode constituted by a highly reducing metal or metal alloy, a cathode constituted by a reducible material and a liquid or solid electrolyte essentially anhydrous.
The need for electrochemical generators, able to work as well at low temperature (T> -800C) as at ordinary temperature or at high temperature (T 4 4000 C), to give a high tension and to deliver a great density of current is done moreover in addition to feeling.
Tel n'est cependant pas le cas de l'ammoniac liquide qui est un solvant pouvant dissoudre des sels jusqu'à des concentrations de l'ordre de 10 M.Up to now the use of non-aqueous solvents does not seem to have resulted in practical terms, particularly because of the low solubility of electrolytes, which leads to high strengths. However, this is not the case for liquid ammonia, which is a solvent that can dissolve salts up to concentrations of the order of 10 M.
Some of these salts lead, with NH3, to the formation of ammonia either liquid or solid.
The purpose of the present invention was precisely to develop such electrochemical generators of the type defined above, by using electrolytic media consisting of ammoniacates.
According to the present invention, this type of electrochemical generator is characterized in that said electrolyte is constituted by at least one ammoniacate of at least one salt of a cation of the metal of the anode or of a cation of a metal. more reductive than the metal considered at the anode.
According to other characteristics of the invention, the metal or metals of the metal alloy of the anode and the metal cation (s) of or ammoniacate (s) is or are chosen among the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and aluminum, and the salt (s) of or ammoniacate (s) is or are selected from halides, such as bromides, chlorides and iodides, as well as perhalogenates, such as perchlorates, as well as thiocyanates and, in general, salts containing anions which are difficult to reducible (which are not reduced by the metal or alloy of metals of the O-pole) and which are also difficult to oxidize (which are not oxidized by the material (s) composing the pole) such as chloroaluminates and fluoroborates.
The use of such ammoniacates as electrolytic media provides highly conductive media, liquid or solid, and can be completely dehydrated. Such electrolytic media further have the advantage of having a very wide range of operating and use temperatures ranging from the freezing point of ammonia to temperatures that may be greater than about 4000C.
Globally, ammoniacates possess the essential properties of ammonia, but also have a number of particularly decisive advantages in the field of their application as electrolytic media. Thus, the ammonia decomposition pressure is considerably lower than the vapor pressure of pure ammonia at the same temperature.
In addition, unlike ammonia, they do not dissolve very reducing metals such as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and aluminum that can be used as anodic material. It will be noted, for example, that lithium is absolutely not soluble in ammonia, liquid lithium perchlorate, nor sodium in liquid lithium perchlorate ammoniacate.
It should also be noted that the ammoniacates are anhydrous and therefore do not decompose the metals, such as sodium and lithium used at the anode, to give hydrogen and the corresponding metal hydroxide.
Finally, it should be noted that the metals do not react, or practically not, that is to say, infinitely slowly, on the ammonia molecules. Such a reaction would indeed require the presence of catalysts to lead to the corresponding amide.

It should first be emphasized that the present invention avoids the inconvenience resulting from the property of ammonia from dissolving reducing metals such as alkali and alkaline earth metals. This property of ammonia, prohibiting the production of electrochemical generators without separate compartments, is discarded when the ammonia is in the presence of a large quantity of a salt whose cation is the same as that of the reducing metal or is the cation of a metal more reducing than the metal or metals used at the anode which is precisely to avoid any dissolution or other parasitic oxidation-reduction reaction.
The ammoniacates used in the context of the present invention are liquid or solid addition compounds associating one or more molecules of one or more salts with one or more ammonia molecules.
It is therefore a kind of hydrate-like compounds in which the water molecules are replaced by ammonia molecules.
Ammonia is very similar to water for all the properties that give this liquid its remarkable position among all solvents. If ammonia dissolves less well, in general, the salts than water, it is superior to all other solvents.
The properties of water and ammonia are summarized in Table I below.

<tb><SEP> Ammonia <SEP> Water

The abnormally high boiling point of ammonia is the index, as for water, that ammonia can form hydrogen bonds. Substances which are capable of forming hydrogen bonds with ammonia are therefore very soluble. The basic character of ammonia is also responsible for the solubility of certain compounds. Often it is difficult to distinguish the effects due to the basicity of ammonia from the effects due to the tendency to form hydrogen bonds; for example: for the solubility of phenols. A phenomenon related to the basicity of ammonia is its tendency to coordinate the ions of transition metals such as Ni2 +,
Cu2 +, Zn2 + and Ag. In general, the salts of such metals are very soluble in liquid ammonia.
To illustrate the remarkable solvent property of ammonia, mention will be made hereinafter merely indicative values expressed in grams of dissolved salt per 100 g of liquid ammonia 250C.

The dielectric constant of ammonia, equal to 22 at its boiling point (-330C), is considerably lower than that of water, 80 to 200C, but higher than that of acetic acid for example, 6.6
As expected, the solubilities of ionic salts in ammonia are intermediate between those in water and those in acetic acid, except for salts whose anions are highly polarizable because of
London. Some solubilities fairly representative of each of these solvents are grouped in Table III below.

In this Table III also includes hydrazine, solvent as basic as ammonia, but a much higher dielectric constant (52 to 200C).
Liquid ammonia can be considered as a highly concentrated solution of a mineral salt in liquid ammonia. The ratio of the number of salt molecules to the number of ammonia molecules depends on temperature and pressure. For a saturated solution, at a given temperature, the dissociation pressure makes it possible to assess the link between the ammonia and the compound which is associated with it. One can also take into consideration the heat of formation.
Consequently, very soluble mineral salts in liquid ammonia will give liquid ammoniacates if the solution, saturated or not, is in equilibrium with the gaseous ammonia under a pressure much lower than the saturation vapor pressure of this gas at the same temperature. . This is for example the case of ammonium thiocyanate. The appended FIG. 1 represents the saturation vapor pressure of the ammonia and the pressure of this same gas in equilibrium with the saturated solution of thiocyanate as a function of the temperature.
The liquid ammoniacates that may be considered the most interesting in the context of the present invention are those for which the ammonia pressure is less than or equal to an atmosphere at ordinary temperature. By way of example, mention will be made below in Table IV of some examples of salts illustrating the stability of liquid ammoniacates.

It will be noted that there are also other liquid ammoniacates in the vicinity of the ordinary temperature or at higher temperatures. Thus lithium perchlorate gives a liquid ammoniacate at ordinary temperature. Moreover, aluminum halides which absorb ammonia with a large amount of heat lead to liquid ammoniacates at temperatures above 1000C.
As in the case of hydrates, there are ammoniacates in the solid state and any salts that give liquid ammonia can give solid addition compounds with the ammonia molecules.
The solid ammoniacates conduct the current and thus serve as solid electrolyte in the context of the present invention. They can in particular be used in the sintered state.
X = Cl, Br, et
1 4 z 4 4. As examples of solid ammoniacates that can be used as electrolytic material, mention may be made of lithium halides of formula Lix, zNH3 with

<tb><SEP> Ammoniacates <SEP>#<SEP><SEP> = <SEP> Temperature <SEP> of <SEP> Dissociation

Other solid ammoniacates, such as aluminum halide ammoniacates for example of AlI3 and
AlCl3, may also be mentioned. It will be noted in particular that aluminum chloride makes it possible to obtain a very stable ammoniacate of formula AlCl 3, 6NH 3. The latter, however, loses a molecule of ammonia around 1800C to give AlCl3, 5NH3 which melts at about 3800C and ends at 4500C.
Other examples of ammoniacates will appear on reading some particular examples of generators mentioned below.

PILE : Na/AMMONIACATE D'IODURE DE SODIUM/(SN)
x
BATTERY: SODIUM IODIDE / (SN) Na / AMMONIACATE
x
Amiodiacates of sodium iodide of formula
NaI, xNH3 have proved particularly interesting as electrolyte, especially because they are very good conductors. The ammonia vapor pressure of these compounds is considerably lower than the saturated vapor pressure of ammonia at the same temperature. Ammoniacates of sodium iodide can be either in liquid form or in the form of a gel. Thus at ordinary temperature, the sodium iodide ammoniacate is liquid between the two limiting compositions NaI, 3NH3 and NaI, 3.5 NH3. Beyond and beyond these two boundary compositions, it is a highly conductive gel, just like liquid ammonia. Of the Board
VI below, it appears that the ammoniacate NaI, 3,3NH3 is particularly interesting.Il can also be used in a temperature range of -800C to + 800 C.

In such an electrolytic medium, rich in Na ions, the sodium is not soluble and does not react with ammonia. This metal may therefore constitute the anode, for example of a battery without a compartment. As a cathode material, for example sulfur polynitride (SN) x, which is also insoluble, has been used. Sulfur, soluble but reacting on NH3 has not been retained in practice. Sulfur polynitride, which can be used pure or in admixture with graphite, is a synthetic mineral polymer which exhibits a metallic-type conductivity at room temperature, of the order of 103Ω lem 1. It can give insertion compounds with bromine (reversible), iodine bromide (IBr) and alkali metals (partially reversible).
The use of sulfur polynitride as cathode material and of sodium as anodic material leads to excellent practical results, and in particular makes it possible to obtain primerable batteries using sodium iodide ammoniacate. Indeed, the ammonia being liquid under pressure, as soon as the temperature is higher than -330C, its injection, at the moment when one wants to dispose with certainty of the energy of a generator, is easy in a cell containing the electrodes and the salt (or mixture of salts) that will (or will) combine with the NH3 molecules. The injection of the ammoniacate (or mixture of ammoniacates) into the cell containing the electrodes can be provided.
In oxidizing sodium iodide ammoniacate
polished, a sulfur polynitride electrode has a resting potential of + 0.3 V (relative to Ag / Ag +).
From this potential, we observe the growth of a reducing wall and an oxidation wall (see Figure 2).
Leur différence de potentiel (qui est égale à la f.e.m. de la pile en circuit ouvert) est de 2,4 V. An electrode of (SN) and a sodium electrode dipping in NaI, 3.3 NH3 not connected to each other do not react on the solvent Their potential difference (which is equal to the emf of the battery in open circuit) is 2 , 4 V.
This potential difference is also the same as the + pole constituted by a compressed electrode of (SN) dispersed in graphite, by S4N4 dispersed in graphite, or even by graphite alone. In contrast, the characteristic curves, current voltage, have a substantially different appearance (see Figure 3).
Thus, the power available at each voltage is much higher when the cathode consists of (SN) x dispersed in graphite. In the case of (SN) x pure, it seems that a saturation phenomenon plays.
With (SN) x pure or (SN) x dispersed in graphite at the + pole, it seems that we can have a specific specific capacity greater than 40 Ah / kg, a specific energy greater than 80 Wh kg. indeed, if, as is very likely, sulfur-containing compounds are formed with the sodium polynitride, the surface / mass ratio can be increased by far exceeding the capture of 0.1 sodium atom per SN unit. number currently measured for a crystal of (SN) x cubic of a few mm sides and thus increase the specific energy in the same proportions.
The discharge curves in a 1000 Ohm resistor of cells consisting of (pure SN, or (SN) x dispersed in sintered graphite, at pole 6), and sodium at pole e show that the lifetimes per unit of mass and for an identical surface are of the same order of magnitude for (SN) x pure as (SN) x dispersed in graphite. For S4N4 dispersed in graphite the service life is much lower; furthermore, with this cathode material the current and the voltage are not stable (see Table 7).

In anhydrous sodium iodide ammonia, the behaviors of sulfur polynitride (SN) (pure or dispersed in graphite) and sodium, for which no passivation effect was observed, have made it possible to construct a bootable battery. voltage of 2.4 V which is significantly higher than the theoretical voltage of the sodium-sulfur cell which is only 1.85 V. The possibility of using this battery in a wide range of temperatures from -800C to + 800C, with high current densities, without risk of explosion, makes it particularly attractive.

Of course, the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but it is perfectly possible, without departing from the scope of the present invention to imagine a number of alternative embodiments. Thus, for example, the cathode material may be constituted by intercalation products.
