Abstract

Material for prodn. of animal litter comprises wood shavings derived from untreated resinous wood, the shavings having thickness of 5-15 mm, a length of 5-60 mm and a width of 5-30 mm. The material absorbs liqs. without sludge formation, exhibits a high degree of evaporative exchange with the atmos. combines with solids to form a coherent mass, and has a significant deodorising effect.

Description

The present invention relates to a material based on natural wood chips suitable in particular for making animal bedding.

The materials currently commonly used to make litter boxes for animals, whether based on straw or various plant materials, or even synthetic materials, have a drawback mainly due to their absorption power. Either they do not absorb liquid manure enough, in which case care must be taken to change the litter boxes and clean soiled rooms (boxes, stables, etc.) as often as possible for obvious sanitary and hygienic reasons, or they absorb these droppings and form sludge which eventually supersaturates which does not avoid having to carry out often, as in the previous case, the same frequent cleaning. In addition, in either case, solid droppings remain as they are; they are eliminated only by changing the litters, their accumulation cannot be tolerated, on the one hand for the comfort of the animals and their sanitary state and, on the other hand, because of the harmful and / or unpleasant odors which result.

However, the present invention overcomes these drawbacks and provides a material suitable for making animal bedding which does not require frequent changes of the latter due to the fact that this material has the property, on the one hand, of absorbing liquid excrement. without sludge formation, while having a high power of exchange with the atmosphere by evaporation, on the other hand to combine with solid excrement to form a coherent relatively homogeneous mixture and finally to present a significant deodorant power.

The material according to the invention having all of the above properties is characterized by the fact that it is based on natural forest wood chips (which have not undergone any physical or chemical treatment) which is essentially resinous and which presents in the form of shavings in strips each having a thickness of 5 to 15 mm, a length of 5 mm to 6 cm and a width of 5 mm to 3 cm. These properties are all the more marked when the above dimensions are respected and the content of softwood is high, the optimum result obviously being obtained with chips exclusively from untreated natural forest softwood.

In practice, the strip chips according to the invention can be obtained by any mechanical means known per se of the cutter, slicer and the like type.

With such a material, it has been found quite surprisingly that the period of use of the litters can reach 15 to 21 days without requiring any change. Because of its nature and the structure of the particular elements constituting it, this material retains all the excrement which, by the only movements, displacements, trampling of the animal, give a flexible and crumbly mixture, practically homogeneous, without formation of plaques or mud blocks. This results in the formation of a very rich manure due to the fact
a) that the chips absorb and retain all the essential elements
b) that the shavings also contain an interesting quantity of fertilizing elements (nitrogenous elements, minerals, cellulose decomposition products, etc.).

In addition, it is unexpectedly found that this manure is practically free of odors. Tests have in fact shown that with slurry or pig litter (taken as a reference for environments known to have a very strong odor and pollutants), any unpleasant odor was definitively eliminated after a few hours.

It is therefore easy to see the advantage of the material according to the invention: in the field of animal husbandry (ranging from the breeding of small animals such as birds such as quail to that of larger animals such as sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, etc.), the grain size is chosen according to the weight of the animal with thicknesses of litter layers ranging from 5 to 15 cm. In the field of agriculture and culture, there is a material rich in essential elements and fertilizers.

It goes without saying that the present invention has been described for purely explanatory and in no way limitative and that any useful modification may be made without departing from its scope.
