Abstract
Description
The present invention relates generally to an electric soldering iron and relates more particularly to a device intended for heating a part constituting the tip of the soldering iron.
Figure 1A is a front sectional representation of an essential part of an electric soldering iron of the prior art and Figure 1B is a front sectional representation of an essential part of another electric soldering iron prior art. The two soldering irons are examples of a soldering iron in which a ceramic heating element is used. The heating element is arranged in a heat conducting element, in a position such that the heating element is in contact with the conductive element over a longitudinal extent of the latter, the heat conductive element being produced in one piece with a purlin 3, in the longitudinal extension of the purlin, and consisting of a metal having an excellent thermal conductivity The soldering iron shown in FIG. 1A is thus constructed so that a ceramic heating element 2a, constituted by a body which is generally cylindrical and hollow, is enclosed concentrically in a metal sheath 1 and so that a heat conducting element 3a in the form of a round rod is fitted inside the hollow part of the heating element 2a, while being in contact with the latter. Under these conditions, one can heat by effect
Joule Ilraent heater 2a, thereby heating the heat conducting element 3a, by tensioning connection wires 4 connected to terminals (not shown) arranged in the heating element 2a. In this case, a resistance pattern printed (not shown), producing heat, used to constitute the heating element 2a above, is formed in the thickness of the wall of the cylindrical ceramic body. On the contrary, the electric soldering iron shown in FIG. 1B is constructed in such a way that the heating element 2b is formed in the form of a round rod or a hollow cylindrical body and is introduced inside the cavity of the heat conducting element 3b, cylindrical and hollow, so that the element 2b is in contact with the element 3bo In this latter embodiment, the heating element 2b does not have a structure essentially different from that of the previous embodiment, and reference is made to US Pat. No. 4,035,613 and the accompanying drawings with regard to the details relating to the heating elements of the kind described above.
The electric soldering irons of the prior art have the structure described above and the ceramic heating elements of cylindrical and rod-shaped, 2a and 2b, are characterized in that they have by themselves mechanical strength high and in that they have a reduced size. Faced with these advantages, they however have a drawback with regard to their manufacturing methods, this drawback consisting in the fact that the elements 2a and 2b are manufactured in such a way that after that a heat-producing resistance pattern, which provides the resistance value necessary for the electric soldering iron, has been printed on the surface facing an upper substrate or a lower substrate constituted by a ceramic plate , such as alumina, beryllium oxide or the like, the substrates are bonded to form a pair of upper and lower substrates and are given a cylindrical or rod shape so as to present nter the specified outside and inside diameters, and are subjected to firing. Therefore, in comparison with an electric heating element in the form of a wafer, the heating elements 2a and 2b are more complex as regards the manufacturing operations, they have a lower manufacturing yield and they have a higher cost. Another disadvantage is that by inserting the heating elements 2a and 2b as described above in the heat conducting elements 3a and 3b, thermal expansion as well as the difficulty of manufacturing the heating elements 2a and 2b means that '' it is not possible to mount these in such a way that the heat conducting elements 3a and 3b are brought into completely tight contact with the ceramic heating elements 2a and 2b, therefore the heat which is produced by the ceramic heating elements 2a and 2b is not transferred sufficiently to the heat conducting elements 3a and 3b, which means that the heat losses increase and a longer heating time is necessary for the soldering iron to reach a temperature high enough to make welding possible, after switching on the heating elements.
The invention provides an electric soldering iron comprising a heat conducting element formed integrally with a part constituting the tip of the soldering iron, this element being in the longitudinal extension of the tip, a diametrical slot formed in the element along the length thereof, from its rear end, and a heating element in the form of a plate inserted into the slot and held in the latter.

The invention will be better understood on reading the following description of an embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example. The following description refers to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1A is a front view in section of an essential part of an electric soldering iron of the prior art,
FIG. 1B is a front view in section of an essential part of another electric soldering iron of the prior art,
FIG. 2A is a sectional front view showing, in part, an electric soldering iron corresponding to the invention,
FIG. 2B is a perspective representation showing, in disassembled form, an essential part of the electric soldering iron corresponding to the invention.
In FIGS. 2A and 2B as in FIGS. 1A and 1B, the mutually corresponding elements are designated by the same reference characters. In the soldering iron of the invention, shown in FIGS. 2A and 23, a heat conducting element 3c formed integrally with a tip 3, in the longitudinal direction of the tip, is placed in a sheath of metal 1 and a slot 5 opening diametrically in the heat conducting element 3c is formed continuously, in longitudinal direction, from the rear end of the heat conducting element 3c, up to a region located near the front end of the element 3c. A wafer-shaped heating element 2c is inserted and held in the slot 5.For the wafer-shaped heating element 2c, a ceramic wafer-shaped heating element is preferably used as follows: specified resistance pattern, producing heat, on a layer of uncooked ceramic and additionally covering the printed ceramic layer uncooked with another layer of uncooked ceramic, or covering the printed ceramic layer with a layer insulation performance, and the structure thus obtained is then baked. However, in addition to the heating element of the type described above, it is possible to use an electric wire heating element in the form of a wafer, in which a wire in nidltroee alloy is bdinF auixz of an insulating plate and is covered with an insulator constituted by a plate of mica.
We can also have additional details on the ceramic heating element in the form of a wafer by referring to patent JA 10 ci27 / 1977 and to patent DT 2 548 019.
As a preferred embodiment of the slot 5, there is shown an opening having precisely the shape of a slot formed diametrically in the heat conducting element 3c but, optionally, one end of the slot 5 can be opened, as shown, or the other end of the slot 5 can be closed inside the heat conducting element 3c. In summary, the slot 5 can be made in a form such that it has a certain degree of elastic retaining force to hold the heating element 2c inside it, and to ensure that the thermal expansion of the slot 5 is slightly greater than that of the heating element 2c, when the conducting element heat 3c is subject to expansion, or it can be produced in a form such that it allows or absorbs a normal difference in expansion between the heating element 2c and the heat conducting element 3c, using for this slot 5 a width su ffisante to allow free insertion of the heating element in the form of a Zc plate. In FIGS. 2A and ZB, the reference 4 designates connection wires. The heating element in the form of this plate 2c is inserted and held in the slot 5 of the heat conducting element 3c which is formed in one piece with the fault 3.
Therefore, the heat produced by the heating element 2c is transferred with a high thermal efficiency from the two surfaces of; The heating element 2c, in the direction of the fault 3, passing through the retaining surfaces of the element heat conductor 3c. In addition, the heat conducting element 3c is subjected to thermal expansion which has the effect, for example, of also increasing the width of the slot 5, so that the heating element in the form of a plate 2e which is inserted in element 3c is slightly in contact with element 3c, which reduces heat losses.
The improvements described with regard to the thermal efficiency make it possible to reduce the size of the heating element 2c as of the heat conducting element 3c, for the same amount of heat produced.
There are also advantages which consist in the fact that with a ceramic heating element such as the plate-shaped heating element 2c, the high thermal efficiency obtained by a lower consumption of electrical energy than for a steam iron. soldering of the elassic type t makes that: firstly the heating time is short, that is to say that the time necessary for Iréle-mant to reach the temperature at which the soldering iron is heated so as to make welding possible , after power up, is only about 3 minutes, which is only half of the 6 to 7 minutes usually required; and secondly, excellent productivity, reduced price and great durability are obtained, and the resistance pattern producing heat manifests a rapid increase in resistance under the effect of the rise in temperature, it reduces the electric current and automatically decreases energy consumption and keeps the temperature almost constant.
It goes without saying that many modifications can be made to the device described and shown, without departing from the scope of the invention.
